Learning Objectives :
2. Understand and use the concept of combination.

Learning Outcomes :
2.1 Revise and determine the number of combinations of r objects chosen from n
different objects ( n C r ).

Activities :
a) Students are asked whether they still remember their previous knowledge on
permutation by solving the question given.
b) After the discussion of the question, teacher will explain the meaning of
combinations by using two examples.
c) Teacher asks the students to pair up. Students are required to label 4 books with
A, B, C and D. Students are required to select 3 books from these 4 books.
d) Teacher asks the students to list all possible permutations.
e) Students group all the permutations which have the same combination.
f) Teacher asks a student to write the list on the white board.
g) Teacher will explain about the concept of combination. The formula for
combination is given ( n C r ).
h) A question is written on the board as an example. Student will be guided to
answer the questions.
i) After 2 minutes, teacher asks the student to write their answer on the whiteboard.
j) Teacher gives 3 questions to the students and shown on the screen (Appendix 1)
k) Teacher will discuss the answer with the students.
l) Teacher asks the students, what they have learned.
m) A question on the screen and the student must submit tomorrow morning
(Appendix 2).

Activities :

a) Teacher tests students understanding on previous lesson.


b) Teacher uses same question in set induction but with certain conditions.
c) Students are asked to find the number of combinations by listing down.
d) Teacher explains how to find the answer to this type of questions without listing
down.
e) More examples are given on combination that involves multiplication rule (see
Handout 1).
f) Teacher gives examples on combination that has many possibilities.
g) Students are asked to form a group of four and discuss the answer to the
remaining questions in the handout.
h) Teacher gives an overall review of how to find the number of combinations of r
objects chosen from n different objects for given conditions.
i) Students are asked to do exercises (practice 6.2) from text book as homework.

Learning Objectives :
2. Understand and use the concept of normal distribution.

Learning Outcomes :
2.1 Revise and describe continuous random variables using set notations.
2.2 Revise and find probability of z-values for standard normal distribution.
2.3 Revise and convert random variable of normal distributions, X to standardized variable, Z.

Activities :
a) Teacher asks 10 students to write their heights on whiteboard.
b) Teacher explains / refresh about the set notation to students.
c) Each group takes a handout from teacher to do Activity A. On this paper, students are
asked to find their friend’s height and weight. From that information, they have to use set
notation to describe the result.
d) By using the Geometer’s Sketchpad or other software, teacher shows the graph of
normal distribution. Discusses the characteristic of normal distribution’s graph.
e) Teacher explains about the standard normal distribution.
f) Some examples are given to describe how to find the probability of z-values and at the
same time sketch the graph of standard normal distribution.
g) Then, students need to do the questions in Handout 1.
h) Teacher emphasized that the symbol of ‘<’, ‘>’ are similar with the ‘≥’, ‘≤’ respectively.
i) Teacher shows the formula to convert X, the random variable of a normal distribution, to
Z, the standardised variable. Handout 2 is distributed to the students.
j) Students are asked to answer Question 2 and Question 3 (handout 2) individually.
k) Observes and Guides the students who did not get the answer.
l) As a conclusion, teacher asks the students to state the formula to convert a random
variable X to the standard variable Z and asks why this topic is very important.

d) Teacher gives the relationship between the random variable X and the
standardized normal variable Z.
e) An example is given and teacher guides the student solve it by showing them
several steps:
[Identify and Define the normal variable, State the distribution of X, Find the
standardized normal variable Z, Write the full statement, Sketch the normal
probability graph and shade the appropriate area, Read the probability from the
standardized normal table]
f) Teacher asks students to solve the questions from their textbook in 10 minutes.
g) Teacher discusses the answer with the students.
h) Students are asked to recap their lesson for today.
i) Teacher gives sufficient number of problems as homework in their textbook.

g) Students are asked to construct and shade the region that satisfies all the
inequalities, then student take an arbitrary value of k and draw the objective
function.
h) Teacher explains how to find the minimum and maximum value by showing the
workings on the screen.
i) Students are given a question on the screen as an assignment and they must
hand in to the teacher tomorrow morning. (Appendix 1)
