Assessment Part 2
Expanding on your knowledge of the Law of Conservation of Mass. Balance the
following skeleton equation for the combustion of gasoline. (4 marks)
C8 H18 + O2 → CO2 + H2 O
Even though the products of this combustion reaction are invisible, they still have mass
equal to that of the reactants.
In Groups of 4, use the internet as a research tool to please answer the following
questions.
1. What is the best selling vehicle in Canada for 2018? (1 mark)
Answer: Ford F-Series - 909,330.
2. What is the full gas tank capacity for this vehicle? Lowest and highest? (2 marks)
Answer: 87 to 136 L
3. In Kilograms, what is the mass of gasoline? (4 marks)
Answer: Formula for conversion: Volume = Mass / Density.
Density of gasoline = 0.70 ... 0.78 kg/l
1 kilogram of gasoline = 1 / (0.70 ... 0.78) = 1.28 ... 1.43 liters
1 liters of gasoline = 1 * (0.70 ... 0.78) = 0.70 ... 0.78 kilograms
o 1 litre of gasoline weighs 0.78 kilograms (depending on
average temperature)
4. Splitting the difference between the low and high capacity gas tanks, what is the
average size of a full gas tank in litres? (1 mark)
Answer (111.5 average fuel capacity in litres)
5. How much does a full gas tank weigh in kilograms? Pounds? (2 marks)
Answer: 86.97 kilograms/ 191.33 pounds
6. For gasoline, the stoichiometric air-fuel mixture is about 14.7:1. So for every one
gram of fuel, 14.7 grams of air are required. So how many kilograms of air is
required to burn an entire gas tank of fuel in the best selling vehicle in Canada? (2
marks)
Answer 86.97 kilograms of fuel (x14.7) = 1278.45 kilograms of air.
7. What is the total mass of the products produced from burning one full tank of
gas? (2 marks)
Answer: 1365.42 kilograms.
8. If this vehicle averages one fill up per month, what is the mass of the products
produced at the end of each year? What is the total mass of all the vehicles sold in
one year? (2 marks)
Answer 1365.42 x 12 = 16,385.04 each vehicle per year (x 909, 330) =
14899408423.2 kilograms. 14.89 billion kilograms! Or 14 million metric
tonnes!
9. Where do the products of this reaction go? (1 mark)
Answer: The atmosphere
Reflection
1. Post to the discussion board: The previous questions connected the Law of
Conservation of Mass to the issue of the increasing concentration of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere due to the burning of fossil fuels. Reflect on what
horizontal connections you can make based on the Law of Conservation of Mass
and balancing chemical equations. How is this knowledge applicable to any other
real-world problems or scenarios? If you struggle to come up with a connection
you are satisfied with, or someone else beat you to it, you can choose to create an
analogy that can be used to teach or explain the Law of Conservation of mass to
others. (3 marks for participation, 2 marks for content)
