English Creative Task (Rationale)

Creative Task → Rationale → ATLs

Introduction
In this unit on The Importance of being Earnest, we have completed a total of three
creative tasks - Writing a monologue on a character who has never appeared in the play,
making our own interpretation of The Importance of being Earnest, and writing two love
letters between Cecily and Algernon. By doing these tasks, it allowed me to express my
creativity and incorporate my thoughts on the film while emphasizing the connections
between the modern and the Victorian era. These tasks also allowed me to develop a better
and stronger understanding of the story and thus, provided me the chance to express my
viewpoints and creativity. For this rationale, I have decided to do it on the proposal as I
believe that I have used the most ATL skills - namely creative thinking, communication, and
information literacy skills.

ATL: Creative Thinking Skills (Criterion C)

Firstly, I have used creative thinking skills to manage my time effectively and to complete
all the necessary tasks on time. When completing the proposal, I was able to come up with a
brief mind map of the ideas for the proposal (see image 1 below), so that I could have a
concise idea of the points that I wish to include. Having a concise idea of what to include is
beneficial because this would help ensure that nothing I do in the proposal overlaps and to
ensure that no points in my proposal would be conflicting. By doing this, it will allow me to
communicate more effectively and to be more persuasive, hence achieving the overall
purpose. In addition, I have demonstrated creative thinking skills when completing the
proposal as it is all written from my perspective and my knowledge. In my proposal, I’ve set
The Importance of Being Earnest in the modern world, crime fighting, which is significantly
different from the original, but I believe it will work nonetheless as the theme and the
characters are very similar. In my version of The Importance of Being Earnest, one of the
main character, Jack, has two different identities (Ernest) which are very similar to the
original play. However, the only difference is that the ‘Jack’ in my play is totally innocent. He
suffers from dissociative identity disorder which makes him totally vulnerable to the truth. I
came across to this idea with the disorder from a Netflix show that I usually watch called
‘Bates Motel’, a TV show that talks about a teenage boy called “Norman Bates” who also
suffers from a dissociative identity disorder and has a hobby of killing others. Here I have
demonstrated creative thinking skills here as I am able to use my knowledge and skills from
multiple contexts and make connections between them. I am also able to compare my
conceptual understanding of the two play, hence shows my understanding of the play.

ATL: Communication Skills (Criterion B & D)

Secondly, I have used communication skills to communicate my ideas effectively
throughout the whole proposal. Since the purpose of the proposal is to persuade the TV
producers in believing that my interpretation would work, I would then have to persuade
them as persuasive as possible. The first thing I did to achieve this was by structuring my
proposal in a neat and organized way. I structured my entire proposal with little subheadings
such as the Introduction, then the background of the play, scenes, theme, characters,
summary plot, mood board and lastly a conclusion. I did this so that the person reading my
proposal can clearly follow the plan and to help them in understanding my alterations. The
second thing that I did was adjusting my writing style so that it is appropriate for persuading
and a proposal. Throughout the proposal, I have written most of my ideas using the PEE
structure so that I could explain in detail of the reasoning behind each of my decisions and
why the characters would fit in each role. I have also changed my writing style as if I am
communicating with the reader (see image 2 below). In doing this, it helps to make the
readers enraptured from point one and to hook them into reading the proposal.

ATL: Information Literacy Skills (Criterion B)

Lastly, I have used information literacy skills to collect new ideas and express my
information in a more visually appealing way. In my proposal, I have created a mood board
(see image 3 below) to help the person reading my proposal to have a better general
understanding of the theme and the atmosphere created by my adaptations, and let them
see what I plan on making from my proposal. Most of the pictures in my moodboard show
the setting of the play, which would give the readers a better visual imagination when
reading the proposal, thus increases the chance of it being approved by the producers. As
mentioned before, I have also used subheadings for each of the categories, allowing the
readers to follow the proposal smoothly, hence also shows that I am able to make an

effective presentation style for a proposal. In terms of collecting and referencing the
information, I have taken inspiration from the original playbook as I’ve kept most of the
characters and themes the same. I then made alterations based on the book and I followed it
up with reasonings behind it (see image 4 below). Image 4 shown below shows the reasons
as to why I wish to keep the theme same, hence shows my knowledge to the play, my
information literacy skill (specifically research/collecting information), and the reasons behind
my alterations.

Conclusion
In conclusion, I have clearly demonstrated the use of various ATL skills towards The
Importance of Being Earnest and my chosen creative task - which is the proposal. I think
through the creative task that I have chosen, I have successfully displayed my knowledge
and understanding of the play as most of the elements that I have added/changed comes
from my real-life experiences and knowledge that I have. By doing these creative tasks, it
gave me the opportunity to expand my imagination towards the original play and make
relevant connections to our real-life; and using our own ideas to further develop and create
better understandings and interpretations to the story itself.
