A LOOK FORWARD – MY 5 YEAR PLAN 2

Abstract

This paper outlines my plan for professional development over the course of the next five years.

The purpose is to reflect on I want to be in my teaching career within and by those five years. By

creating a layout of the plan, there is more accountability to follow through with these goals. It

is important to have an idea of where one is going in their career and where they see themselves

in five years as an educator. Mostly, I want to focus my efforts on becoming very good at what I

am doing for the rest of my life.

A LOOK FORWARD – MY 5 YEAR PLAN 4

Rational for my 5 Year Plan

Teaching is still very new for me yet something I am passionate about. I have many plans

for the next 5 years in my career and I am a very determined and diligent person, so I know I will

get there. In the short term, I plan to pass TPA 4 and this capstone course to be able to apply for

my CA preliminary teaching credential and Masters Degree. Although I 'walked' already this

May, I want to be able to physically hold that Master's degree and I need the credential for

potential employers to take me seriously. I have been in pursuit for teaching positions this month

already and have been interviewing regardless. I’d love to land a teaching position for the 2019-

2020 school year, so my 5 year plan can begin. I would also like to ideally be hired at a low

income school so I can take part in the loan forgiveness program upon completion of

employment there for five years. I’d like to get started in the new teacher induction or BTSA

program right away because it is crucial to clear the credential within five years of completing

the credential program. I will start seeking advice, participating in the teacher induction program

for the next two years to clear my credential, getting involved with my school and taking

advantage of any and all professional development meetings, seminars, trainings and even

conferences if the opportunity presents itself. It is important to me to

Because I am new to teaching, I am unsure of what specific conferences and trainings I

want to attend. During student teaching, my master teachers attended ELPAC trainings, district

grading, MYP and IB curriculum meetings, and more. I noticed some schools offer programs

related to their curriculum such as professional development in StudySync and Core Knowledge

curriculum, as well as the full AVID teacher training. I am open and willing to participate in any

professional development opportunities and trainings I need to in order to stay up-to-date and be

the best teacher I can be for my students, for myself and for my school site. For some reason, I

am unable to get hired this summer due to my lack of experience, I do have a backup plan, which

is to substitute teach in multiple districts in the Sacramento area or be a long-term substitute if

there is a position available. This way, I can network and see which schools and districts I like

and seem to be a good fit. I will also continue working for my other side customer service job as

it pays the bills.

Finally, I can’t wait to solidify my classroom management practices, my best practices

and favorite techniques for teaching and to get involved with the school. Whether it be to

chaperone at school dances, club events or sports games, I am ready and game to be a team

player. I have also always had the dream of earning my certificate of fluency in American Sign

Language at the local junior college and learn Spanish through a language app like Dual Lingo.

With knowledge of these languages, I will have the skills to be an interpreter and/or fill any gaps

in communicating with my students, especially in CA where we have a high population of

English Language Learners.
