Oral Commentary Reflection

Ivan Lee Y9P

In my IOC, I do not think that I’ve done a great job and I felt really
disappointed. The commentary did not go as expected and definitely shocked
me as to how bad I was. I think that the pressure sitting in front of the
teacher really got me. I was thinking too much at the time and I kept
stuttering. I even stuttered at the beginning of the commentary. However,
I do think that my speaking has improved halfway through the commentary.

Another thing that I don’t think that I’ve done as well is the Q&A part.
The teacher asked me a total of two questions and I struggled to answer
both of them. When the teacher asked me the first question, I answered it
incorrectly for a few times but later got it right. I find this quite
disappointing because this just shows that I did not think before
answering. I struggled in the second question as well because I wasn’t
sure if my answer is valid or good enough for the question.

One positive thing from my commentary is my analysis of the poem. I think

that I have covered almost everything in my commentary. I think that I
was successful in explaining all my analysis but not smoothly as I
stuttered a lot. I have successfully mentioned the theme, the mood of the
speaker, background information of the poem and poet, poem structure and a
line by line analysis.

In summary, I do not think my oral commentary went as well as expected.

Even though there are some positives, the negatives overtake it. If I were
to do this again, I must improve my English speaking. I could achieve this
by practicing my commentary more often in front of family members or
friends or just speak more English in general. I must also improve to
handle pressure when speaking. I could achieve this by taking more time to
think before answering. I must also improve my English as it would be very
awkward if I took a long time to think in between conversations.
