Sarah Pearson (Dorothy)

Beautiful...absolutely beautiful. Pure talent. A girl (her) age
definitely has the makings for a great star. …kept character… a very
impressive voice.

For four consecutive nights in March, the cast, chorus, crew and
band enthralled audiences with the conviction and professionalism
of their performances. Sophisticated comedy, flawlessly scripted
and executed; fantastic music with some stunning solos, supported
by a disciplined orchestra; ever-evolving sets, expertly lit, and all
underpinned by some excellent acting from the leads and
suppporting cast. The action takes place in Kansas, in
Munchkinland, on a Yellow Brick Road, in a Cornfield, in an
Orchard, in a Jungle, in the Emerald CIty, in a Wizard's Chamber,
in a Haunted Forest and in O'Lecter's Irish Witch Bar...anywhere
you like.

Students' talents were tapped into throughout the extensive

preparations under the visionary guidance of Director Alan
Crombie, and musical directorship and orchestral arrangements by
Alistair Hamilton with some students being given ownership for
certain details of the production, such as design and choreography.

Musical performances by a talented band as well as splendid vocals

from soloists and chorus added depth and strength to what proved
to be thoroughly engaging acting on stage: Sarah Pearson
(Dorothy), Michael Pearson (Scarecrow), Rafael Rodriguez (Tin
Man), Rory Keys (Lion), Zo-Ee Chee (Wicked Witch), Nicola Moss
(Good Witch) and Richard Durant (Wizard) have to be
congratulated for keeping up the pace night after night, giving
spirited and totallu absorbing performances, nor forgetting also
those that have worked tirelessly behind the scenes, the technical
and stage crew, make-up artists and costumiers.

"It was, without a doubt, the best school production I've seen
anywhere. And I can't remember the last time I laughed so much.
A fabulous swan song for Mr. Alan Crombie", says Principal,
Richard Dyer.

Ad Astra Review

13th March 2008

Dear Alan,
I write to congratulate you on the production “The Wizard of Oz”.
As you know, we attended on Tuesday evening and thoroughly
enjoyed the show! It is evident that you have put a great deal of
time and energy into such a great show, adapting the original
script to suit the cast and audience. I was interested by your
description of the screen and theatrical productions written in the
guide and I guess that whilst I have strong memories of the film, I
would fall into the category of people that were still uncertain of
the details of the plot.

It is evident with a show of this magnitude that an awful lot of

people have put in a tremendous amount of work and time. I
cannot hope to give everyone the full credit that they deserve, but
I would be grateful if you would perhaps find a chance to read this
letter to the cast and crew so that you may pass on my best
wishes. To name everyone’s contribution from just watching the
performance is not possible, but it takes every part of a jigsaw to
make the complete picture!

I am sure that Ken and Melisa were a great help in the production
and of course the Music Department and students for the great
accompaniment. Jon managed the complex audio effects very
well and will be a great loss to the school next year. Set design
was fabulous and I am sure that Steve Megson (et al) would have
spent countless hours preparing that lot!

There were some superb performers, and I would like to note some
of those that stood out for me:

· The Klassy Sisters were a nice “Crombism” reminiscent of

aspects of The Little Shop of Horrors. Katherine, Leah and Simone
in particular had a lovely balance of sophistication and intrigue.

· Mariam – her voice has come on superbly – very

impressive.

· ZoEe, Kim and Richard’s characters were all spot on!

· Big Mike P – what a star. Very funny.

· Tin Man Raph, very very funny. He has so many subtle

moves, slight inclinations of the head or touch that made a big
impact on me. Very talented indeed.

· Sarah – wow! Her voice came through a treat and her

every move was that of a super star!

· Nicky – she had me in hysterics! Looked like a million

dollars and had so many subtle moves that were simply superb!

It was simply superb to watch the students in action! Please do

pass on my sincerest best wishes and encourage them to keep up
the good work.

Your contributions to the productions at Alice Smith have been

immeasurable and have set such a high target for others to aspire
to. You will, I am certain, be sadly missed at the school. I wish I
had an ounce of your creativity, energy and passion.
Sincerely,

Nik

Sample resources: The creation of a

production such as 'Wizard of Oz' requires
considerable preparation, not only in terms
of the months of rehearsal, but also in
the extensive areas of performance
support.

I have attached samples of the materials
used during this production which will give
insight into the enormous demands of a
theatre production. As Director, I was
responsible for all aspects of the show - the rewriting of the
script, principal and chorus rehearsals, stage movement and
choreography, stage, programme and costume design, lighting,
sound and microphone plots and the acquisition or creation of all
visual and film resources.
At times, there is considerable pressure -
and frustration. The coordination of a
huge team - especially as the dress
rehearsals are drawing near - requires
absolute confidence on the part of the
Director to steer the entire show to
success. Is it worth the pressure? Judging
by the audience response and, as a result,
the pleasure, satisfaction and real sense of
achievement enjoyed by the cast, yes it is
- undoubtedly.
