Rhetorical Analysis #2

In the article published by Cesar Charvez, he expressed his feelings toward non-violence

and violence, for moving against oppression. Chavez argues that non-violence is the most

effective way to promote social change, justice, and triumph in the economy. Chavez employs

counterargument, pathos, and connotative diction in his argument to establish authority in order

to promote the positive benefits of peacefully fighting for change.

Chavez begins his argument with highlighting the outcomes that are not wanted due to

using violence. He inserted the only results that could occur implementing violence. Such as

“total demoralization” of workers and the “escalation” of deaths or injuries(lines 17-22). By

using this strategy, he hopes those who are advocating for violence see that it pushes back

progress that has been made. This sets the mood for the audience, it allows them to empathize

with those who have been affected. Chavez, in his statement also creates communion for those

supporting non-violence. Inevitably, with this strategy many can see the vital potentials of being

peaceful using nonviolence.

In addition, Chavez employs pathos to present how winning through violence is not

positive nor important. “To...ask them to give up their lives…” The use of pathos shows the

reader the impact violence can have on people that may be struggling. Cesar then sympathizes
with the audience,”Who gets killed… The poor workers.” He does this because it speaks highly

on the impact that violence will have on people. The audience, after being grasped by this

strategy may have different feelings on the choice of violence due to the safety that is wanted for

the people.

Nevertheless, Chavez uses connotative diction to insert authority within the audience.

Throughout the article Chavez reinforces his point that non-violence has a better impact than

violence. His positive language and tone offers a soothing feel for the audience. His language is

still formal enough to let the audience know he is serious. “Our conviction is that human enough

life is a very special possession given by god”. In this statement made by Chavez, shows

positivity, he then uses a negative point to emphasize the positive points more. “The burdens

of..” With this being employed the audience now appreciates the positive outcomes that could
be.

Chavez after inserting his strategies, in all developed a logical argument of why nonviolence is

more successful rather than violence.
