Influence of Korean Drama and motivation of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges High School
Students in attending classes this study utilized a descriptive-correlational survey method of
research which involved students as the respondents. Frequency count weighted mean,
percentage and Pearson-r product moment correlation were used to treat the data gathered. A
survey questionnaire was used to gather the data.

Findings revealed that bullying and motivation of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges
High School Students in their academic performance which denotes a marked or low relationship
and it is means that if the level of bullying is high, it does not affect their academic performance.

The researcher recommends the teachers should educate students on certain issues
related to Influence of Korean Drama, monitor their child’s behavior in an out of school, the

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTINGS

INTRODUCTION

According to Kwon (2018), Korean drama or K-drama refers to televised

Dramas in Korean language, made in South Korea, mostly in a miniseries format,

with distinctive features that set it apart from regular Western television series or

soap operas. Korean dramas can be set in contemporary times or in historical

settings, the Korean word for the latter being “sageuk”. ”Sageuk” in English

literature it usually refers to historical films and television series. Different genres

apply to these two types, from romantic comedies and action series to fusion

science fiction dramas, South Korea started to broadcast television series in the

1960s, today’s mini “deurama” format of 12-24 episodes started in the 1990s,

Transforming traditional historical series to this format, as well, creating the notion

Of “fusion sageuks”. “Deurama” or Drama means a television drama or a soap

Opera.

Based on the author Castor, (2017), Korean dramas or Koreanovelas have

become regulars of Filipino primetime TV. The first Korean-drama aired in the

Philippines was Bright Girl; it was followed by more famous shows like Descendants of

The Sun Love in the Moonlight, and My Sassy Girl are just three of the many K-dramas

that stole the country’s heart. The Asian drama trend in the Philippines began with the

Airing of Taiwanese show Meteor Garden in 2003. The storylines of Korean dramas are

not as easy to predict as local dramas and the pacing of the plot is much faster

compared to local dramas. The Korean way of story-telling is new to Filipino viewers.

Production teams of Korean dramas spare no effort in their craft. From the locations, to
12

the set-up, and to the cinematography, they ensure that their shots come out beautifully

on the screen. Scenes are displayed as if you are watching a full-length film. Take a

look at Scarlet Heart Ryeo and Goblin to see how breathtaking they can be. It has to be

said That Korean stars are attractive. Whether on-scam or off-scam, they look cute,

especially combined with their sense of fashion. They make Korea’s fashion shine

Beautifully on-screen. ‘Hallyu’ refers to South Korea culture’s rising

popularity worldwide. As one aspect of its culture climbed, the demand for others,

such as Korean cuisine, Korean songs, Korean fashion, and Korean dramas,

increased in fame too. The popularity of “Koreanovelas” has stayed strong for

more than a decade. And because of these Reasons, they will continue to be

staples in Filipino TVs for more years to come.

According to Bacon (2015) when “Gangnam Style” by Psy hit YouTube

Like a tsunami, many people were surprised to discover how popular Korean

music and dramas are In America and outside of Korean. Korean dramas are hot

on video streaming sites like “Hulu” and Netfix. Currently airing dramas can’t be

subtitled and loaded quickly enough to satisfy their English-speaking audience.

Theoretical Framework

According to Ram (2017), this study investigates the impact of South Korean

Television dramas on viewer perception. Using “ Gerbner’s” cultivation theory as the

theoretical framework, the study examined the effect of South Korean drama consumption

on the perceived prevalence of single life and of having fewer children in married life.

Gerbners Cultivation Theory is about the exposure television, over time, subtly cultivates
13

viewer perceptions of reality. The study also tested the causality of cultivation effects

through a priming methodology. Result indicated consumption of dramas positively depict

the lifestyle of single and married people with fewer children significant affected the

perceived prevalence of having children in married life among viewers. However, the

exposure to dramas did not influence the perceived prevalence of single life. The findings

provide public health policy makers and communication campaigners with valuable

theoretical insight as they develop campaigns to increase declining birth rate in South

Korea. Additional discussion of practical implications of the study findings is provided.

Based to the author Jin and Jeong (2010), on the ground of “Gerbner’s “ cultivation

theory, it examined the effect of South Korean drama consumption on the perceived

prevalence of single life and having fewer children in married life. It also tested the

casualty of cultivation effects through a priming methodology. Result indicated that the

perceived prevalence of having fewer children in married life on television. The findings

provide public health poicy-makers and communication campaigners with valuable

theoretical relationship, as well as their practical implications.

According to Naidu, (2015), Korean drama s are no different from our regular TV

serials. They all contain enough drama, comedy and romance, just our TV serials here,

but what sets Korean dramas apart is their approach in these dramas. Unlike native TV

serial Korean dramas have maximum run of 16 episodes per series ass conclude. This

approach in Korean dramas keeps it fresh to the audience

Statement of the Problem

This study is intended to find out the effects of Korean series addiction to
14

The academic performances of grade 9 students in RMMC.

Specifically this study seeks to answer the following questionnaires

1. What are the influences of Korean Drama Series to the grade 9

students?

2. What are the academic performances of the grade 9 students?

3. Is there any significant relationship between the influence of Korean

Series and the student academic performance?

Hypothesis

Problem 1 and 2 are Hypothesis free

Ho3: There is no significant relationship between the influence of Korean

Drama Series and the academic performance of grade 9 students.

Scope and Delimitation

The focus of this study is to determine the influence of Korean drama series to the

academic performances of Grade 9 students of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges.

In addition, the respondents of this study will be the student who are into Korean drama

series who were officially enrolled at the institution of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial

Colleges High School Department during the school year 2018-2019.

Significance of the Study

15

This study will determine the influence of Korean drama to the academic

performance of grade 9 students. It will also be a beneficial to the school personnel,

parents, students and to the future researchers.

School Administrators. They will know on what are the effects to those students

who watch Korean drama series and also they may help their students on what to advice

to them.

Parents. They will know how should their daughter/son on what to do inside and

outside the school so that they could understand them.

Students. This study may help them how to act inside the school and also may

help boost their confidence to participate school’s activities. It will serve as a medicine to

cure their minds not to be so addicted to watch Korean drama series.

Future Researchers. The researchers in the near future will make of the result of

our present study. This study will serve as their basis and comparison to their future study.

Also this research study can be a big help to them for it has the information they needed

if they will be conducting this kind of study.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter presents the relevant concept, theories, and related studies in support

of this research study. The following studies and articles were carefully sorted out from
19

books, internet, journals, and in any type of publication to provide a solid evidence

towards the existence of the problem, as well as the facts and information that will help

the researchers in conducting the current study.

Review of Related Literature

The South Korean TV networks began airing dramas regularly in the early 60’s. At

that time most dramas were made to educate the public and support the military

government. Moreover, TV Korean drama series began popular form of family

entertainment. However, with the boom of Korean drama series, the military began

imposing tighter controls over the “poor taste” content and required the networks to

allocate more broadcasting time to news and educational programmers. Later on, in the

year 1980’s, the variety of Korean dramas increased. The Korean TV networks began

offering trending dramas, focusing on the lives and love stories of the younger generation

to attract younger viewers (Kalbi, 2010).

Over the years Korean dramas have evolved immensely. But we can all agree that

it has been for the better. The reach and impact they have today is so much better than

back in the day (Manse, 2011).

In a study presented by (Magtortor, 2010) it revealed that, the rising popularity of

Korean culture throughout the world made a great impact on the lives of the teenagers in

today’s generation with its teledramas, films, pop music etc. in her paper it founded that,

youths are the one who are the most influenced by the Korean wave and one of those

are the Filipino youths. Those youths are exposed to the different kinds and genres of

music and Korean drama series. In going to school, you can easily observed that Korean
20

sensations are almost everywhere. You can notice that students are listening and singing

songs in Korean language, talked about their favorite Korean dramas then admire the

actors and actresses in the movie and sometimes impersonate their looks.

In a book entitled “K-drama: A new TV genre with Global Appeal24 9p, 22-24,

2011) presented that, when one of the Korean dramas “Jewel in the palace” had its

stunning success. Some of the countries in Asia that was hitted are Japan, China, Hong

Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Philippines. Through this success, today, there is a high

demand of Korean soap operas/dramas even in countries where Korean television

networks haven’t been broadcast. By the day, encompassing everything from dramas and

movies to food and clothes. The urban youth today prefer everything in Korean.

According to (Casasola, 2009), Korean dramas are undeniably addictive. The plot

can go from cliché but subtle to deep and unpredictable which is probably the main

reasons to why we super love it. The way the elements and the story are presented in a

different ways, adding the fact that Korean actors/actresses are certainly adorable for our

lives. It simply is hard to resist charms of Korean actors/actresses and the impressive

storylines that either blows our and makes us extremely ‘kilig”. Casasola also claimed

that they are certain side effects after watching Korean dramas such as the viewers can’t

stop themselves from watching another episode, their playlist becomes filled with Korean

drama OSTs, cry during heartbreaking and sad scenery, etc.

Moreover, according to (Salmeen, 2009), she stated that: The biggest impact of

Korean dramas is the culture and how well- written the stories are, also the etiquettes and

mannerisms shown. Another impact would be that they consume lot of time because they

are highly addicting.

21

According to (Jin and Joeng, 2009), the purpose of this study was twofold. On the

ground of Gebner’s cultivation theory, it examined the effect of South Korean drama

consumption on the perceived prevalence of single life and having fewer children in

married life. It also tested the causality of cultivation effects through a priming

methodology. Results indicated that the perceived prevalence of having fewer children in

married life was significantly affected by exposure to dramas which positively feature

single life and having fewer children in married life on television. The findings provide

public health policy-makers and communication campaigners with valuable theoretical

relationships, as well as their practical implications.

Even Korean drama constructing multiculturalism among muslin women students.

According to (Saputro, 2009), as a form of racial activity, watching Korean dramas can

establish a new form of identity while at the same time enriching a new perspective of

building multicultural sense. On the other hand as a part of Muslim, they can control

Korean culture that is incompatible with Islamic doctrine. This paper argues that adopting

Korean dramas positively support students in creating multicultural cultures. These

findings may contribute to the information of cultural diversity within the Islamic context.

Many scholars and journalist have questioned reasons for the emergence of

Korean popular culture as a force throughout Asia and speculated on its potential

influence on the future of the region (Yang, 2009, para. 8). Clearly, it is proven that local

audiences tend to be more attracted to cultural products that are similar to their own

compared to unfamiliar ones. From this, it is not surprising that Korean TV dramas and

films succeeded so well because Asian people feel closer to Korean culture than to
22

Western one. Korean entertainers also appeal Asian audiences as a result of this cultural

familiarity, as well as having a similar appearance (Lee, 2007, p. 56).

The Asian media mainly argue that the Korean wave is not a bilateral relationship

in terms of cultural exchange. The one way in influx of Korean pop culture through today’s

Korean wave reinforces an imbalance of cultural industry in the Asian region (Kim, 2006,

p. 109). According to the Korea Herald “the Taiwanese government is considering a ban

on the broadcast of foreign dramas prime time, a measure that seems to be government

and industry to develop a reciprocal and trustful relationship with them and other Asian

countries in order to sustain the Korean wave.

Review of Related Studies

For me as a Korean drama addict it has a good and bad impact to me because

watching Korean dramas is my stress reliever, as a student we have a lot of paper works

to do and we should pass it on time, so in order to cope up with my stress I watched

Korean dramas. But it has a bad effect on me also because sometimes I forgot to do my

assignments in school and get drowsy when entering the classroom because of watching

the Korean dramas according to (Anasarias, 20012)

The popularity of Korean culture really contributed a lot in the country of South

Korea regarding on the rising of their economy because TV dramas, films and music that

attract tourist that becomes just like a domino effect. These tourists bring billions of dollars

into the country. Korea is now enjoying double boom in economic and cultural fields

(Anjaiah, 2011).
23

Filipino youths are also influenced by the Korean looks, to have a Korean look is

to have a Korean hairstyles and fashion in order to have that Korean sense of fashion.

Korean hairstyles became trend in the Philippines today (Kapuso mo Jessica Soho,

2010).

According to (Yap, 2011), beyond kimchi, K-pop and Korean Dramas, Koreans are

becoming a ubiquitous presence in the Philippines with tourist arrivals estimated to reach

one million mark by year end, up by 30 percent from 2010. Based on the data gathered

by Inquirer research, the figure would make them the largest group of foreign citizens to

ever have landed on Philippine soil in single year.

As noted by (Santamaria, 2011), hallyu refers to the wave of the South Korean

entertainment and culture. This hallyu reached the Philippines back in the year 20013. As

seen by Santamaria in the research done by Dr. Crisanta Flores of the University of the

Philippines Dilmiman campus, explained the effect on the Filipino audience of the Korean

drama is when they view such urban scenes in Seoul, South Korea, they dream to go in

Korea. It is because they were attracted by the Korean drama sensation that is happening

in our country.

People have notion that Grade Point average speaks for the academic

performance. Many factors may indicate academic performance that include grades, test

scores, extracurricular activities and leadership. Grades are the main or first in the list

which can define academic performance of a student. Next to this is the test scores

acquired in IQ examination, it sis because most of the students are performing well inside

their classroom. In addition, extracurricular activities are an indicator of academic

performance it is because some of students do not earn good grades from their
24

academics but in their extracurricular activities. Lastly, leadership is also an indicator of

academic performance because some students can lead their groups (Salonga, 2011)

Academic achievement was considered a multi-faceted constructing, which it

composed of different domain. It represent performance outcomes of a certain person

accomplish specific goal. That was focus of activities in instructional environments

specifically in school, college and university. Schools system mostly defined goals that

either apply across multiple subject area. Academic achievements defined that it depend

on the indicator used to measure it (Meibner, Steinmayr, Weidenger, Withein, 2015)

According to (Lee, 2012), an essential addition to the canon of Korean literature

made available in the English language, filling major lacunae in the translation of South

Korean dramatic works. I echo the sentiment of other reviewers that this volume, a long

overdue and much needed publication, accomplishes the task it set for itself most

thoroughly and superbly: to introduce a diverse array of significant achievements by

seven South Korean playwrights.

According to (Tobbing, 2012), the thing that catches the people eyes in the Korean

dramas is not the kind of drama being taught by most students high school English

teachers. Korean drama is not from the English word drama. It originated from the

deurama which refers to a scripted television show. It can be in a wide variety of genres

like romance, comedy, mystery, action, etc. American shows quite resemble with Korean

dramas but is different because Korean dramas have no seasons. A Korean drama only

airs twice a week maximum. That makes their watches hanging.

25

According to (Fate, 2013), because of the popularity of Korean dramas among

Filipino teens become widespread, they influenced most of the Filipino teens day with

funky hairstyles, fashionable clothes, trendy shoes, coal eyeliners, eccentric shades and

the bangs flip and trademarks. Filipino teens imitate how their idols look, how they act

and everything that his/her actor/actresses and Korean drama fans can imitate that too.

There is no doubt, Korean fever is all over the Philippines with its consistent sales of

albums, and Filipino is definitely invaded by Korean Culture.
