1. OBJECTIVES

The School of Information Technology of the Mapua Institute of Technology Internship


program is a non-classroom learning program in which students work in the industries to
apply skills, methods and theories learned throughout their stay in the Institute.

This OJT program will equip students with necessary knowledge and develop their IT skills in
actual industry project providing gainful insights on corporate working environments. The
OJT companies are afforded with opportunity to have a first-hand pick on potential students
being trained at minimal cost.

The trainee, through this OJT program, shall also focus on the corporate use of Technology,
Management strategies and organizational behaviours. An in-depth discussion on learning
on these topics shall be compiled by the trainee.

Finally, this OJT program is designed for inexperienced students to be trained by


experienced personnel from the industry on specific tasks. With the application of the
students’ skills and theoretical knowledge, the technical expertise and seasoning of
experienced staff actually performing the task is captured, documented, and organized.

2. SPECIALIZATIONS

OJT projects may fall under one of the following fields of specialization:

2.1 DATA BASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (ORACLE)


This specialization concerns design, creation, implementation and
maintenance of database systems with focus on application programming and
design in modern database environment.

2.2 .Net or JAVA Programming


This specialization focuses on the study and development of advance
applications using .Net or Java technology.

2.3 CISCO NETWORKING TECHNOLOGY


In partnership with Cisco Systems through their Cisco Networking Academy,
this specialization trains students on how to provide means to interconnect
autonomous computers and share a collaborative environment of information
convergence.

2.4 HP-UNIX / LINUX


This specialization includes the utilization of system and networking skills to
be used in the HP-UX operating system or LINUX. Students taking up this
track will be taught how to work with UNIX/LINUX commands for system and
network administration, management and maintenance.

2.5 SAS
This specialization focus on Enterprise Resource Planning and Business
Analytics

3. PROCEDURES

3.1 PRACTICUM 1

3.1.a STUDENT QUALIFICATIONS


Students who wish to undergo on-the-job-training or OJT must be qualified as
prescribed in the catalogue of information and should be enrolled in the course for
OJT.

3.1.b ACTIVITIES

1. RESUME SUBMISSION AND PORTFOLIO


Upon enrolment in the OJT course, the student should submit a resume enclosed in a
long white folder to the Technical Assistant of the Dean in the Office of the Dean

2. NON-TECHNICAL SEMINARS
The trainee must submit a minimum of three (4) non-technical summary narrative
reports (e.g. career development orientation, job interview, power dressing for
work).

3. COMPANY SCREENING
As may be desired, companies may do their own screening of OJT applicants upon
receipt of the letter of recommendation of the school with accompanying documents
(resume of student, summary of skills, etc).

4. ACCEPTANCE LETTER
The trainee, after being accepted by the company for the training should secure a
LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE from the company and should be addressed to the Dean of
School of IT.

5. All documents should be compiled and scanned to be submitted to the course


coordinator at the end of the term as one of the final requirements.

3.1.c Grading System

Non-Technical Seminars 70%


4 Seminars (15% each) 60%
Group Participation 10%
Submitted Documents 20%
Others (subject to coordinator’s preference) 10%

Note: Non-compliance of at least one of the following submittals will mean a grade of I
(incomplete).

3.2 PRACTICUM 2

3.2.a SUBMISSION OF WAIVER


Upon submission of LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE by the company to the Office of the
Dean, the trainee shall immediately secure a waiver for OJT from the Dean’s Office.
The form must be accomplished by the trainee to formalize the training, a copy of
which must be submitted to the Dean’s Office for record purposes.

3.2.b OJT DURATION
Students who are under the OJT program are required to render a minimum of 244
hours of company work. During this time, students are expected to be involved in
real world situation by working on and applying their skills on projects, research or
any related activities the company will provide to the trainees. At the same time,
students should understand management strategies and organizational behavior.
Students are not allowed to request for over-time work and early release of
Certificate of Completion of the training. A violation of this provision will mean no
credit.

The student will also be required to submit his/her official company schedule with the
starting date and the expected date of completion of 244 hours.

3.2.c ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORTS


Students must submit four (4) progress/accomplishment reports as prescribe by the
course coordinator/adviser. Submission dates will be announced and should be
strictly followed. The last rendered date on the DAR should be on or one day before
the said schedule.

3.2.d OJT PROJECT


Students must be involved in a project, research or other IT related activities based
on the company’s requirements which must be approved by the OJT adviser. In
cases when the company does not assign a project, the trainee must prepare a
project proposal with solution based on problems / opportunities observed by the
trainee for acceptance of the company. Students without an approved project at the
end of the term will have to re-enroll the OJT course.

3.2.e PARTIAL COMPANY RATING FORM


After completing the 244 hours, the trainee shall submit to the company the
company rating form for evaluation and assessment. The company rating form is
available at the Office of the Dean. The HR Head or its equivalent should sign the
company rating form. The company in return shall send to the Office of the Dean the
duly accomplished form enclosed in a sealed and signed envelope.

3.2.e Grading System

Partial Company Rating 50%


Documents (DARs, Project proposal, etc.) 40%
Others (subject to coordinator’s preference) 10%

Note: non-compliance of at least one of the following submittals will mean a grade of I
(incomplete).

3.3 PRACTICUM 3

3.3.a OJT DURATION


Students who are under the OJT program are required to render a minimum of 244
hours of company work. During this time, students are expected to be involved in

any related activities the company will provide to the trainees. At the same time,
students should understand management strategies and organizational behavior.

3.3.b ACCOMPLISHMENT REPORTS

After completing the 244 hours, the trainee shall submit to the company the
company rating form for evaluation and assessment. The company rating form is

duly accomplished form enclosed in a sealed and signed envelope.

3.3.d FINAL DOCUMENT


As a major requirement for the course, a final documentation must be submitted by
the trainee. This document must contain details of the activities done by the trainee
in the company. The format and contents of the final document is given in item 5.

3.3.e ORAL PRESENTATION


The trainee should present his activities in the company to a panel of critics. The
trainee is considered passed if the members of the panel concur to the trainee’s
accomplishments.

3.3.f Grading System

Final Company Rating 50%


Presentation 40%
Others (subject to coordinator’s preference) 10%

(incomplete).

4. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

4.1 OJT STUDENTS

a. Attend orientation on the requirements/criteria of the OJT to be conducted by the


OJT adviser/coordinator.
b. Validate the endorsement of the OJT adviser through actual work with IT
organization.
c. Submit to the OJT adviser/coordinator company evaluation, accomplishment report/s
and all the other documents required by the course coordinator
d. Prepare documents for oral defense.
e. Attend oral defense as scheduled by the OJT adviser/coordinator.
f. Rate/evaluate the company before the end of the internship program.
g. Submit the final document for the project and internship program following the
format provided in the course.
h. Observe and practice professionalism at all times.

4.2 OJT COORDINATOR

a. Gives orientation on the requirements/criteria of the OJT.


b. Monitors and evaluates progress reports.
c. Approves trainee’s project.
d. Coordinate with faculty members who may be the panel of critics for
project presentation of the trainees.
e. Assesses the trainee’s overall performance as per criteria prescribed in the
OJT syllabus.

5. DOCUMENT FORMAT

The document to be prepared by the trainee for defense must comply with the following
requirements/format:

IT199R GUIDELINES

1. The class will be divided into groups and a leader per group will be assigned by the OJT/Course
Coordinator. Refer to the leader for duties and responsibilities (to be given by the coordinator
2. Check your Blackboard account (IT199R course) and or the official SOIT Facebook page for
updates, announcements and reminders.
3. Submission of Certificate of Attendance and Narrative Reports of Non-technical seminars
conducted in school is due a week after the schedule and should be uploaded in Blackboard.
Topics are to be approved by the Course Coordinator.
4. Student should submit a long white folder to the Technical Assistant on the date specified by the
Course Coordinator. It should contain the following:
a. Photocopy of CM
b. Resume (MAPUA Format)
c. Signed IT199R Guideline
5. Student will scout for an IT company, and have it approved by the Course Coordinator using the
Endorsement Request Form (ERF). The Form is available at the Dean’s Office.
a. The list of companies with MOA to the institute will be endorsed by the Center for
Career Services (CCS).
b. If the preferred company is not included in the MOA List, student should present a
company profile to the course coordinator for review. If the company is approved in
principle, the student will send the form to CCS. CCS will then call the company for
possible partnership with the school and write a note on the ERF if the partnership is
already for processing. Student will resubmit the noted ERF to the course coordinator.
c. Approval and signing of ERF is done on the availability of the course coordinator, which
starts 5th week of the term/quarter.
d. This ERF should be signed and attached upon submission of request of Endorsement
Letter to the office of Dean of School of IT.
6. Student will be given an Endorsement Letter ONLY ONCE (except on Special Cases).
7. Upon submission of Endorsement letter to the approved company, the HR personnel and/or its
counterpart should send an ACCEPTANCE letter addressed to the Dean of SCHOOL of IT.
8. Original Acceptance Letter should be submitted to the SOIT Tech. Asst. for filing
9. Acceptance Letter is the FINAL requirement for the course IT199R (OJT1).
10. Student should secure an electronic copy of all the forms and documents signed by the course
coordinator. This is due during the 11th week of the term and to be submitted through
Blackboard.
Note:
1. Non-compliance of at least one of the following submittals will mean a Grade of I.
2. Failure to submit any of the requirements above will mean a Grade of 5.
3. All signed documents should be personally submitted to the Technical Assistant and be
inserted/included in the LONG White Folder (Portfolio)
