Edited by Italo Rota, this volume is a project developed within NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle
Arti) in Milan. In placing the individual at the very centre of research and drawing visual form from
a profound exploration of the self, it is a massive architectural effort of inquiry into the domain of
our interiority. The notion of interior is observed from various perspectives; space is considered in
relation to a wide set of stakeholders and domains - the discourse around space and the human
body is of particular interest. Moreover, it addresses the extension of interiority to a virtual realm,
where the interior of a media space presents an entirely different set of methods of interaction
and engagement.

This issue features works from the Takenaka Corporation and the Takenaka Carpentry Tools
Museum, which exhibits the histories of notable 'daiku' (carpenters) from different generations,
together with the development of tools, techniques, and timber production management. In 2014
the museum relocated to a new building and, with the assistance of contemporary craftsmen,
utilised traditional carpentry in the realisation of its structure and spaces. Mark Mulligan writes
about craftsmanship in Japanese architecture, while Terunobu Fujimori explains its changes from
the early modern era to the present. The issue also presents perspectives from the craftsmen
themselves.

As in the eponymous exhibition at Mori Art Museum, this volume examines the characteristics of
ancient and classical Japanese architecture in a very ambitious attempt to elucidate the major
currents of the nation's architecture from the perspectives of how its genealogies have spread
internationally, the pioneering figures in the process, and the mechanisms behind the continued
expansion of these genealogies today. It documents 100 projects across nine thematic sections,
including materials, models, documents, and interactive installations. Nine stories which are
ultimately hypothetical ones, in hopes that they will lead to new discussions and visions for the
future of Japan.

Through no fault of his own, John Lautner's contributions to Modern architecture have been
widely recognized only in the last ten or fifteen years. Even so, he still remains an enigma for
some critics. We still have more to learn - and understand - about how he expanded the
boundaries of Modern architecture. After years of research, Tycho Saariste and Jan-Richard
Kikkert's book adds an invaluable resource for our understanding of Lautner. This book contains
a description of the research and the travels to all built Lautner houses. It also contains a
description of these houses and photographs the authors made during their visits. With an
introduction by American architecture expert Alan Hess.

Based in Valencia, Fran Silvestre Arquitectos reflects an architecture of rigour based on the
systematic use of sharp geometric forms and the language of whiteness. The way the houses
relate to the surrounding landscapes, the fluid organisation of their interiors, and how large glazed
surfaces open to the outside might recall the California modernism that emerged in the 1950s.
Yet they address a whole range of other concerns, from climatic transformations to the
experimentations made possible through the use of new technologies. This volume features
fourteen realised works along with newly planned projects, such as a landmark wind tower
situated in Valencia's port.

It is perhaps not common knowledge that certain relationships with Italy were crucial in
contributing to the development of postmodern architecture in Australia. In this collection of
essays and interviews edited by Silvia Micheli and John Macarthur, various authors reflect on the
reception of Italian postmodern architecture Down Under, revealing a richness of original
responses and interpretations. Dedicated to the memory of architect Romaldo Giurgola and
completed by a poem by Enrico Taglietti, the book is an addition to the ongoing discourse on
European influences on Australian culture, and represents a first critical assessment of national
postmodern architecture.

The Viipuri Library has international reputation as a seminal early work of Alvar Aalto, and is a
key example of modern architecture. Simultaneously, the meanings associated with it stem from
its geopolitical location: the library was originally opened to the Finnish city of Viipuri, but at the
end of the World War II the city was annexed by the Soviet Union. Since 1991 the building has
been located in modern day Russia. The title of the book reflects the widely spread
misunderstanding that the Library has been lost at war, and future generations can learn about it
only from drawings and images. This work unfolds its 'life' in four thematic chapters: the context of
the city of Viipuri, the Library as a work of Aalto, the time period of the Second World War and the
Soviet Union, and the international restoration project.

Elma van Boxel and Kristian Koreman, with their firm ZUS, propose a radically new way of
making a city: permanent temporality. This strategy is formed around an urban reality of values,
material and people; a philosophy based on to the past and orientated towards the future. 'City of
Permanent Temporality' is a manual for urban design that links temporary interventions to long-
term thinking.
Taking as its examples the internationally famous Luchtsingel and Schieblock projects, this book
describes the impressive process of 15 years of work in the urban laboratory that is Rotterdam.

The fourth edition of the ‘Intercalations’ series borrows its title from a 1972 science fiction novella
by Ursula K. Le Guin posing ethical questions about ecocidal violence. In response to their violent
destruction, which characterises our current epoch, these pages traverse woodlands by way of
their semiotic, socio-political, historical, and epistemic incitements in order to reveal how practices
of care, concern, and attention enable humans to inhabit this world and flourish. The exercise
creates space to consider how forests can enable experiences of elegance, affirmation, and
creation for a multitude of creatures. Includes contributions by Pedro Neves Margues, Eduardo
Kohn, and more.

The 'Intercalations' series is an experimental foray exploring the structure of the book as a
potential curatorial space. This third instalment, co-edited by Anna-Sophie Springer and Etienne
Turpin, unfolds an itinerant encounter with 19th-century European naturalists in the Malay world,
where the theory of evolution by natural selection emerged alongside less celebrated concerns
about mass extinction and climate change. By re-considering the condition of colonial science in
the tropics, we may find particular relevance for confronting forms of neo-colonisation in the
Anthropocene. With contributions by George Beccaloni, Lucy Davis, Paulo Tavares, Rachel
Thompson, and several others.

Eduardo Souto de Moura was still an architecture student in 1974 when he became more closely
acquainted with Alvaro Siza. The completion of their first project together shortly thereafter
marked the start of a lasting friendship. Souto de Moura worked with Siza until 1979, when the
opportunity arose for him to devote himself to his own projects. Both had learned the possibility of
rethinking the legacy of modernism in a critical way. But in revisiting 20th century architecture,
Siza tended towards organicist preferences, while Souto de Moura's path reflected more
rationalist tendencies. This issue examines a number of recent works by both architects, plus
three recent collaborations.

Born in Barcelona in 1955, Enric Miralles established himself as part of the rising Spanish
architecture scene of the late 1980s together with his first wife, architect Carme Pinos. From the
mid-1990s he formed a new practice with his second wife, Benedetta Tagliabue, with whom he
worked until his early death in 2000. This extensive tribute to Miralles and his all too short career
covers the trajectory of his collaborations, solo works, writings, and more, following from projects
such as the La Llauna School and La Mina Civic Centre, to an increasingly global portfolio
including the Japan National Library, Hamburg Music School, Venice School of Architecture, and
the Scottish Parliament.

This issue gathers a series of articles addressing different issues about food, architecture, and
the city. Approaching both the domestic and public space from the perspective of food, the
authors examine and clarify the relationship and countless links between these two scenarios,
offering a collection of cases that can be considered universal. The focus is on food and the
actions it triggers, impacting the configuration of public space but also highlighting the everyday
theatre around it, with the new rhythms and gestures which have appeared in the urban
environment at certain times. With contributions by Carolyn Steel, Carlos Dias Coelho, Stephen

The topic of "Late Life Urbanism" looks at how architecture and cities will be impacted in the
future by societies that become increasingly older. According to Deane Simpson, an important
group to consider is the "Young-Old" demographic, which corresponds to a shift from an ethos of
care to one of leisure and entertainment. Other contributions include a photo-essay by Peter
Granser portraying a large retirement community in Arizona, a range of urban interventions
detailed by Chris Phillipson, an architectural project by Junya Ishigami for people with dementia in
Japan, and Rafael Luna's case study in Seoul on how technology will play a crucial role in
improving elderly lives.

features various essays and photographic contributions produced by a group of local and
international academics, architects, planners, and artists. These examine everything from
Dhaka's traffic, public space, and garbage, to its dense urban reality, borders and limits, people,
and resilience. It begins by recounting a fictional meeting in which Le Corbusier, exhausted from
his Chandigarh project, and Louis Kahn, designer of the monumental Parliament of Bangladesh,

since it became the capital of the independent nation of Bangladesh in 1971. Today, a visitor's
first impression of this city could be bewildering. Dhaka is a quintessential 21st century urban
narrative of whirlwind modernity. This guidebook focuses on 25 buildings, representing different
architectural phases since the Mughal era, beginning in the early 17th century. The featured
buildings communicate larger ideas about the city's building tradition, represent an architectural
trend, influence the architectural scene, and offer a spatial story in the evolution of the city.

This book explores the history and significance of rammed earth construction in Central Europe,
particularly in Switzerland, using historical examples to investigate the potential of this building
technique for contemporary construction. Rammed earth has material advantages, such as its
strength, durability, and non-combustible nature, while potential disadvantages, such as on-site
weather dependency, can be circumvented by using prefab elements. It is ecologically
sustainable and completely recyclable as well. This pioneering and comprehensive study
contributes to safeguarding existing architectural heritage while also providing a foundation for
further research.
