Steps in Designing Professional Development

You will use the following steps in planning the Module and completing the
Planning Template

Step Description
Assess Yourself and the I am confident with using technology in the classroom through
Audience different programs and avenues. I am also confident with teaching
others as I have done it since my first-year teaching.
Teachers are consistently being introduced to new technology and
being asked to utilize it more in their classrooms. This is great,
however, they do not receive additional training and instruction
beyond the introductory level, so this course can be very helpful
and meaningful. Any informational handouts/online resources can
be helpful at a later date as well for reference.
Before creating all content, I’ll ask teachers what they want to
know the most about. If teachers are all familiar and confident
with creating a webpage, then I don’t want to create information
for them on that. However, if teachers are clueless as to how to
start, it would be a great idea to do that module. I’ll ask teachers
what they would most like to learn about at the beginning of the
school year and use that information to develop my planning guide
and modules. I’ll give teachers a survey to fill out to help me see
what areas they most need help with and where I should target my
instructional materials.
The audience will have some knowledge of technology with so
much available online today. Some teachers are more familiar and
comfortable with using technology than others, so this module will
be a self-driven module, allow them to stop or go as quickly as
they need. Teachers that are already advanced will be able to assist
others in the module to complete it.
Analyze the Learner This module will be self-paced to allow the learner to go as
quickly, or slowly, as they need. I will also be available to help or
give individualized attention/lesson/help when needed. This way I
can present the information to them in a way that best suits their
learning style.
When teachers fill out the preference form at the beginning of the
year, they will need to indicate how often they use technology in
the classroom and how proficient they feel they are on the
programs of choice. This will allow me to see where they need to
be in the learning process and how to help them best through the
module.
Within the learners there will be different levels. The beginner
level is for teachers that are unfamiliar with technology and are not
currently using technology on a consistent basis in their classroom.
The intermediate level is for teachers that have used some
technology in their classroom, but not necessarily as effectively as
they would like. Their students are consumers of technology and
not producers. The advanced level is for teachers who
consistently use technology in their classroom. Their students are
producers with technology.
When I know how much they know on each topic, I’ll be able to
tailor some instruction to best meet their needs or answer their
questions.
Before beginning these modules, I’ll run the course objectives and
work outline past the administration for permission to continue.
When they agree to the modules, it will help in the meeting times,
PLU credit, and flexibility of observation in the classroom (peer
observations from more experienced teachers).

Select Instructional The overall goal for the end of the year will be for each teacher
Objectives will move to the next level of proficiency. The teachers that are
currently at the advanced level will become mentors for teachers
on other levels.
Before beginning the module, there will be a list of objectives for
teachers to see. It will allow teachers to see where they are going
and what they should know by the end of the module. If they are
working on the module and realize that they aren’t progressing to
the objectives, then they can get extra help and know their level
related to where they should be.
Provide Incentives PLU credit could be a possibility for this course with
administration approval. Other incentives include personal
achievement, increase in student achievement, and being able to
effectively implement the technology standards with confidence.
There may also be days that can be set aside for teachers to work
outside of the classroom and plan/train. These days can be very
beneficial since they are days that teachers are required to be at
work and aren’t extra time spent working. A stipend for the
training would also be a good idea, however this would need to be
cleared by administration and the county level of professional
development.
Plan Materials and in Teachers will be able to use the information that they learn and take
Relation to Audience and it back to their classroom immediately.
Objectives Teachers will be able to request new training as they complete the
modules. If they need to start another module that isn’t ready or
available for them, they can email me and I can set up a new
module for them to work with.
Use Guided Practice Teachers will have time to implement the programs and ideas into
their classrooms and see how they work. They will need to express
how they incorporated the information/program/idea into their
classroom and how it went. I will be available to bounce ideas
around to improve classroom implementation.
Evaluate the Professional At the end of each module, teachers will submit a page explaining
Development Module their experience with the technology and then what they thought of
the module. This is the area when teachers can have input on how
the module is laid out or what information is included or not
included.
Continue to be Available to As teachers finish the module, I’ll be available for them as needed
the adults after they have through email, or face-to-face to help problem solve and
completed the Professional implement.
