CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The study is all about the level of competency in manipulating multimedia devices: its

effect to the work performance of grade 12 ICT students in Semirara National High School.

The Semirara National High School offers Information and Communication Technology

under the TVL track. Many Senior High student enrolled in this strand and yet they do not know

how to evaluate their competencies, if they are good enough to get a job in the future. Some have

chosen this course because they thought that it has a big help to them in the nth future. Levelling

the competency of the students has a big help for our school to know how many percent of the

students will pass or failed on their work performance.

Poor teaching and lack of facilities may lessen the chance of the students to learn more

about manipulating multimedia devices. If the level of competency is too low there is a possibility

that the students are having trouble in coping up the topic.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Notes: please be reminded that Related Literature must be at least

5years old means look for 2010 Related Literature

Knowledge of Computer Technology and computer and computer-based technology has

become tremendously important to technical and vocational teacher in the new information age.

Vocational and technical teachers have realized the value and usefulness of computer technology

in their programs. The problem is they just do not have the necessary skills and knowledge to use

it effectively for instructional purposes. In order to ensure that technical and programs must

continue to enrich the programs to prepare students for the workplace and the society.

Competency-based materials is based upon a competency profile derived from the

competency analysis. As Westera and Sloep (1998) have stated, a CBL environment should be

based on authentic profiles that covers a set of competencies. Woelk (2002) mentioned a

competency gap analysis, identifying what competencies the workers lack to effectively carry out

their jobs, that is, based on what the workers need to know and what they already know.

Instruction in higher education are under pressure to provide more effective and efficient

learning environments and educational experiences to their students. In colleges and universities,

teaching serves as an important vehicle for achieving institutional goals of enhancing students

‘knowledge and learning and engaging them in the learning community to prepare for future

citizen.therefore educators always are looking for ways to make their educational initiatives more

effective (Hsu,1999). The learning experience in higher education has shifted paradigms from an

instructor-focused approach to learner-centered pedagogical methods (Hsu & Wolfe, 2003).

Multimedia allows teachers to integrate text, graphics, animation, and other media into one

package to present comprehensive information for their students to achieve specified course

outcomes. Multimedia permits the demonstration of complicated processes in a highly interactive,

animated fashion and that instructional material can be interconnected with other related topics in

a more natural and intuitive way (Crosby & Stelovsky, 1995).

Instructional systems and educational technology have been gaining great attention by

educators in order to enhance students’ learning. Hospitality educators have become aware of the

benefits and shortcomings of various traditional methods used to provide instruction and training

to hospitality students and practitioners (Feinstein, Raab, & Stefanelli, 2005a) and the possible

benefits of educational technologies; thus educators have been adapting their curricular to take

advantage of new instructional methods. Educational technologies such as multimedia

presentations, simulation methods, online courses, and computer-assisted case-based instruction

are becoming commonplace (Feinstein, Raab, & Stefanelli, 2005b)

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1 SUMMARY

In our study, it includes the competencies that the grade 12 ICT students of SNHS has and

how it affects their work performances. In our research, we discovered that the percentage who

got poor performance were low as the time of practicing and examining goes by. It’s really

important to have this kind of study to observe the improvements of the ICT students towards their

work performance.

5.2 CONCLUSION

After this study, we can conclude that it is important to conduct this kind of study for us to

be aware on how to level the work performances of the ICT students. We can also conclude that

the teaching of actualization in Computer System Servicing at Semirara National High School was

good because there are only few students that are needed to be observed keenly.

5.3 RECOMMENDATION

We can recommend the ICT as a good course to choose for the next Senior high school

students because after this study, we had proved that having and knowing your competencies in

manipulating multimedia devices is a great skill we should really possess, for it helps us to have

easy career life coping to the new technologies in our society.
