"TS” / “8TS" TECHNICAL PROGRAMMING HANDBOOK Rev. 0, released 10/12/2004

Chapter 1 : Introduction
• The chargers of the ”TS” and “8TS” series have been developed to recharge lead-acid traction
batteries, which are usually used on electric traction handling vehicles.
• The power supply is three-phase 230÷400V AC. These chargers recharge batteries with different
capacities and voltages ranging from 12V to 96V (rated values) with Wa or WoWa-characteristic.
• The AP-739P and AP-739QL / AP-739QLWW cards are designed to control the chargers of the
above-mentioned series. After adjustment, these multi-voltage cards are suitable for all battery
chargers from 12V to 96V. To solve possible failures, service technicians only need both cards.

Below you will find a list of the cards with their functions:

1. AP-739P: Display and control card, provided with a multifunctional LCD and 5 LED’s for
immediate readout of the current charging status.
DIP switches and jumpers on the card are used to correctly configure the function of the battery
charger according to the battery’s technical specifications and working conditions.
One single version for all TS and 8TS models.

2. AP-739QL: Supply card, provided with an ON-OFF relay, signal input and 24V AC power supply; by
means of jumpers it can be adjusted to fit 12-24-36-48-72-80-96V batteries.
One single version for all TS models with Wa-characteristic.

3. AP-739QLWW: Supply card, provided with two ON-OFF relays, signal input and 24V AC power
supply; by means of jumpers it can be adjusted to fit 12-24-36-48-72-80-96V batteries.
One single version for all 8TS models with WoWa-characteristic.
IMPORTANT NOTES FOR THE SERVICE TECHNICIANS
The continuous evolution of the electronics has resulted in great modifications and changes to the
electronic cards, therefore take the following into consideration:

• Till June 2003 (approx.) cards had a double power supply (from mains and from battery). If
the charger was connected only to battery, the card switched on and displayed some
information.
• From June 2003 cards have only the mains power supply (24V AC delivered by the auxiliary
transformer). Therefore no message is displayed on battery connection, since the card is
still not active; the card is activated only when performing also mains connection (functions
are described in Chapter 3).
• The new card (L version) is interchangeable with the old one, but its functions and
indications are partially different.
• Remember that a power failure (even a temporary one) resets the charge which is resumed
automatically on power-fail restart.
• In addition, the new card is provided with a new software release (AP739P V3.4) which
changed basically the equalizing charge, making it much more effective.

Chapter 3: Installation and startup

• Connect the power cable to a power supply of standards corresponding to the power of the battery
charger installed (see technical details).
• Connect battery to charger by means of the cables provided, and make sure that polarity is
observed.
• The electronic card has not signalled anything so far.
• When the battery charger is switched on, all display’s segments and the five LED’s light up for a
short time (two seconds). This makes it possible to check that the unit is being powered and that
peripherals function correctly.
• If the charger is powered only from battery, the card will not signal anything; if the charger is
powered only from mains, the LCD will light up and 0A (0 current) will appear.
• The battery is connected correctly when the green LDS5 LED is constant (which indicates battery
connection).

• The charging process will start automatically (Autostart) 5 seconds after connection to mains and
battery. The delay switch-on of the Autostart function can be set by configuring the SW1 2/3 DIP
switches. It is also possible to start the charging process by hand by pressing the external P1
button.
• The LDS2, LDS3 and LDS5 LED’s will blink while performing Autostart.
• The charging process can be interrupted by pressing the P1 button again.
• On mains disconnection the card will switch off and the started charging process will be reset and
automatically resumed on power-fail restart.
• On battery disconnection, instead, the charging process is terminated (charging data are reset)
and the battery charger gets ready for a new charge.
• The SW1.8 DIP switch is used to activate/deactivate the equalizing charge.
• When the equalizing charge is activated, the yellow LDS1 LED will be constant.
• The equalizing charge will be performed only if the charger has correctly completed the normal
charge (green LDS3 LED constant). Press the external P1 button to stop the equalizing charge,
thus anticipating the pause.
• By pressing the P1 button again, the equalizing charge is resumed from the point it was stopped.

Chapter 4: Setting the threshold voltage

• To set the battery’s rated voltage, you just need to set the JA1÷JA7 jumpers (on the AP-
739QL) to the required position (see Fig. 2a in Chapter 2) and turn the T1 trimmer (on the AP-
739P card) half turn (see Fig. 1a in Chapter 2).
• The value set with the above mentioned procedure is 2.4 V/cell (± 3,00V of battery rated
voltage).
If this setting needs changing, proceed as follows:
Material required: - DC power supply (variable from 0V to 150V) (like SLV-150)
- Thin screwdriver for adjustments

• Deactivate the AUTOSTART function (SW1-3) on the AP-739P card.

• Set the power supply to the desired voltage threshold and power the charger by means of the
charging cables.
• Connect the charger to the mains power supply without pressing the ON button (P1).
For a lead battery with a rated voltage of 48V (24 cells x 2.00V/cell) the voltage threshold
corresponds to 2.4 V/cell. Therefore, the input voltage must be 2.40 x 24 = 57.6V.
• Use a thin screwdriver to turn the T1 trimmer on the AP-739P card until the LDS4 LED (yellow)
lights up.
• If the LED is already lit, turn the T1 trimmer until the LED light goes off, then turn it again until it
lights up again.

• Decrease the set voltage by means of the SLV-150 power supply unit (the yellow LED light will go
off) then increase it again (the yellow LED will light up) to check if the setting has been performed
correctly.

N.B.: The adjustment mentioned above has to be performed within the activation time (10 sec.)
of the voltage threshold. If you are not sure whether the adjustment made is correct, reset
mains and set the voltage again.

INITIAL CHARGE FINAL CHARGE PAUSE EQUALIZING time

The charging characteristic shown above is made up by the following stages :
• Initial charge with decreasing current until the gassing point is reached. The final charge is
activated on reaching the threshold set by means of the JA1÷JA7 jumpers and adjusted with the T1
trimmer.
• Time-controlled final charge (adjustable time; default setting: 3h).
• Pause that separates the end of the normal charge and the beginning of the equalizing charge.
EQUALIZING CHARGE
• The equalizing charge is activated automatically (corresponding yellow LED always lit), but it
can also be deactivated (SW1-8).
• The equalizing charge will be performed automatically after the normal charge: after T. Pause
(min), charging pulses (T. ON) will alternate with T. OFF (see table below).
• These pulses alternate during the Active Cycle after which the charger performs a Stop Cycle.
• This equalizing system has no time limits and is stopped only on battery disconnection.
This system is useful also during holidays and week-ends, since it makes it possible to
keep battery charged while preventing overcharging, overheating, and/or water
consumption.

Chapter 7 : Setting the battery's rated voltage

• The JA1÷JA7 jumpers located on the AP-739QL / AP-739QLWW card are used to select the
battery’s rated voltage.
• The scale for measuring the voltage, displayed as a battery cell symbol, is obtained from the ratio
of the battery voltage’s measurements made by two analogue inputs with different ranges: one has
an absolute range from 0V to 255V and the other one from 0V/cell to 3.1875 V/cell.
The following table shows the types of batteries that can be selected with the jumpers and the
corresponding full scale values.

Chapter 8 : Setting the shunt's rated current

The welded B and C jumpers (AP-739P) can be used to select the type of shunt installed on the
battery charger for a correct read operation of the charging current.
This check and/or adjustment is needed when an AP-739P card has to be replaced with a spare card.
The following table shows the selection and combining:
Table 8.1

-- = jumper cut out

X = jumper connected

N.B. : Jumpers are normally welded in the B+C configuration (100A / 100mV).
If necessary you have to cut out either the B or C jumper, or both, to get the desired value
according to the power of the charger where the card has to be installed.

Chapter 9 : Activating the proportional charge

The A jumper on the AP-739P card is used to activate the proportional charge.
If the battery’s voltage reaches the gassing point within the first hour of charging, a final charge will
be performed that lasts half the time of the initial charge (in minutes) + 3 minutes.
