• Learning Objective
• By the end of the 1.45 hour session, students
will be able to
• 1 Describe the “teaching” profession
• 2 Identify roles of a teacher
• 1. Noble Profession
• Being “noble” denotes attributes of honesty,
bravery, moral behavior, showing integrity and
serves others in a kind way (Cambridge
Advanced Dictionary – 2018)
• Teaching shows those attributes and is
thought to be the noblest of all other
professions since all professionals underwent
education with a teacher.
• It is a profession that prepares the next
generation of skilled professionals and workers
like politicians, engineers, doctors, policemen,
priests, educators, legislators, good citizens and
even bad citizens (Chahuan, 2014).
• There are many positive remarks made about the
profession by eminent people all over that makes
teaching “noble” and “unique” as it involves
molding and shaping other human beings future
“destinations”.
• The profession is as old as humanity. Confucius is
credited to be the earliest of all teachers since
561 BC, and today modern education and
teaching is as complex as any other professions.
• “It appears, therefore, that of all secular
professions, teaching is the most profoundly
important…” “of all these professions teaching is
the worse paid.”
• (Quote by Robert Menzies Prime Minister of
Australia 1939 – 1941 1945 – 1966)
• It can be debatable whether there is woman
behind every successful man, but it is
undeniable that there are some great teachers
behind every successful man and woman.
• The profession is as old as humanity. Confucius is
credited to be the earliest of all teachers since
561 BC, and today modern education and
teaching is as complex as any other professions.
• 2. The Teaching Profession in PNG.
• The Papua New Guinea Teaching Service
Commission (TSC) looks after the welfare of
Teachers in PNG while the Department of
Education (DOE) looks after policy and
Administration

Threat to cut teachers’ pay illegal, says Sori
March 19, 2019 The NationalMain Stories

By ERIC PIET
TEACHERS who fail to meet the March 31 deadline for their national
identification registration will not be struck off the payroll, an official
says.

Teaching Service Commission chairman Baran Sori said an earlier

directive warning teachers to register by the end of the month
or be struck off the payroll was illegal and not issued by the
commission.

Sori was commenting on the concerns raised by some teachers in rural

areas who were yet to complete the NID registration process and
worried that their pay would be cut.

He said the commission was the only authority with the power under
the Education Act 1983 to implement such a measure.
“No other authority apart from the TSC should issue decisions on
teachers’ suspension of pay,” he said.
“The power only belongs to the commission. Section 85 of the
Act stipulates that the limitation of powers in relation to
teachers’ appointment, promotion, transfer, discipline or
conditions of service of teachers generally or of individuals in
the teaching service is for the commission to apply.”

Sori however said since it was a Government-sanctioned

exercise, teachers should all complete their NID registrations
by the end of the year because their resumption next year
would be determined by their registration.

“If any teacher is put off the pay by the system, it is because
they didn’t fill in their Resumptions of Duty Summary Sheets.
They must not think that it is related to the national
identification registration,” he said.

• The National Newspaper 19th of March, 2019
issue.
• Teachers play many other roles in the classroom
and beyond the classroom.
• The professional expectations and community
expectation is unimaginable.
• Teachers set the tone of their classrooms, build a
warm environment, mentor and nurture
students, become role models, and listen and
look for signs of trouble.
• The most common role a teacher plays in the
classroom is to teach knowledge and skills to
students.
• Teaching is tiring, however once you master the “art” of teaching, it
is fun and enjoyable.
• The teacher’s role to some extent, is beyond the classroom. The
teacher carry on his task well into the evenings and beyond.
• Teachers are also people the community they serve look up to,
because they are often the “face” of the government in some of the
most rural part of the Country.
• Think about how many teachers get elected into the PNG
parliament after every 5 years.
• Although, the role of the TVET based teacher, may be a bit different
from a “conventional” teacher, however the practice of the art of
teaching is much the same.
• The following roles were identified to be common in Teaching all
teachers
(Dimoliatis, 2014)
• The Teacher/Instructor
• Common Roles in TVET based and others
• A vocational teachers’ primary role is to impart
knowledge and skills in their field of expertise.
• Most vocational teachers provide classroom
instruction though, many of their teaching
involves demonstrating skills to their students
• For example, they might instruct students on the
safe and proper use of tools, equipment and
software (Joyner, 2018).
• Vocational teachers also instruct students on special safety
precautions needed for a particular job, such as how to
dispose of bio hazardous waste.
• As students begin their hands-on work, teachers assess
their progress, offer suggestions and correct any unsafe or
poor techniques
• This kind of activity is common amongst TVET teachers
teaching trade based subjects and often referred to their
role as Instructors.
• The other non– trade subjects like Business studies or
tourism and Hospitality, may apply conventional teaching
skills used by humanity based subjects and other subjects
for academic excellence.
• Liaise
• Certain vocational subjects might involve an
apprenticeship, internship or other hands-on experience.
• Vocational teachers must sometimes interact with local
businesses, government agencies or Local and International
NGOs to find positions for their students to gain on-the-job
experience.
• This is a fundamental role vocational teachers will play,
depending on which type of establishment teachers are
placed.
• Teachers must also remain up-to-date on career trends,
the skills employers need and the licenses students will
need to work at their chosen occupations.
• Maintains Records
• Vocational teachers must maintain records of
students’ assignments, grades and attendance.
• When students begin on-the-job training with an
employer, the vocational teacher also keeps records of
start dates, employer evaluations and related
correspondence.
• Depending on the age of their students, vocational
teachers might need to maintain files on courses at the
next level. For example, as a pre requisites for an
advance course.
• Provider of Information
• This is the traditional role of the teacher. The
teacher lectures/teaches/Instructs the student
on a particular subject, through lessons and
activities that build on students’ prior
knowledge and moves them toward a deeper
understanding of the subject at hand.

• Role Model
• Students look upon their teachers as examples of
professional adults.
• They often have more contact with their teachers than
other people, whilst being student so it's important for
teachers to always reflect a positive image and teach
students things like respect, trust, and responsibility.
• A teacher can do this through his actions and words in
the classroom, leading by example and even out into
their private life in the communities (Teacher
Certification, 2019)
• Assessor
• A teacher cannot just teach and then move on.
Teachers must assess each student's growth and
mastery of the lesson objectives.
• This assessment can happen informally through
classroom observation or through formal
methods like quizzes and tests (Teacher
Certification, 2019).
• Expert teachers are able to recognize patterns in
the test results of their students and then plan
their lessons to meet their students' needs.
• Planner
• Teachers must be expert planners, both on paper and in
their heads! You never know what may happen that will
derail your current lesson plan, so you need to have backup
plans available to pull at a moment's notice.
• Most of the time, the planning involves taking the
assessment data from your previous lessons and using it to
develop your plans for the next unit (Teacher Certification,
2019)
• For a starter, it is usually difficult, as they may not have
previous lessons plans from the past. Teachers needed to
be flexible open minded.
• Developer
• The more you get to know your students, the more you
realize that the worksheets that come with your
assigned activity just aren't going to be enough.
• You will become a developer of resources - making
worksheets, designing assignments, creating
PowerPoint presentations to go along with your
lessons.
• You'll stop at nothing to make sure your students are
all taught in the way that suits them best (Teacher
Certification, 2019)
• In the “3 branch” model of TVET Education by
Schrode, 2017and made modified for PNG
context by the author of this “Guide” best

play in their roles as Teachers and Instructors.

• Teachers play important role in the life of any
citizens of a Country to become successful in
career and business.
• Teachers wear many “hats” at the same time
apart from carry out their core function.
Teachers play a fundamental role in “nation”
building.
