1/essay: Causes and effects of global warming

Nowadays, in many countries, there are many problems
concerning the environment. Global warming on the earth
is becoming more serious. This essay will discuss the
causes and effects of global warming.

One of the main causes of global warming is carbon

dioxide emissions.

My point is about the way people pollute the environment.

All human activities in real life such as driving cars and
burning fuel all result in increasing carbon dioxide
emissions.

Carbon dioxide emissions comes from the burning of

gasoline in the internal-combustion engines of cars, and it
also comes from the burning of fossil fuels such as oil,
natural gas and coal for the purpose of electricity
generation.

In addition, many industrial companies are developing

quickly .Emissions from them are toxic and it's difficult to
neutralize toxic products.
Moreover, most of the emissions are released into rivers or
where people live. This pollutes water sources and
endangers wildlife habitat.

The second major cause is methane, which is another

contributor to the greenhouse effect.
The formation of natural methane is higher than methane
emanating from industry, and natural methane in ice-like
combinations lies on the sea floor.
Evaporating water can increase the volume of methane on
the earth. When methane escapes from the sea, it can exist
for a longer time in the air and can become carbon
dioxide.

Now, we can examine some effects of this problem

The first effect concerns climate change.
The summer is longer and hotter, whilst the winter is
shorter and colder.
This leads to habitat changes.
Ices melts because of higher temperatures.
Some islands have disappeared from being covered by
water.
For example, in Italy, cities are seen to be sinking as the
sea level rises.

In addition, people's health can be threatened.

Global warming results in the spread of diseases.
As countries become warmer, disease carrying insects
migrate, bringing plague and disease with them.

In conclusion, global warming is becoming ever-more

serious.
Countries throughout the world have agreed on a treaty
called the Kyoto Protocol to help limit it.

Last, but not least, people should change activities which

harm the environment.
2/Comparison esssays
Topic: Living at home and living away from home
Nowadays, most students study at university after
graduating from high school. Due to the distance between
their hometowns and colleges, a few students live with
their family while many others live far away from home.
These two types of living have some different influences on
students in terms of living condition, financial problems
and independence.
Firstly, students living at home can enjoy better
living condition than ones living far from home. As home
is the whole family’s place, it is normally large and well-
equipped with many electric devices. Also, students are
provided with fresh, nutritious food. On the contrary,
dormitory or rent house are usually small with poor
facilities. For example, many students living in cramped
rent house have to use one small space for cooking,
eating, learning and sleeping. Owing to busy learning,
students may skip their meal or eat fast food, which badly
influences on their health.
Secondly, living at home differs from living far away
in that it helps students avoid financial problems. Living
at home, students have the telephone bills, electricity bills
and other daily expenses paid by their parents while
students living far from home have to pay all those things
on their own with a monthly amount of money. Unlike
students who receive parents’ instruction, students who do
not live with their family often lack financial managing
skills. As a result, they often spend money on unnecessary
items and cope with running out of money.
Finally, the other obvious difference is that living far
from home provides students more independence than
living at home. It goes without saying that parents want to
take good care of children by setting a wide range of rules
for them. Consequently, students living with family have to
ask for their parents’ permission if they want to go out or
invite friends to their homes. Additionally, parents also
control their time spent on using computer and TV. In
contrast, students living without parents’ control have
more privacy because they do not have to obey the strict
rules. They can go out whenever they want and freely
gather with their friends. Thanks to independent life, they
can flexibly spend time on learning, surfing websites or
playing games without any complaint.
In general, though living at home and living far away
from home have some considerable differences, each type
has its own advantages and disadvantages to students.
Therefore, no matter what kinds of living students choose,
they can still enjoy their wonderful life at college.
3/Essay topics: Advantages and disadvantges of watching
TV on children.
Nowadays, TV is one of the most popular entertainments
in most families. And some people think that TV effects
on us, especially children. I think that TV has both good
and bad sides for children and it has good more than bad.
In this essay, I will look at both positive and negative sides
that TV effects on children’s life.
Let’s begin by looking at the advantages of watching TV.
One of the main positives is that TV offers a wide range of
entertainment for children in their free time. Children
sometimes get studying pressure in school and pressure
from their parents. They can watch fun cartoon or movies
when they feel bored or tired. Besides, TV has many kinds
of music shows like “The Voice kids”, or “Doremi”.
Secondly, watching TV can help children to widen their
knowledge. They can learn much more than what they
studied at school and they can study better. There are
many informational programs that they didn’t know about
before. For examples, they can learn how to treat other
people around them, learn about society and behaviors
when they watch Fairy Tales. When they watch “Barney
and friends”, they can not only improve their English
skills but also can learn about the world around them.
“Fingertips” can give baby girls many helpful tips to
become clever girls. And baby boys can explore more
about cars or nature through international programs.
Turning to the other side of the argument, it cannot be
denied that watching TV have some disadvantages. The
negative influence on children’s health is a major problem.
If children focus on TV so much for a long time, they will
have eye diseases such as nearsighted or farsightedness.
The second disadvantage that TV can affect children is
that their behavior. Especially when children watch some
violent films on HBO or Cinemax, they can act out like
characters. There are many unsuitable programs; if they
watch them, they will learn about and simulate like that
when they grow up.
To sum up, watching TV is a necessary way to relax in
almost families and it is useful for people. It is obviously
that TV is an important part in children’s life. However it
will become dangerous entertainment if parents don’t take
care of their children enough. In my opinion, parents
should control and manage time if they allow their
children to watch TV.
4/Essay topics: All over the world, societies are facing a
growing problem with obesity. This problem affects both
children and adults. What are the reasons for this rise in
obesity? How it could be tackled?
A few decades ago there was no much pain with
overweighting among both young and adults. However, in
today’s world the majority number of world population is
suffering from obesity which is the most prevalent disease
and increasing dramatically in most developed countries.
This essay will look at the reasons for it and propose some
solutions.
One of the main causes of obesity among young people,
especially students is that they usually eat junk food and
drink soda after every lesson because they are cheaper and
tastier than home food with vegetables. For instance, in
the USA almost 90% students prefer to have fast food in
the street rather than eating at home. A solution is for the
government to increase tax on junk food and reduce the
number of shops which sell fast food near the schools.
Another obvious reason of young obese is that lack of
physical activities. In comparison, in the past youngsters
were much more active than current because of regular
sport activities. Hence, more immature people are
accustomed to be busy with indoor activities such as
playing computer games and internet and watching TV
programs. The way forward might be to attract them to
fitness clubs in cheap price by advertising on TV and
common social websites.
A third major problem among mature population is that
they skip the meal during their working time and leads to
overeat at dinner time. As a result of overeating after hard
work they could break their stomach working system and
have excessive weight eventually. To tackle this problem,
people should interfere to one eating habit during the work
time.
To sum up, obesity is the major and widespread issue in
the whole world and ultimately it can even cause
premature death as a result of poor eating habit, overeating
and less physical activity. The way I can see it this global
health problem should be solved by both government and
individuals.
6/Essay: cause and effects of homelessness
What would it be like to be homeless? Imagine not
knowing where you will sleep tonight. On a practical
level, how would it feel not to have a bath for weeks and
to wear dirty clothes every day?
I think most of us would agree with the line from John
Payne’s poem Home, Sweet Home: “Be it ever so humble,
there is no place like home”.
Yet thousands of people in the UK have no home of their
own. We have all seen people asking for money, who seem
to have all their possessions in a plastic bag, and nowhere
to go.
Although these people who are sleeping rough in
doorways are the most visible, homelessness also includes
those who are placed in hostels, bed and breakfast or other
temporary accommodation, or local authority housing.
It is difficult to understand how people become homeless
and research shows that they are all ages, from all areas
and backgrounds. There are charities that support the
homeless and Centrepoint is a national organisation that
focuses on young people. It provides emergency night
shelters and short stay hostels. Their research shows that
more than 80% of the young people who turn to
Centrepoint for help are homeless due to family
breakdown, abuse or eviction.
Some young people become homeless following the death
of a parent. It seems a double blow to be bereaved and
homeless. However, often these vulnerable young people
find themselves sleeping rough before seeking help.
Many of these 16 to 20 year olds have no qualifications or
means of supporting themselves financially. I feel that if
our society wants these people to become self-sufficient, it
is essential to offer help in the form of housing, and
assisting them to either return to school, or to gain
qualifications through training programmes to improve
their chances of finding worthwhile employment.
Tragically, many homeless young people are “befriended”
by drug addicts or encouraged into prostitution. For those
who have run away from home as a result of abuse, one
wonders how bad their home circumstances must have
been if they would prefer to face the risks of addiction and
sexually transmitted disease.
Of course it is not only young people who become
homeless. Older people can face homelessness when they
lose their jobs and are evicted from their homes because
they cannot pay the rent. Sometimes these people have
physical or mental health problems as well. Unfortunately
in some circumstances these people either have no family,
or their families are unable or unwilling to help them.
Single homeless people are not a high priority for housing
assistance and are therefore more likely to be sleeping
rough, huddled under a bridge, trying to keep warm with
newspapers.
Other homeless people are ex-offenders. They have paid
for their crime and yet they find themselves unable to find
a job and therefore without resources. It is sad that many
people coming out of prison have nowhere to go and may
eventually end up in prison again. Often these people have
been exposed to drugs in prison and will resort to dealing
as a means of making money.
Anyone is capable of turning to crime out of desperation,
ending up harming others in an attempt to steal money. If
people become homeless as a result of family breakdown
or employment problems, should we not as a society make
a stronger effort to help these people? Homelessness and
having no money creates a climate for crime which is what
we want to prevent. One of the ways of preventing it could
be to offer more support to people before they find
themselves homeless. For example, young people could
have anonymous safe places to go to if they are in abusive
situations. They should know that there is at least one
adult at school who they can talk to, or a number they can
phone. Although there are charities offering phone line
assistance, it is not sufficient.
The people who receive the least sympathy, it seems, are
the mothers with small children. Although they may not be
sleeping rough, these families are often in very cramped
accommodation and they cannot really make it feel like a
home. If they are fortunate enough to be given council
housing they are often envied or disliked by others and
made to feel that they have been given something they do
not deserve. However, we do not know their
circumstances and they may have been the victims of
sexual abuse or domestic violence. It would be far better
for them and their children to be in a safe place than to
risk further violence.
Homelessness is a problem all over the world. Places
affected by flooding and earthquakes suddenly have
thousands of people whose homes have been demolished
and who have no possessions. Places in Africa that
experience severe drought conditions force people to try to
find food elsewhere. Unfortunately the result is often
groups of homeless people who are starving.According to
the United Nations, more than 100 million people
worldwide have no housing whatsoever. This becomes a
serious Human Rights issue and although we might like to
think it is mainly a problem in the developing countries,
the truth is that in first world countries such as the UK and
United States, the number of homeless is growing.
Although it is helpful to donate to charities who offer help,
or to give people food, more needs to be done. Adequate
housing needs to be available and we have to change our
attitude towards people who may be in dire circumstances
through no fault of their own
