Growth and Linkages of a Harilal
Traditional Knowledge Sector Madhavan
This book explores the growth and prospects
of Ayurvedic manufacturing in Kerala and
outlines the structure, raw material source
and linkages of its organised segment. Using
the primary firm level information, this work
unpacks the linkages between the industry
and the medicinal plants and health tourism
sectors in the state, which could be worked
out through a cluster promotion strategy
within the state development paradigm. Two
manufacturing firms are explored in detail to
understand whether the sector would be
sustainable or not, and the result seems to be
positive. This book provides the ground from
which to examine the commercialisation and
transnationalisation of Ayurvedic medicine. It
fills an important gap in the literature on
healthcare in Kerala and offers an insightful
economic argument to current
anthropological debates.
