Parasha 5: Chayei Sara “Sarah’s life” (Week 23) 26 Adar I-3 Adar II 5779/ March 3-9, 2019
Torah Reading: Genesis 25:1-18 Research & Insight of: Sister Milot Panerio
vv.1-6 - We have come to the end of Abraham’s life. vv.1-6 reveal an
interesting note about Abraham that is surprising. He married again and had
not one but six sons! It is somewhat unclear when this additional family
came to be. The wording in Hebrew is such that Abraham could have taken
the wife while Sarah was still alive. Either way, we are left scratching our
heads at Abraham’s prowess. The concubines in verse 6 are evidently
Keturah and Hagar. A concubine is what might be called a second wife – a
legal marriage, but the wife and her children are not on equal footing with
the primary wife or wives.
vv.3-4 – Descendants of Keturah.
vv. 5-6 – Avraham gave everything he owns to Yitzchak, but to the sons of
the concubine(s) he made grants and set them off to the east, land of Kedem,
away from Yitzchak, his son.
vv.7-10 – Death of Avraham. He lived 175 years. Yitzchak and Ishmael
buried him at the cave of Machpelah were his wife Sarah was also buried.
v.11 – It was after Avraham’s death, that Aveinu YaHoVaH blessed Yitzchak
and he lived by the Well of the Living One, My Seer.
vv.12-16 – The names of the sons of Ishmael, 12 chiefs according to their nations.
v.17 – Ishmael’s years of life, 137
v.18 – Ishmael’s descendants lived from Havilah to Shur, facing Egypt toward Assyria. They settled facing all his brothers.

Instructions:
Create an invisible bubble around you….. as you settle in your personal
Bubble, freely focus and involve oneself , let us begin examining ourselves in silence.
Start by taking notice of your breath. Taking air slowly through your nose and exhaling more slowly but longer
through your mouth. Let the air reach your head , neck down to your shoulders ,to your arms… to your body and to
your feet. Do this repeatedly for at least two minutes with consciousness that the air is reaching every inch of your body.
Now look at your pair of footwear….. that old familiar footwear. You may not even have bothered to check it this
morning before putting it on like what would you be doing now. Looking at this footwear , think about how you first got
it and how it has served you.
As you look at it, reflect on your recent life’s journey. What kind of roads have you been travelling recently?
• Are they paved ,smooth road? Rocky road ?soft and murky?
• Have you felt worn out in your recent journey in your life?
• Or were you energized by this part of your journey?
• What where your strides like? Big and exciting? Small and fearfull? heavy and discouraging? Light peaceful?
