1. State the brief history of volleyball.

It was discovered by William J. Morgan in 1985 at YMCA, Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. The game was
inspired by tennis. William realized that instead of using rackets, why not use arms and hands to hit
the ball. Thus, the volleyball people are playing today is invented, and was named “Mintonette”. In
1932, the game became popular throughout the US and was considered as the favorite recreational
activity. Also during that year, YMCA Professor Dr. Alfred S. Halsted suggested to change the name to
volleyball because of the fact that the game’s mechanics is to volley the ball before it hits the ground.
In 1924, the rules for women division was established. While in 1910, it was introduced to the
Philippines by YMCA Philippine director Elwood Brown. It was also added to the school curriculum
during that year.

2. What is volleyball?

It is a game played in a basketball court, divided into 2 equal sides by a net. It requires 6 players for
each team to play this game. Mainly, Left and right wing spiker, Attacker, Setter, Middle blocker, and
Libero.

3. Describe the different kinds of passes in volleyball.

There are four different passes used in volleyball.

* Toss is commonly used to pass the ball to another player, or sometimes to setup for a spike. It is
done by using the fleshy parts of the fingers and gaining power from the wrist.

* Forearm pass, also called as bump or dig, is used to receive the serve, or recover the ball after an
attack. It is done by putting your arms forward, position it diagonally, and form a flat surface to
receive the ball. As for the hand, it needs to be linked. Meaning you put your left hand on top of your
right hand (Or vise versa.) then fold your fingers.

* Overhand pass is commonly used to pass or set the ball. It is done by bending a bit, position your
hands as if you are holding a ball, then push the ball toward the direction you want it to go.

* One arm pass, also called emergency pass is used on emergency situations like if you suddenly pass
the ball and you can’t position yourself correctly. It is done by putting your arms forward, form a flat
surface, then receive the ball. I noticed that when players do this, they hit the ball with their wrist. I
guess, you can do that to guide the ball going to your desired position.

4. What are the ways of tossing the ball in volleyball?

There are 2 ways to toss the ball. Mainly, high reception and low reception. You can use the overhand
pass for the high reception, and for the low reception, you can use forearm pass.
5. What are the important things to remember in doing a spike?

* Your team mates must set the ball first before doing the attack.

* Jump toward the ball.

* Hit the ball with a rotating and forward movement. To do this, you need to snap your wrist the
moment you hit the ball.

*Place your non dominant arm forward after jumping to gain balance. Then use your dominant hand

to hit the ball.

6. Ways in executing the two-hand pass?

* Put your feet to a wide, yet comfortable stance.

* Bend forward deeply to put the weight on your toes.

* Put your arms forward and position it diagonally.

* Place your hand on top of the other hand’s palm, then wrap the other hand with the first hand, and
keep the thumbs up.

* Control the ball by hitting the ball using the fleshy part between the elbows and wrist.

7. Describe how to execute the different kinds of service.

* Underhand serve

1. Position yourself in the end line.

2. If you are right handed, position your left foot forward. If you are left handed, position your right
foot forward.

3. If you are right handed, hold the ball with your left hand. If you are left handed, hold the ball with
your right hand.

4. If you are right handed, shift your body weight from the right foot, to the left foot. If you are left
handed, shift your body weight from the right foot to the left foot.
5. Lastly, if you are right handed, hit the ball with the fleshy part of your right hand. In between the
elbow and the wrist. If you are left handed, hit the ball with the fleshy part of your left hand. In
between the elbow and the wrist.

* Overhand serve

5. Lastly, if you are right handed, hit the ball with the palm of your right hand. Hit the ball in the
middle. If you are left handed, hit the ball with the palm of your left hand.

Note: To do a top spin serve, hit the ball on top then curl your hands.

* Sidearm serve

1. Position yourself in the end line.

2. If you are right handed, position your left foot forward. If you are left handed, position your right
foot forward.

3. If you are right handed, hold the ball with your left hand. If you are left handed, hold the ball with
your right hand. Position it at to your waist.
4. If you are right handed, shift your body weight from the right foot, to the left foot. If you are left
handed, shift your body weight from the right foot to the left foot.

5. Throw the ball upward, then immediately hit the ball with your dominant hand.

8. Ways in doing the blocking skills

* Position yourself close to the net

* Jump toward the net

* Position your hand above, and over the net.

* If possible, block the ball.

9. What is a LIBERO?

A libero is like the Jack of all traits of the team. Because whatever the team needs, the libero should
be able to fill it. The only difference is, a libero can only smash, black or set in the back court.

10. Enumerate some rules in playing volleyball

* Every violation costs a point.

* Each team can call a time out twice during a set. Each timeout is 3 seconds long.

* In case of a deuce, (24-24 points) The first team to score two times will be declared the winner of the
set.

* Game is up to 25. Not unless there will be a deuce.

* 6 players per team.

* Libero wears a different color of uniform.

* 5 sets per game.

11. State the brief history of basketball

Basketball is a game discovered by Dr. James Naismith in 1892. But it was developed by a P.E
Professor from YMCA, Dr.Luther Gullick. He developed the game because he was eager to come up
with a new team game similar to the ball games that are usually played during his time. The first
design of basketball was 2 peach baskets with a hoop, and a volleyball. After they demonstrated the
game, it became an instant hit during their time and was played throughout their country. In 1936, it
was added to the olympic games.

12. What are the different kinds of passing used in basketball? Describe how it is being done.

* Chest pass

1. Position the ball leveled as your chest.

2. Place the ball near your chest.

3. If you are right handed, step your left foot forward. If you are left handed, step your right foot
forward.

4. Throw the ball using both hands, gaining more strength from your elbows.

* Overhead pass

1. Position the ball above your head.

2. If you are left handed, step your right foot forward. If you are right handed, step your left foot
forward.

3. Throw the ball forward using both of your hands.

* Bounce pass

1. Position the ball leveled as your waist.

2. If you are left handed, step your right foot forward. If you are right handed, step your left foot
forward.

3. Throw the ball to the ground using both hands, gaining more strength from your elbows.

* Baseball pass

1. Position the ball above your head.

2. If you are left handed, step your right foot forward. If you are right handed, step your left foot
forward.

3. Throw the ball forward using one hand as if you are throwing a baseball pitch.

* Hook pass

1. Position the ball above your head.

2. If you are left handed, step your right foot forward. If you are right handed, step your left foot
forward.

3. Throw the ball forward using one hand, and release it in a hook manner.

13. Enumerate rules in playing basketball

* Each team has 5 members.

* Each team can substitute any player as many times as they want within the game.

* The ball can only be moved through passing, or dribbling. Once a player holds the ball with 2 hands,
It is either the player will pass, shoot or dribble the ball.

* Taking three steps while holding the ball is called a traveling foul. The enemy team will have the ball
possesion if a team is called for a traveling foul.

* Each team has 24 seconds to shoot the ball. Otherwise, the team holding the ball will be called a 24
second foul and the ball possesion will be on the opponent.

* Shooting the ball inside the three point line costs 2 points. While shooting the ball at the 3 point line
costs 3 points.

* After successful baskets or score, the enemy team will have the ball possesion.

* Certain fouls call for a free throw depending on the foul called. Each successful free throw costs 1
point. A free throw is an award to the player fouled.

* Violations in the game include Traveling (Taking 3 or more steps without dribbling the ball.) Back
court violation (Once the offensive team has the ball possesion as passes the half way line, they
cannot go back to the other half of the court unless they are in the defensive.) Goal tending
(Interfering as the ball goes down the basket.) Double dribble Dribbling the ball with two hands.)

14. What is basketball?

Basketball is a game played by 5 members each team, in a basketball court. The game’s goal is to
shoot the ball in the basket to gain a point. As for the defense, the defensive team can either steal the
ball, intercept/interrupt a pass, or block the shot so they can get the ball possesion. There should be
at least 12 players per team. 5 playing on the court, and 7 players on the bench. 1 point is granted per
successful free throw. 2 points is granted per shot inside the 3 point area. While 3 points are granted
per shot outside the 3 point area.
15. Identify and describe the facilities and equipment used in playing basketball.

* Center line – The line dividing the court into 2 parts.

* Center circle – The circle drawn in the center of the court. This is the area where jump ball is done.

* Free throw line – This is where players position to make a free throw.

* Restricted area – The area below the ring and the board. A player will be charged a 3 second foul if
the player stays there longer than 3 seconds.

* Boundary lines – The line that marks all sides of the court. Thus, defining the court’s boundaries. If
the ball bounces outside the boundary line, or a player touches the ball outside the boundary line, it
will cost the team out of bounds violation. Meaning the ball possesion will be on the enemy team. If in
any case there are no players who touched the ball outside the boundary line, the last player who
touched the ball before it went outside the boundary line will be charged of the violation.

* Ring - This is where the ball needs to go down to score a point.

* Backboard – This is where the players usually aim their long range shots. Or sometimes, lay ups.
They use the backboard as an advantage and make it easier for them to make the shot.

* Ball – This is what players use to play basketball. It is different with the ball used for volleyball,
tennis, baseball or other sports. It is bigger and heavier.

16. Give some violations in basketball.

* Back court violation – If a player goes back to the other half of the court after passing the half court
line.

* 3 second violation – if a player stays in the restricted area longer than 3 seconds.

* Out of bounds – If the ball reaches the boundary line, the player who touched the ball last, or
carried the ball last before it reached the boundary line will be charged the violation.

* 24 second violation – If a team holds the ball longer than 24 seconds without shooting, the offensive
team will be charged 24 second violation and the ball possesion will be given to the defensive team.

* Traveling violation – If a player carries the ball and takes at least 3 or more steps without dribbling
the ball, the player will be charged traveling violation and the enemy team will have the ball
possesion.

* Goal tending – If a player interrupts the ball going down the basket.
* Double dribbling – If a player stops then dribbles the ball with both hands. The player will be
charged double dribbling and the ball possesion will be given to the enemy team.

17. How can I improve my skills, if ever I plan to do this activity?

Practice, practice, practice. You can watch replays of teams playing basketball or maybe some game
highlights. But the most important thing of all is practice. Without it, you won’t be good at ANYTHING.
This applies not only on basketball, but on every part of our life. We must have the initiative to
practice those things we want to change, or adapt.

18. Illustrate the volleyball playing court with measurement and its parts

* Posts- It is placed 0.50-1.0 meters away from the sidelines. At least 2.43 meters high for Men’s
division and 2.24 meters high for women’s division. Can be made of wood, or steal. These posts are
preferrably adjustable.

* Antennae – Placed on top of the posts. At least 1.80mm long and 10mm in diameter.

* The court is a flat surfaced, rectangular shaped court, divided into two halves using the net, and the
posts. Preferrably 9 meters each. So all in all, the playing court should measure 18 meters.

* Sideline- It should measure at least 18 meters or longer depending on the playing court.

* End line- Measures at least 9 meters depending on the playing court.

* Center line – The line in the middle of the net, and the end line. At least 5cm thick.

* Serving area- This is where the players position to make the serve. 3 meters long.
