EXERCISE 1:
KINDS OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH AND VARIABLES
I. Directions: Write on the blank the kind of quantitative research (under column B) that is
well suited to the given title (under column A).
Column A Column B
__________________1. Effects of Aspirin on the Reducing the Correlational
Cholesterol Level of Obese People
__________________2. Effects of Instagram on the Visual Literacy Descriptive
of Teenagers
__________________3. Effects of Utilizing an Interdisciplinary Ex Post Facto
Curriculum on the Health Literacy of Four Sciences Classes.
__________________4. The Relationship Between a Teacher’s Experimental
Personality an d Performance Evaluation
__________________5. Technical Capability of Water Treatment Quasi-
Device experimental

II. Directions: For each study described below (a) identify whether the research is
nonexperimental or experimental, and (b) identify and label the variables of interest.
NOTE: If the research is non-experimental, further identify whether the research is
descriptive, correlational, or quasi-experimental.

1. A researcher is interested in the potential relation between people’s caffeine consumption

and their level of stress. She has participants keep a diary for one month. During this month,
participants count the number of cups of coffee, tea, and soft-drinks they consume, as well as any
other substance that includes caffeine as a key ingredient. In addition, participants make note of
any stressful events they experienced during the month.

2. A researcher is interested in exploring the smoking behavior of fast-food employees. The

researcher sits in the designated employee-smoking area of several restaurants and records how
many smokers are present every 15 minutes starting at 8am and ending at 12pm.

3. A psychologist is investigating whether low lighting in classrooms negatively influences

learning ability. The psychologist also thinks that high temperatures might negatively influence
learning. When participants come to the laboratory, the psychologist flips a coin to determine
which participants will be assigned to low-light environment or to a normal-light environment.
The psychologist then flips a coin again to determine which participants in each of the previously
mentioned groups will be assigned to a room set at 70 degrees or a room set at 85 degrees. After
being given a brief lesson on the history of Scotland, all students are given a test of the material
discussed during the lesson.

4. Researchers are examining the potential association between self-esteem and aggression.
First, researchers ask participants to complete a questionnaire assessing their self-esteem. Two
months later, participants return to complete a questionnaire assessing the frequency in which they
engage in various aggressive acts (such as fighting, screaming, etc.).

5. City workers are interested in finding out how often people disobey traffic laws. Researchers
sit on the corner of a busy intersection and record the number of people who fail to use their
seatbelts, run red lights, or fail to use their turning signals.

EXERCISE 3:
IDENTIFYING THE IQUIRY AND STATING THE PROBLEM

EXERCISE 3.1: LET’S TEST WHAT U KNOW!

I. Directions: Form groups of seven (7) to eight (8) members. Classify the given items by
putting them under the appropriate columns. Exclude items which you think do not
logically belong to any of the categories. The group that gets the most number of correct
items is awarded 20 points. In case of a tie, the group that finishes first wins the game.

II. Directions: Tick the column that best describes how you understand the process of writing
the introductory parts of a quantitative study. Answer this section as possible.
Usually Sometimes Seldom Never

I chose a research topic that is both interesting and
relevant to today’s issues and needs of society.
I consider my resources when choosing a research
topic.
I concluded preliminary research when writing the
introduction of my research paper.
I provide justification for conducting the study.
I state the research gap and explain how my study
fills that gap.
I explain the scope and delimitation of my study.
I specify the significance of the study in the
introduction of my research paper.
I make sure that my research questions are aligned
with the kind of quantitative research I plan to
conduct.
I formulate a thesis statement based on my
research questions.
I know the convention to be observed when
writing a title for a quantitative research.
