SOLIDWORKS INSPECTION – STANDALONE APPLICATION
SOLIDWORKS Inspection allows you to create inspection documents regardless of your CAD system. If you are a
SOLIDWORKS user and you are working on a SOLIDWORKS drawing file, please use the SOLIDWORKS Inspection add-
in. However, if you only have access to a PDF or TIFF file, please use the SOLIDWORKS Inspection standalone
application to create your ballooned drawing and inspection sheet.

CREATE A NEW PROJECT

1. Start SOLIDWORKS Inspection – Standalone Application by double-clicking the desktop icon.

2. Copy the Tutorial folder from the <installation folder>/SOLIDWORKS Inspection/PDF/ folder and paste it on
your desktop. You will be using the files it contains for the Quick Start Tour.

3. Click and drag around the title of the drawing in the title block to select it. SOLIDWORKS Inspection uses the
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) engine to extract the information and add the title value directly in the
Part Name field.

When using the OCR engine, only select the information you are trying to extract for the best results. Also, the
resolution of the PDF or TIFF file resolution must be at least 300 DPI. Low-quality scanned documents or PDF
files can be difficult to interpret by the OCR engine.

For advanced data formatting, you can create and integrate pivot tables and even use macros. When using
macros, you need to save templates as an *.xltm file and add them to the template list in SOLIDWORKS
Inspection.

You can also manually modify the tokens used by the Template Editor. For example, this token populates the
upper limit of the characteristic:

iex:INSPECTIONXPERT/INSPECTION_SHEET/ATTRIBUTES/ATTRIBUTE/@UpperLimit

However, you can modify this token to filter exported characteristics based on criteria. In this example, the
token will only populate the upper limit values for characteristics with an Operation value of Bending (as
defined in the Bill of Characteristics).

iex:INSPECTIONXPERT/INSPECTION_SHEET/ATTRIBUTES/ATTRIBUTE[@Process =
'Bending']/@UpperLimit

MEASUREMENT RESULTS

as you want as long as the CMM machines are programmed the same way.

The parameters of the CMM machine are in red. The measured inspection values are in green. There are three
columns because you imported three files.

Because the Item # (item numbers) don’t match the project numbers, you can’t use them to map the results.

14. Click .

15. Uncheck Item # and select all the remaining checkboxes. Make sure the Exact option button is selected.

SOLIDWORKS Inspection automatically maps results using the information from the CMM results.

17. In the Bill of Characteristics, select row 4.

SOLIDWORKS Inspection automatically highlights the corresponding CMM results.

The Char # value matches the Char # in the Bill of Characteristics.

18. Unfortunately, SOLIDWORKS Inspection does not assign all the results automatically. This could happen if the
CMM machine was not programmed correctly and some values used to match the results are not correct. This is
the case with characteristic number 10.

© 2014 Dassault Systèmes. All rights reserved. Confidential and proprietary – do not distribute.
36
19. In the Bill of Characteristics, select row 10.

20. In the CMM Data Import window, scroll to the top and select Item 9.

Even though the nominal values are matching (-3.206), the +/- tolerances were not entered properly in the
CMM machine and are now inverted. This explains why they weren’t assigned automatically.

21. To manually assign this result, click the down arrow in the drop-down list, and select characteristic 10.

The results for characteristic 10 are now properly assigned. If you add more results later on, SOLIDWORKS
Inspection will remember this mapping.
