Invoking the Great Archangels

Greetings in LVX,

I am familiar with using the invoking Pentagrams to commune with the elemental aspects of the
four Great Archangels. Is this something used within the tradition? Could advice on how to better
commune with the Archangels be given? I have thought of using the descriptions given on the forum
and in Gnosis of the Cosmic Christ and adapting them along with the chants to the Partzuf
meditational technique. I guess what I am seeking is a deeper connection with the Archangels.
Using the elemental pentagrams seems to filter the energy through the element. I am sure that is
the point of it. If other methods of using the invoking pentagrams can be shared that would be
great.

Shalom Jeff!

In the post from the section "Christian Kabbalah" in Does Yeshua Ha Messiah = the Partzuf, there
are some very profound keys given that I think apply to your question. I will quote one passage in
particular in response, and perhaps Tau Malach will have more insights to add to his previous
teachings.

"Now, the tikkune of nefesh corresponds to the tikkune of the Sefirot of Asiyah, and the tikkune of
ruach corresponds to the tikkune of the Sefirot of Yetzirah - their tikkune in union is the unification
of the world of elements, celestial spheres and spirits with the world of angels; the tikune of
neshamah is the tikkune of Beriyah, the world of souls (neshamot) and archangels - the balance of
great cosmic forces established according to Ratzon Elyon, the Will of the Supreme."

So from this I am seeing that in order to communce more directly with forces at the level of
Beriyah - Archangels - we must operate through the agency of spiritual forces first, enacting the
tikkune of our soul, enacting the tikkune of our spiritual relations. We draw these elements,
"celestial spheres and spirits into union with the world of angels," and through enacting this tikkune
of this world, we are enacting the tikkune of our soul, and by enacting these tikkunim, we are
empowered to reach deeper into the world of Beriyah, to enact the tikkune of neshamot.

So, this is a brief answer that seems to get at your question on one level, but perhaps Tau Malachi
will have something more to say...

Salutations in the Light of the Messiah!

Yes, indeed, the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram as outlined in the Order of St. Uriel is a
common way to invoke a communion with the archangel of the sacred circle – if you look into the
version taught there you will find it slightly different than that taught in the Golden Dawn, we
include the intonement of the Blessed Name of Yeshua as we trace the pentagrams, and we trace
them from the spirit or space point, and likewise, our elemental attributes to the points of the
pentagram are different. These differences, however, make for a greater flow of divine energy or
light-power, especially when our art of intonement is known and understood.

The most radical difference, of course, is the internal kavvanot given with the ceremony in our
tradition – a play of breath, sound-vibration and visualization within and behind the outward
gestures; and profoundly, our devekut, cleaving to the Messiah and Shekinah of Messiah.

Adepts in our tradition, rather than envisioning the archangels coming from outside of them, they
envision the archangels emanating from their own body of light, their own subtle body generated
in the image of Yeshua Messiah or Kallah Messiah. We begin the practice in the Generation Stage by
envisioning the archangels magically appearing as though from outside of us, but in the Fruition
Stage we envision them emanating from within us.

If you look into practices for the generation of sacred circle in the great outdoors, and look into
teachings of the Four Winds and Directions, you will also find other ways to invoke and commune
with the archangels of the sacred circle – they are the Divine Powers or personification of the
Winds in the sacred circle, emanations of the Holy Shekinah. In the play of the sacred circle we
discover these Holy Winds or Breaths as external and internal Powers, the distinction between the
outside and inside vanishing – but that, exactly, is the foundation of the play of wonderworking or
magic, for bringing about a shift in consciousness inwardly, we witness wonders transpire
outwardly, and therefore we recognize the inseparability of inner and outer space, and the
inseparability of all that appears in it.

Some masters of the tradition have said that the archangels of the Tree of Life, from Hokmah to
Yesod are the powers of the interior stars in the glory body of Archangel Metatron, the archangels
of the sacred circle being like an emanation of Metatron into space-time, manifesting as Sandalfon,
the Great Ofan, “wheel” or “circle.” This alludes to two mysteries. First, in that Enoch is taken up
in the Great Ascension and in transfigured into Archangel Metatron, it indicates that the presence
and power of the archangels is in us and is actualized through the realization and embodiment of
our soul; hence, as stated above, as much as external divine powers they are also internal to us.
Second, it indicates that contact with the archangels can be invoked through invocations of
Metatron, Torahkiel Yahweh.

In the teachings and practices of the Order of St. Gabriel there is a post on the invocation of the
Supernal Maggid, and many of the names of Metatron are given, along with chants and something
of the intention for which they are invoked – a couple of them directly relate to knowledge and
communion with the holy archangels. Basically speaking, working with Metatron, the Supernal
Maggid, tends to attract the company of the Shekinah at the level of Beriyah, the souls of great
tzaddikim and great maggidim, archangels.

Now, when we seek knowledge and communion with archangels there is a need for purification and
consecration of ourselves, for they are very lofty and vast cosmic forces, immeasurable energy-
intelligences, incomprehensible to our ordinary mind – they are great emanations of the Shekinah
of Yahweh Elohim, abiding in the interior Shekinah, and as such, to attract them and draw near to
them we must increase our energy and vibration in consciousness, remove impurities in
consciousness, and drawing near to Ha-Shem, we must cleave to Ha-Shem, attaching our soul to
the Shekinah of Beriyah. Only then can we entertain a true and direct communion with archangels,
when we resemble them and abide in harmony with the Holy Light from which they emanate.

Purification is essential, for there are archangels of the demiurge and archons, as well as
archangels of God, the True Light, and likewise, there are dark and hostile forces that have great
power and that can put themselves off as archangels, hence, the arch demons. Unless we actively
purify ourselves, and consecrate ourselves, and generate a significantly higher level of energy and
vibration in consciousness, it is unlikely that it will be the archangels of the Holy One that we
invoke, but rather something of an impure emanation, the klippah.
Such invocations, however, do not occur through our own efforts alone, but it is the grace of the
Messiah and Ruach Ha-Kodesh that accomplishes such invocations. Thus, even early on, in a
somewhat impure state, through grace a lesser angel may be sent of the order over which an
archangel presides in the name of that archangel, the messenger assuming the name and
corresponding form of the archangel when appearing to us. Likewise, as we progress in the Way,
and continue to actualize and realize our soul-being, before we are able experience the full
presence and power of the archangels, they may send forth significantly restricted emanations of a
grade that we are able to receive them.

Indeed, until we are able to embody the influence and power of our holy neshamah, the full glory
and power of archangels would be to great and intense for us – completely overwhelming. Thus,
early on, very often they send angels of their hosts in their name or send forth restricted
emanations.

The common misconception in modern spirituality, the new age and occultism is that such great
cosmic forces as archangels are just waiting to serve our human interests, as though at our beck
and call, and therefore proper self-purification and consecration is not taught. In truth, however,
the archangels and angels, true maggidim, are servants of heaven and El Elyon, the Supreme, just
as true tzaddikim are servants of heaven and the Supreme – they are not servants of unenlightened
humankind, and rarely hold the petty interests of worldly humans in mind. Thus, if we wish to
know and commune with archangels – the power of the Sefirot at the level of Beriyah, and wish
them to co-labor with us, and share something of their spiritual power with us, then we must set
ourselves into the service of the kingdom of heaven and El Elyon.

To the extent that we passionately cleave to the Messiah and to the Shekinah of Messiah,
worshipping El Elyon, and serve the kingdom of heaven on earth, the Continuum of Light
Transmission, we are able to know and commune with the archangels, for we generate a resonance
in our energetic being that is in harmony with them and we resemble them.

As the Gnostic Gospel of Philip teaches us, to see, hear and know a spiritual power, we must
become like that spiritual power.

If we wish to invoke angels and archangels of the True Light, then we must live like the angels, live
like the “saints” – the tzaddikim, and we must take up the spiritual labor of maggidim and
tzaddikim.

The key becomes a constant and passionate spiritual life and practice, actively living in submission
to the Shekinah of the Supreme and actively tending the Flame of the Continuum, the generation
of the kingdom of heaven on earth – the suggestion that archangels are actually invoke apart from
this is simply gross ignorance, or egoistic arrogance.

The greater our passion, the greater our cleaving to Ha-Shem and the Shekinah, or to the Messiah
and Shekinah of Messiah, the greater the influx of angelic and archangelic emanations, and even
emanations of the light-power of the Divine Attributes, the Names of God or Sefirot themselves.

The Supernal Sefirot, the Sefirot of Atzilut, form the Mystical Body of the Risen Messiah, therefore,
cleaving to the Risen Messiah we become empowered to invoke the Names of God, archangels,
angels and spirits of righteousness, luminous spirits. In this, the outer and inner Threefold Rite of
Initiation is a principle empowerment for the invocation of the Divine Powers; hence, experiences
of the Light Transmission.

Through our nefesh – when nefesh behamit, our bestial soul, is transformed into nefesh elokit, the
godly soul, we are able to entertain knowledge and communion with luminous spirits of the
celestial spheres and elemental realms, as well as all manner of spirits of righteousness and angels
of our Earthly Mother. Through ruach – specifically the upper ruach, we are able to entertain
knowledge and communion with the angels and spiritual beings-forces of significantly greater
power. Through neshamah we are able to entertain knowledge and communion with archangels and
enlightened beings. Through hayyah we are able to invoke the full power of the Divine Names, the
full force of ruhaniyot and shefa of the Supernal Sefirot, and through yechidah we are able to
experience conscious union with the Holy One, the Divine I Am, Eheieh.

Now, even before the full realization of these various gradations of our soul, through the good
grace of the Risen Messiah and Ruach Ha-Kodesh we can experience fruits of these various aspects
of our soul, but this assumes that we are passionate in our faith, not merely visualizing ourselves as
Yeshua Messiah or Kallah Messiah, but rather that we are living like the Messiah (Christ-like),
drawing our thoughts and emotions, speech and actions into harmony with the Messiah and
Shekinah of Messiah. If we are willing to this, then Divine Grace can accomplish wonders,
regardless of the grade of our actual self-realization.

In this regard, faith, hope and love are, indeed, great powers, leading to knowledge,
understanding and wisdom, Habad.

Naturally, when we are seeking to invoke archangels and angels there is a question of our intention
and why we seek their knowledge and communion – even in the sense of an invocation of our holy
guardian angel. Is it merely curiosity, or a desire for knowledge and power for ourselves alone? If it
is, then if we experience an “archangel” it will be an angel of the demiurge and archons that
comes. Or, on the other hand, are we invoking them in passionate worship of El Elyon, seeking to
bring forth the light and power of heaven upon the earth, and seeking the blessing and uplifting of
all our relations? If that is the case, then, indeed, archangels and angels are likely to come and
worship with us, and share their knowledge and power with us so that we might be empowered to
bless others and bring glory to God, the True Light.

Quite simply, selfish motivations do not accord with God, the True Light, or with the archangels
and angels of the True Light, for selfishness, the desire to receive for oneself alone, is the sitra
ahara, the evil inclination, and the maggidim of the Pleroma of Light do not honor or serve that
bestial inclination.

Basically speaking, the question is: Are we seeking to know God and seeking to draw near to God
and unite with God – seeking knowledge and power for the sake of heaven and the glorification of
God? If that is the case, then the archangels and angels are our siblings, our sisters and brothers in
the Spirit, and they will swiftly come and join with us in our spiritual labor for the sake of the
manifestation of the kingdom of heaven on earth.

In this regard, if we inquire into the invocation of archangels, we are inquiring into how we drawn
near to the Holy One and how we may cause the Holy Shekinah to come to rest upon us. The
essential key to this is given to us by Yeshua Messiah – it is the generation of the Sacred Heart,
active love and compassion; hence, it is living according to the Holy Gospel, the Truth and Light
revealed in our experience.

Another way to actualize our capacity to invoke angels and archangels is through taking up a
continuum for the knowledge and communion with our holy guardian angel and spirit guides, for
often, if the mystical inclination has sparked in us the angel and guides with us have knowledge of
the invocation of the spirits of tzaddikim and maggidim, just as we do in the deeper parts of our
soul. You might say that they hold the remembrance of our soul of light.

Indeed, of all angels our holy guardian angel is the easiest to invoke, and the influence of the
guardian angel naturally begins to enter into play when we set ourselves upon the path, seek
initiation and teachings, and take up a daily continuum of spiritual practice, prayer, meditation
and sacred ceremony.

If we wish to initiate a continuum of seeking knowledge and communion with our guardian angel,
then we will seek to initiate a continuum of self-purification and the generation of merit through
charity and good works. As we take up the continuum of self-purification and the generation of
merit, we will progressively intensify and deepen our continuum of daily spiritual practice – our
continuum of prayer and meditation, progressively seeking to immerse ourselves further in the
spiritual life and practice during the continuum.
As we do this, we will keep the continuum of Shabbat, welcoming the Queen of Shabbat every
Shabbat Eve and keeping the Shabbat holy, and each Shabbat morning, for a lunar cycle from new
moon to new moon, we will invoke our guardian angel in prayer and meditation.

There is a very simple practice for this – we go within and open to the Light from above, and we
invoke Ha-Shem and the Divine Powers, and pray for the knowledge and communion of our
guardian angel.

Invoking, we will envision that an angel of light appears behind us – seeing radiant light shine from
behind us, and feeling radiant love and warmth emanating from behind us, and we will envision
that holy light-being stepping into us and merge with us.

Abiding, we will listen and hear the word of Adonai the angel might bring, and look and see what
the angel might show us – as our communion develops and evolves we will inquire of the angel,
seeking knowledge and understanding of the Path to God.

In such a continuum of practice, of course, we must purify ourselves of self-cherishing, attachment


and aversion. If this is done from vital demand, at best it will be a flight of fantasy, self-delusion,
or at worse, a deceptive spirit might enter in; actual self-purification, the generation of merit and
passionate cleaving to the Messiah and Shekinah of the Messiah is crucial – but if we actually take
up such a continuum, intensifying our spiritual practice progressively from week to week, this
simple practice can prove very powerful and effective.

If in the passage of a lunar cycle an aspirant does not enter into the experience of their holy
guardian angel to any significant extent, then they will cease from the continuum of invoking the
holy guardian angel, and they will not take it up again for three to six months. At times, some
aspirants will pass through many cycles of this invocation before a full and true communion with
the guardian angels is established.

Here it must be said, however, the a continuum of invoking knowledge and communion with the
holy guardian angel is not as central to the Sophian Gnostic tradition as in some other Western
esoteric traditions, for more often than not this comes naturally and spontaneously with a zealous
spiritual life and practice founded upon devotion or worship; and yet more than this, the
spontaneous arising of an experience of the Risen Messiah and reception of the Holy Spirit is
common among our initiates, and quite naturally, with this comes the influence of the guardian
angel, spirits guides, and so on and so forth. Teachings on this practice, as given here, do occur
though for aspirants who wish to take it up, and they can be especially helpful for those living at a
distance who are independent practitioners and who may not be able to receive direct initiation
into our Light Transmission lineage – in such cases, this method of invoking the guardian angel
through a continuum of self-purification and the generation of merit may help facilitate actual
contact.

Here we can also say that spiritual works with the 144 Names of God can also facilitate and
strengthen experiences with archangels and angels, for they are directly connected with this great
luminous assembly and move angelic forces.

In closing we can say that most often, the Holy One communicates with human beings through the
archangels, angels and luminous spirits, for they are emanations and forms of the Divine Presence
and Power with which we can most easily relate and interact. In truth, when there is sincere love
of Yahweh Elohim and our neighbor, all our relations, the angels of Yahweh Elohim are readily
accessible to us. In nothing that I’m sharing do I mean to imply that they are removed from us – on
the contrary, they come among us and walk among us, as do great souls of tzaddikim, and many
have encountered and entertained archangels and angels without ever having known it, such as we
see with Abraham and Sarah, and the “three men” who visit them. According to the tradition, the
Kabbalah, Abraham and Sarah thought they were entertaining mortal prophets, navim, but in fact
they were entertaining three archangels in emanation body, Rafael, Michael and Gavriel.
Indeed, many initiates have had similar encounters, even in our own generation – so truly, the
angels of God are not distant from us, we merely need to bring ourselves into harmony with the
Pleroma of Light from which they emanate and come. When we do, we will receive their
visitations, in dream and vision, and perhaps not only in body of glory, but a body of emanation
that appears in this dimension.

O Holy One, as You have joined to us the Perfect Light and Holy Spirit, join the images of the
angels with us too; let us manifest the full glory and power of the Mystical Body of the Risen
Messiah in the world, true hope in the End-Of-Days. Amen.
