ABSTRACT

I chose to talk about this topic because I like all movies, even the worst one, that people actually
avoid the most. Also, I thought that it might be a good opportunity to find out more about this type of
awards.
I remember the first time I watched a bad movie, a long time ago. It fascinated me because of how
badly that movie was made, how cheap the effects were and how awful the story was. I searched the internet
for reviews for that movie and I found an entire list of bad movies that received The Golden Raspberry
Award.
Is it possible for you to have never heard of The Golden Raspberry Awards because it’s not an as
popular and big event as the Oscar Award, but I think it’s great because someone has to take care of the
other movies who don’t receive any attention.
The Golden Raspberry Awards, also known in short terms as Razzies and Razzie Awards, is a mock
booby prize award in recognition of the worst in the film.
It was invented in 1981 in Los Angeles by John Wilson and Mo murphy and some friends of them
and the first ceremony was held on March 31, 1981.
The term raspberry in the name is used in its irreverent sense, as in "blowing a raspberry". A
“blowing raspberry” involves sticking your tongue out of your mouth and producing a noise similar to that
created by flatulence
The awards themselves are in the form of a golf ball-sized raspberry fixed on a Super 8mm film reel,
all spray painted gold.
Fun fact: Most winners do not attend the Golden Raspberry Awards ceremony or accept their award,
like Bill Cosby, Sandra Bullock and Dwayne Johnson.

I. How it all began

I.1. Genesis

In 1981, the American publicist John j. b. Wilson traditionally held a potluck party at his house in
Los Angeles on the night of the Academy Awards. The Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, are a set
of awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry, given annually by the Academy of Motion
Picture Arts and Sciences, to recognize excellence in cinematic achievements as assessed by the Academy's
voting membership. After the 53rd Academy Awards had completed for the evening, Wilson invited some of
his friends to give random award presentations in his living room. They decided to watch "Can't stop the
music" and "Xanadu" and after that, Wilson decided to formalize the event, so he gave them ballots to vote
the worst movie from those two. Wilson stood at a podium made of cardboard in a tacky tuxedo, with a
foam ball attached to a broomstick as a fake microphone, and announced: "Can't Stop the Music" as the first
Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture. Can't Stop the Music is a 1980 American musical comedy film
directed by Nancy Walker. Written by Allan Carr and Bronté Woodard, the film is a pseudo-biography of
disco's Village People that bears only a vague resemblance to the actual story of the group's formation. It
was produced by Thorn EMI Screen Entertainment, and distributed by independent distributor Associated
Film Distribution. This movie became popular by being the first movie to receive The Golden Raspberry
Award, and for inspiring John Wilson to start the Razzies

I.2. The fame had begun

The impromptu ceremony was a success and the following week a press release an article about
Wilson's event and it was picked by a few local newspapers, including a mention in the "Los Angeles Daily
News" which is the second-largest-circulating paid daily newspaper of Los Angeles, California, with the
headline: "Take These Envelopes, Please".

Approximately 40 peoples came to the 1st Golden Raspberry Awards which was held on March 31,
1981, at John Wilson's loving room alcove to recognize the worst movie that has been made until 1980.
Each category included as many as ten nominees; the maximum was lowered to five the following year to
mirror the Oscars. The 2nd Golden Raspberry Awards had double the attendance as the first and it was held
on March 29, 1982, at an Oscar night potluck party. The 3rd awards ceremony, held on April 11, 1983, in
~5~
turn, had double the second's one number. By the 4th Golden Raspberry Awards ceremony which was held
on April 8, 1984, at Third Street Elementary School in Los Angeles, California, CNN and two major wire
services were there to cover the event. After that Wilson realized that by scheduling the Golden Raspberry
Awards before the Academy Awards, the ceremony would get more press coverage: "We finally figured out
you couldn't compete with the Oscars on Oscar night, but if you went the night before, when the press from
all over the world are here and they are looking for something to do, it could well catch on," said Wilson in
a BBC News, and that’s how it became popular.

The term raspberry is used in its irreverent sense, as in "blowing a raspberry". "Blowing a raspberry"
means to place your tongue between your lips and blow. It is usually used as an insult and way of taunting
or a gesture of disrespect. Wilson commented to the author of Blame It on the Dog: "When I registered the
term with the Library of Congress in 1980, they asked me, 'Why raspberry? What's the significance of that?'
But since then, razz has pretty much permeated the culture. We couldn't have done it without Hollywood's
help." Wilson is referred to as "Ye Olde Head Razzberry".

On February 23, 2019, was held The 39th Golden Raspberry Awards was an awards ceremony that
honored the worst the film industry had to offer in 2018. The nominees were announced on January 21,
2019, and the winners were announced on February 23, 2019. In fact, Donald Trump received an award for
worst actor. He played as himself in "Death of a Nation" and "Fahrenheit 11/9".

The award itself is in the form of a "golf ball-sized raspberry" atop a Super 8 mm film reel, all spray
painted gold.

II. Biography of the founders

II.1. John J. B. Wilson was born May 24, 1954 and he is an American copywriter and publicist. He
majored in film and television at University of California, Los Angeles, and after graduation worked on film
marketing campaigns.

John Wilson is the co-founder of the Golden Raspberry Awards, also known as the Razzies along
with Mo Murphy, an annual ceremony dedicated to "honoring" the worst in film. In 1981, while hosting a
potluck dinner at his house on the night of the Academy Awards, Wilson invited his friends to give
impromptu award presentations in his living room. The following year, Los Angeles Daily News covered
the event, the 1st Golden Raspberry Awards, and from behind a cardboard podium Wilson announced Can't
Stop the Music as the first Razzie Award for Worst Picture. Attendance doubled at Razzie award ceremonies
in the following years, and by the 4th Golden Raspberry Awards the event received coverage from CNN and
two major news wires. Wilson has retained an active role in the awards, and is referred to as the "Head
Raspberry".

He also published a book in 2005 for the 25 th anniversary of the

Razzie Awards. The book is entitled “The Official Razzie Movie Guide”. The
book includes an introduction by Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers, a
brief history of the Golden Raspberry Awards, and entries on films organized
thematically which include plot summaries and reviews by Wilson. Wilson
comments on and discusses his picks for the worst films of all time. The
Official Razzie Movie Guide received a positive review in Library Journal,
where it was compared to Golden Turkey Awards and The Fifty Worst Films
of All Time. The book also received positive reception in Wilmington Star-
News the Associated Press and the Long Beach Press-Telegram, but a more
critical review in The Evening Standard.

~7~
About his early life and family, Wilson grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and moved with his parents to
Santa Monica, California, at age 9. At a young age he would skip school in order to watch the Academy
Awards from the bleachers. He attended University of California, Los Angeles, majoring in film and
television. While attending college, he also managed the Fox Theater, Westwood Village. After graduating
UCLA, Wilson obtained a position working on marketing campaigns for movies and as a copywriter for a
sponsor of the Los Angeles Film Festival, and watched over 200 movies per year in this capacity. The LA
Film Festival is an annual film festival held in September in Los Angeles, California. It showcases
independent, international, feature, documentary and short films, as well as web series, music videos,
episodic television and panel conversations. Since 2001 it has been run by the non-profit organization Film
Independent, which since 1985 has also produced the annual Film Independent Spirit Awards in Santa
Monica. In 2005, Wilson stated that he still worked in film marketing, and also worked on film trailers. His
marketing work has included publicity for the Academy Awards also known as The Oscars: "When they
found out that I did the Razzies, they looked at me like I was a spy," said Wilson to The Blade, also known
as the Toledo Blade, is a daily newspaper in Toledo, Ohio, in the United States.

~8~
II.1. Maureen Murphy also said Mo Murphy, I couldn't really find any pieces of information about her
besides that she is a Los Angeles based Editor, whose projects have included award-winning films, shorts,
documentaries, trailers and other marketing videos, including “Ben Hur” and “The Shack”.

Murphy edited two Coca-Cola Refreshing Filmmaker award-winning shorts, a film for Project Greenlight as
well as political campaigns; so to speak she excelled in the industry of film editing

III. All the Awards

III.1. Most important current awards

 Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture

1980- 1st Golden Raspberry Awards

Can't Stop the Music is notorious for being the first winner of the
Worst Picture Golden Raspberry Award
A popular review of the movie from an IMDB user:
“Oh, GOD, this movie is so painfully, excruciatingly, mind-numbingly
BAD, I want a copy for my personal collection! I've never been the
biggest fan of disco--though I do have a few records in my collection--
and didn't really miss it when it died the first time around, but this
movie had to have been the proverbial nail in the coffin. I've nicknamed
it "Please Stop the Music" because that final song during the "concert"
has permanently embedded itself into my psyche and won't let go!
Ouch! Anyway, the old saying goes that a film is only as good as its, and
this one had all three strikes against it. No matter how hard you try to
look away, you can't help but look on in horror as it continues. Be prepared to laugh yourself silly over the
unintentional humor, the stiff acting, and the convoluted "HEY KIDS! LET'S PUT ON A SHOW!"
storyline.”

Personally, I think that this movie was awful because the plot was weak and the acting was really
bad, the filming also

Holmes & Watson is a 2018 American mystery buddy
comedy film written and directed by Etan Cohen. The film stars
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as the eponymous characters
Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, with Rebecca Hall, Rob Brydon,
Steve Coogan, and Ralph Fiennes in supporting roles. The plot
follows the famed detective duo as they set out to find the culprit
behind a threat at Buckingham Palace.
A popular review of the movie from an IMDB user:
“I always thought giving birth was the most painful thing I would
ever experience. I was wrong. Watching 5 minutes of this movie
was far more painful. I wish I could rate this movie 0/10. Absolute
waste of time. I tried to laugh but was forcing myself in hopes that
it would get better.”
The review speaks for itself.

 Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor

1980- 1st Golden Raspberry Awards

Neil Diamond is an American singer-songwriter, musician and actor.

With 38 songs in the top 10 on the Bill Board Adult Contemporary
charts, Diamond has sold more than 100 million records worldwide,

was the first to be receive the The Golden Raspberry for the worst actor
in 1980, for playing in “The Jazz Singer” as Yussel Racinovich.

2019-39th Golden Raspberry Awards

Donald Trump is the current president of the United States.

He was nominated for The Golden Raspberry Award on 39 th
ceremony for playing in “Death of a Nation” and “Fahrenheit 11/9”
as himself. His acting was pretty bad, besides that, he had exclusive
cuts that are taken out of context and had scenes to make him look
good as a president.

 The Razzie Redeemer Award

This is an award presented at the annual Golden Raspberry Awards to a past Razzie Award nominee or
winner who had subsequently "become a respected artist" and come back from critical and/or commercial
failure. The award was introduced in 2014.

 Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Screen Couple 1994–2009

1994-15th Golden Raspberry Awards

In 1994 Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt got the award for playing in
“Interview with the Vampire”.
“Interview with the Vampire” is a 1994 American gothic romantic
horror film starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. The film focuses on Lestat
(Cruise) and Louis (Pitt), beginning with Louis's transformation into a
vampire by Lestat in 1791. The film chronicles their time together, and
their turning of a ten-year-old girl, Claudia (Kirsten Dunst), into a vampire.
The narrative is framed by a present-day interview, in which Louis tells his
story to a San Francisco reporter.
A popular review of the movie from an IMDB user:
“The occasional good horror flick can make an interesting evening.
Vampires are always fun. And hey, here we have some name stars: Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. And it all does
come to-gether. To produce one of the most gawdawful, boring, nauseating, DUMB movies ever made. You
can't make out what's happening because of the dark lighting and artsey dartsey camera work. You can't hear
what's happening because when Pitt and Cruise aren't screaming their lines in anger, they're mumbling them.
Okay, we all know that vampires drink blood. But a 90 minute vampire movie should offer a little meatier
plot than an infinity of back to back vampire attacks. The stock of the company that makes fake blood must
have jumped the week they filmed this epic/schlepic. Rarely has so much of it been shed, spilled, saved,
sprayed, sucked, sipped and swallowed. Maybe if I tried watching it again while munching on some
garlic....”

2019-30th Golden Raspberry Awards
In 2009 Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper were nominate to this award
and got it for playing in “All About Steve”
“All About Steve” is a 2009 American comedy film directed by Phil Traill
that stars Sandra Bullock, Thomas Haden Church, and Bradley Cooper as
the eponymous Steve. The film is the winner of two Golden Raspberry
Awards and has a 6% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes.
A popular review of the movie from an IMDB user:
“First let preface that this movie was not my first choice to see tonight, but
after The Hangover and The Proposal, I was cautiously optimistic Sandra
Bullock and Bradley Coooper would carry this movie even if it was a
lightweight premise. How wrong I was!
The movie goes wrong the second these two meet for their blind date and never looks back. The
main reason I think I had such a disconnect with this movie is because the characters do not act like any
living person on this planet. Furthermore, Sandra Bullock does not have a clear role to play: she's vacillates
between being sophisticated and clueless, at all times when it's convenient for the plot. I don't know if I was
supposed to sympathize with her or not, but the eventual effect was annoyance! It's not a good sign when
you're hoping that they just leave her at the bottom of that well. Bradley Cooper basically just smiles
throughout the movie.
The movie also can't decide what genre it wants to belong to. It tries to be a comedy, a drama of self
discovery, a satire of cable news, and a natural disaster movie (whether it be tornado or abandoned well) and
fails at all attempts. Let it be said that the tornado looks good and that's about the best thing I can say about
this movie.
I think I laughed twice during the film, but I can't remember if it was related to what was on screen
or my on disbelief that I was in this theater. Sadly, I would be willing to bet that a conversation with a real
crossword puzzle designer for ninety minutes would be more fun than sitting through this mess!”

III.3. Most important special awards

1997- Worst Reckless Disregard for Human Life and Public Property
“Con Air” is a 1997 American action thriller film directed by Simon
West, written by Scott Rosenberg, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. The
film stars Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, and John Malkovich, with Steve
Buscemi, Colm Meaney, Mykelti Williamson, Ving Rhames, Nick
Chinlund, Jesse Borrego, Jose Zuniga, and Monica Potter in supporting
roles.

The picture was released theatrically on June 6, 1997 by Touchstone

Pictures and was a box office success, grossing over $224 million against a
production budget of $75 million. Critics gave the film mixed reviews, but
praised Cage and the cast performances as well as its action sequences,
stunts, and Malkovich's portrayal of the villain. The film borrows its title from the nickname of the Justice
Prisoner and Alien Transportation System.

A popular review of the movie from an IMDB user:

“Oh dear oh dear. Just watched this absolute JOKE of a movie.
What is the point of this movie? None. Silly macho characters and dialogue. Nonsensical story and setting.
But the worst feature has to be the acting. Nobody, not even this star-studded cast, can do anything with this.
They don't even look as if they are trying, they are just hamming it up.
Every cliché imaginable - surely this film is a deliberate send up? But maybe not??? Some top acting talent
is right here. But what could any of them possibly have been thinking of - Cusack, Malkovich, Cage. Why
were they so desperate to make chumps of themselves? Who knows? It's garbage - total and utter trash.”

2002-Most Flatulent Teen-Targeted Movie

“Jackass: The Movie” is a 2002 American reality comedy film

directed by Jeff Tremaine. It is a continuation of the stunts and pranks by
the various characters of the MTV television series Jackass, which had
completed its unique series run by this time. The film was produced by
Lynch Siderow Productions and Dickhouse Productions. MTV Films and

~ 16 ~
Paramount Pictures released it to US theaters on October 25, and it grossed $79.5 million worldwide. The
show features all the original Jackass cast, including the leader Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O,
Ryan Dunn, Jason "Wee Man" Acuña, Chris Pontius, Preston Lacy, Dave England, and Ehren McGhehey.
Brandon DiCamillo and Raab Himself also appear but not as frequently as in the show. Other regular
Jackass personalities who made appearances include Rake Yohn, Manny Puig, Phil Margera, and April
"Ape" Margera. In addition, Rip Taylor, Henry Rollins, Spike Jonze, boxing star Butterbean, Mat Hoffman,
and Tony Hawk make cameo appearances. An unrated version of the film was released in 2006, with a
runtime of 88 minutes long.

A popular review of the movie from an IMDB user :

“Funny???? Are we talking about the same movie? Stupid YES!!! Idiotic YES!!! Bizarre YES!!! Please
tell me who in their right mind thinks this is funny, because if they do they seriously need to get their head
examined. Or at the very least need a life.
I have watched all and I mean ALL kinds of movies and have never been more turned off by the
IDIOTIC, TOTALLY WRECKLESS and DANGEROUS acts these idiots perform.
I can just imagine how many preteens and teenagers that watched this stupid movie and perhaps thought
to them selves, "hey, so and so, I dare you to jump from that condominium roof top into the pool, Jackass
style?" Which by the way really did happen, was video taped by a friend and the kid missed the water by 24
inches breaking his legs in the act. We all saw it on the news when cops took the video as evidence and
released it to the news reporters.
And these acts with animals like bulls, sharks, snakes and alligators just to name a few and then stand
there in front of the camera laughing like a bunch of STUPID, RETARDED IDIOTS is so outright
dangerous I think they should BAN these idiots from making these films. WHY?? because we have
children, and anyone under 18 is considered a child, watching these acts and not all, Thank God, but you
and I know that there are few out there just waiting for the moment (no parents or guardians around) when
they see the opportunity to "just try it out to see what will happen".
I just think this goes beyond the line of sanity and shudder of the thought that a bored, naive child will
be urged, dared or coerced by his so-called friends to do a stupid act "Jack Ass Style". “

~ 17 ~
Conclusion

The Golden Raspberry award is an important ceremony that started not quite a long time ago and its
importance is increasing by every ceremony.
Basically. this ceremony promotes bad movies, that nobody watches, John Wilson wanted to chide the
creators and the actors and maybe they will get better by time and make better movies.
I enjoy talking about this topic because is something I like since I was a child, the industry of
Cinematography. I would really like to work in this industry because it seems interesting to me and I think
anyone can work there, if you have the desire to.
Studying about this topic made me realize that people think this ceremony is not that important, but I
think we should appreciate more this kind of ceremony because those people worked hard to make those
movies and The Golden Raspberry Award gives them some attention if nobody does.
