Module 7 Digital Citizenship Infographic Assignment

Role: You’re a teacher at a school that has decided to institute a BYOD policy, allowing students to use their
devices in class. In support of this new policy, you’re also going to have students use the Internet and their
devices for homework, projects, and assessments. As such, you feel it is necessary to inform parents and
students about what being a digital citizen means for the grade-level. You plan to use a handout, called an
infographic, to discuss digital citizenship with your students, and you plan to send the infographic along with a
letter home for parents, too.

Audience: The infographic is for your students and their parents. This is quite a diverse group. You should
make sure your language, images, and videos are appropriate and ones that your diverse students can
culturally relate to. You should also consider how lanugage is used and what types of languages other than
English may be spoken at home. Resources that can be translated, such as a YouTube video, may be best.

Format: You will create two items: 1) a digital poster, known as an infographic and 2) a letter for parents and
students in your future class.

Task:

Step 1. Go to https://www.commonsense.org/education/scope-and-sequence and review what digital

citizenship topics are generally discussed/taught in your intended grade level.

Step 2. Choose one of these digital citizenship topics that you would like discuss with students and parents.
For example, you may focus on cyberbullying or sexting.

Step 3. Choose a free infographic tool to create an online poster, called an infographic, to give to students and
send home to parents. You might choose Easel.ly, Canva.com, or Piktochart. Here are two examples of an
infographic Example 1 Example 2

Step 4. For your infographic’s content, please locate

● Free to use images that add to the topic and are culturally relevant.
● At least 2 multimedia resources (videos, podcasts, images, animation) that are appropriate for the age
of your students and their parents
● At least 2 resources from the web that are appropriate for the age of your students and their parents
● Citations for all 4 resources

Step 5. For your infographic’s writing, please be sure to explain:

● what your digital citizenship topic is
● relevant topic issues for students and parents based upon cited research
Step 6. Add a meCode so that students and parents can contact you for more information:

● Go to http://www.qrstuff.com/
● On the left choose "Contact Details" then "meCode".
● Complete the details. You do not need to put your real details in.
● Click on "Download QR Code."
● Choose "No Thanks" as you do not want to have to pay for your QR Code.
● Save your meCode and put it on your infographic.

Step 7. Choose one of your resources to add as a QR code:

● Repeat the same process used with the meCode, but this time create a QR Code. Use any of
the other types of QR Codes; just make sure it provides people with further information about
digital citizenship. For example, it may be a link to a website, or plays a video from You Tube.
● Add this QR Code to your infographic with brief text to explain what the person will find if they
scan the code (e.g. scan for further information, scan QR code for contact details).
Step 8. Check the rubric for exactly what your instructor will be looking for on your infographic.

Step 9. Using the template given in class, compose a short, one paragraph letter to send home to parents. Be
sure to explain why the infographic and its topic is important, how it is related to your class, and what your
expectations are.

Step 10. After you have written the letter in English, please translate it to another language of your choice. You
can use Google Translate (https://translate.google.com) or Collins Dictionary
(https://www.collinsdictionary.com/us/translator).

Step 11. Submit your infographic, English letter, and other language letter to your instructor by clicking on the
title of this assignment. You can submit as a downloaded image or send the public weblink to the infographic.
