• This paper contains 02 major parts (Part A & B). Part A contains 20 multiple choice questions and Part B contains 2

for long term use. Assume the load sharing modification factor is 1.

Answer all the questions.

(01)
Answer the following questions by confirming the requirements of Steel Building Design: Concise
Eurocodes (In accordance with Eurocodes and UK National Annexes).
(Young’s modulus of steel is 210GPa.)

(a) S355, hot finished square hollow section 100x100,5mm is used for a 3m length steel truss member.
Find the design buckling resistance of the member. (5 marks)

(b) Figure 3 shows S275 restrained steel end beam loaded by 20kN/m with 5m span.

Check the conditions to use I section 356x171x51. (15 marks)

(c)

Check the conditions to use I section 203x203x60, S275 for the pin ended steel column AB which is
connected to the beams. (20 marks)

A typical floor plan of a reinforced concrete building is shown below.

The followings should be considered during the design.

Loading from reinforced concrete = 25kN/m3


Floor finish = 1.8kN/m2
Block work partitions = 2.2kN/m2
Ceiling and service loads = 0.5kN/m2
Imposed load on slab = 1.5kN/m2
Demountable light weight partitions= 1kN/m2
Slab thickness = 150mm
Concrete strength = C35/45

By confirming the requirements of Concise Eurocode 2 (For the design of in-situ concrete framed buildings
to BS EN 1992-1-1:2004 and its UK National Annex: 2005),

(a) Find the minimum number of reinforcement bars (diameter=12mm) and maximum spacing between
two bars for 1m strip along the main span of slab panel BCGF.
(Assume the cover is 35mm, area for block work partitions is 1m2, area for demountable light weight
partitions is 1m2and redistribution is 20%)

(b) Check the deflection level of the slab panel BCGF.
