Gabi, A Girl in Pieces

Gabi, a Girl in Pieces, sheds light on overcoming low-self esteem. Gabi (short for Gabriel)
started her life pretty rough. Since she came out the womb, she has always been reminded that
her presence should not be aware. She constantly throws herself under the bus… and so does
her own mother. Throughout this story, we watch Gabi face obstacles, connect with others,
grow mentally, and most important, gain self confidence. Gabriel is a senior in high school,
infatuated with opinions and coping with stress. She has all these stressors; her grandmother
doesn’t want to be in contact with her because her mother gave birth while she was unmarried,
her mother describes her as fat, she is currently struggling to manage school and college
applications, worries about Mexican women and their college history, her mother thinks her
friends are bad influences (Cindy is pregnant and Sebastian is gay), her dad is a drug addict
and her mom is pregnant… etc. Moral of the story is, Gabi has been through a lot in her life and
has a lot of weight on her shoulders at such a young age.

I admire Gabi in so many different ways and I absolutely love the way she has made it to the
light of this long, dark tunnel. Gabi has given me these vibes that prove that any child can push
and push to make it to adulthood, no matter what the case may be; black, white, short, tall,
skinny, fat, no matter what! Gabi’s main “get away” would be her diary and poetry. Gabi has had
this diary since her senior year started and jots down all her thoughts/life’s secrets in there. In
my life, it’s hard to talk about situations to others and the only thing that would help me get
things “off my chest” would be a paper and pen. To me, this is a stress reliever and I know that
this was a way for Gabi to have a breather. She is also a poet and through her poetry she
expresses her truth about her life.

This book will give you different ways to approach life situations and give you hints as to how
to find a connection between you and your environment; if you KNOW things aren’t right/for you,
then let it go and look for another way out.
