Brasília: lhe Design of aUtopia
Brasília must be conceived not as asimple living organism capable of effortless/y fulfilling the vital functions of any modem
city, but also as urbs and as civitas with the inherent attributes of a capital city.
lúcio Costa, on Brasília's Pilot Plan, March 1957
I hope Brasília can be a city of happy men, who willlive life to the full in ali its fragility; men who can comprehend the
true value behind the simple things of life - a gesture, a word of affection and solidarity.
Oscar Niemeyer, Brasília's architect, June 1960
When André Malraux visited Brasília at the time of its foundation in 1960, he defined it as the first
capital city of a new civilization, the boldest city the Western world had ever built. In fact, as the
foremost expression of the modern notion of progress, Brasília was boldly "planted" in Brazil's central
plains as an achievable utopia, the undeniable proof of the country's capacity to shape its future.
Brasília is also a result of the ingenuity of the architects who conceived it 50 as to be democratically
and aesthetically appropriated by mano Essentially, the city beca me an icon of outstanding signification
that is both understandable and easy to assimilate. One of its most familiar symbols, the distinctive
shape of the Alvorada Palace pillars, was reproduced throughout Brazil in the structure of the most
modest homes as a manifestation of modernity and proof of a national identity which was then being
built. At that moment in time, Brasília strived to express the values and ideas of the very society which
had made it viable.
An ebullient stage for the political, social and economic transformations that Brazil has undergone in
the past four decades, what kind of city is Brasília today? What values has it embodied, and which
have been attributed to it? As an inexhaustible reference to many cities over time, what is its current
symbolic content? What image has been built around the utopia which originated and shaped the
city that dared to emerge under the sign of modernity and hope - the hope of becoming a city of
happy men, as Niemeyer wished?
The 25th Bienal de São Paulo, in light of its theme, "lconografias Metropolitanas", is pertinent in this
contexto Believing that some of the answers to these questions may lie in the results of the artist's
appropriation of reality from a criticai standpoint, the Fundação Bienal de São Paulo together with the
Banco do Brasil Cultural Center invite Brazilian and international artists alike to contribute aesthetically
to building and launching new symbols that will be as relevant as those of the utopia Brasília was
designed on.

Enquanto uma cidade permanece utopia, ela pode assumi r place, the sole remaining one for a Utopia, is in Hollywood,
qualquer forma e qualquer perfil. Presta-se dessarte a ser o where there can never again be a real city, only the projection
fundo de projeção das imaginações mais distintas possíveis. of different fantasies, a nowhere, and so the perfect Utopia.
europeus, segue a mesma tendência direcional, acompanhando
