AS10 - Mixed Addition and Subtraction With and Without Regrouping

Materials Needed:
Mixed Addition and Subtraction Worksheet in page protector (see next page)
Dry erase markers

When students are able to do both addition and subtraction symbolically, they need to
practice in order to fix the process in their minds. They should practice with mixed
addition and subtraction problems, both with and without regrouping. One practice
page is included with this script; for additional problems, see
www.interventioncentral.com

For the first few problems, use the following verbal cues. When students are able to
solve the problems consistently, withdraw the verbal cues and ask student to “think
aloud.”

Look at the problem and check the sign. What kind of problem is it?

If it is addition

1. Where do you start? (ones)

2. What plus what?
3. Is your answer 10 or more? Do you need to regroup?
4. If yes, say Do it.
5. Write your answer.
6. Where do you move next? Go to Step 2 and continue until the problem is
finished.
7. Read the problem and answer.

If it is subtraction

1. Where do you start? (ones)

2. What minus what?
3. Do you need to regroup?
4. If yes,
a. Where do you go to regroup? Do it.
b. Now what minus what?
5. Write your answer.
6. Where do you move next? Go to Step 2 and continue until the problem is
finished.
7. Read the problem and the answer.

Now look at the next problem on the page. Check the sign and follow the steps to
solve the problem.
