The FR Forage Cruiser.
The FR Forage Harvester is the best chopper on the market, and the Forage Cruiser series FR will only serve to
bolster that fact. New changes in MY2013 have brought about reliability and efficiency improvements, keeping
our customers in the field longer and with less downtime. Meanwhile, our engineers have been working hard
to introduce revisions to prepare the FR for it’s transition to Tier 4B. These alterations make for a cutting edge
product that is on the forefront of technical harvesting.

The goal of this document is to serve as a reference guide for the FR’s improvements as they relate to our
competitor’s offerings. The document will provide a basic introduction to the FR’s features and highlight the
major selling points as they compare to competitors. If you are looking for a more detailed look at the FR’s top
sales points, we recommend you review the Sales Information training guide provided in the document library.

When comparing the FR Forage Cruiser to it’s competitors, there are a few major points that cannot be disputed:

• Unlimited Throughput
The FR features the world’s largest feed channel for maximum crop throughput.
Ultra-wide feedrolls, cutterhead, accelerator and spout will keep your customer’s
crop moving no matter how high the yield.
• Legendary Chop Quality
Independent evaluations of the forage harvester market show that no one cuts crop with the
accuracy and precision of a New Holland. That precision is thanks to a well-designed conical
feed channel that provides smooth crop flow and accurate feeding no matter the conditions.
• Maneuverability and Turning
Despite it’s large dimensions, the FR Forage Cruiser is agile and mobile. The FR features 55°
of rear wheel movement for the tightest turning and the most accurate headland management.
Meanwhile the FR’s mechanical drivetrain never hesitates to deliver it’s full power potential no
matter the conditions. No getting bogged down in the mud with this monster.

The FR Forage Cruiser is truly a modern marvel, and we are excited to see all the harvesting your customers can
do once they get behind the wheel.

Crop Channel and Crop Flow: Overview
Think BIG!
When the FR was reinvented in 2007, New Holland
engineers looked to construct the most innovative
chopper in the world. In order to prepare for the
2119 rpm future of the forage harvesting, they dreamed Big.
The FR was designed with industry’s largest feed
channel, largest feedrolls, largest cutterhead, largest
30” Wide spout, and largest appetite. It was designed for 16
rows of corn and asked to deliver 12. So when you
30” Wide think FR, Think BIG.
34” Wide Power Saving Design
Smooth crop flow is key to an efficient forage
harvester. The more power that is used to throw the
crop, the less power that can be used to cut the crop.
Keeping this in mind, the FR was designed with a
steadily rising crop flow path. With the smoothest
1130 rpm flow path, the FR limits contact, producing higher
quality feed with lower horsepower demands. When
34” Wide compared to competitive designs, no other brand has
come close.

Conical Feed Channel

With the Forage Cruiser series FR, the already
outstanding chopper body has been improved. It uses
the same starting point, an ultra-wide crop channel with
unlimited capacity. But that is where the similarities end.
The frame has been redesigned to better direct crop
flow. The crop channel expands as the feed gets closer
to the cutterhead. This allows the feed more room Variflow System
to spread out for more consistent cutting length and In order to continue to pursue the best crop flow
better, more through processing. In addition to more possible, the FR adjusts its crop channel based
consistent crop flow, the redesign drastically reduces the on the crop that it is chopping. With the industry
accumulation of feed in the feed channel. This makes exclusive Variflow™ system, the FR can decrease the
the FR’s already simple-to-service feed channel even distance between cutterhead and accelerator by 8”
easier to maintain. (a 60% reduction). This reduces load on the system
by approx. 40hp while maintaining steady crop flow.

• Total feeding width is 28.7” (730mm) 20% less than NH
• Same crop flow path as previous Comfort Cut equipped Jaguar.
• Good crop flow through steady rise path.
• Deep knife pockets tend to carry over crop reducing efficiency.
• In grass applications, the cutterhead must throw crop 39 inches
to reach the accelerator increasing the chance of plugging.
• High HP units must force crop through narrow 30” cutterhead.
• Claas’s design condenses the crop mat, resulting in a thicker
crop mat and less consistent cut quality.

New Holland Advantage: - A wide crop opening and conical feeding

chamber mean the highest pressure applied to a thinner crop mat for the most
consistent cut quality in the industry.

• Two feeding channel widths: 30.7”(780mm) and 26”(660mm)

• 30.7” is only available on the 7750, 7780, 7950 & 7980
• Weak point in system is an 80° crop path change at
the accelerator increasing wear, slowing crop flow, and
demanding higher horsepower to throw the crop
• Large number of knives provide no centering
• In grass applications the cutterhead must throw crop nearly
38 inches to reach the accelerator
• Narrow path before the accelerator limits the crop to an 8”
opening, increasing the potential for plugging in grass crops

New Holland Advantage – The long flat crop channel and 80* turn create
serious plugging problems making dry hays a big challenge for the Deere

• Steadily rising crop flow path.

• Chevron drum helps center crop.
• In grass applications the cutterhead must throw crop nearly
35 inches to reach the accelerator.
• Weak point in the system is the accelerator area where the
crop path changes a dramatic 15°. Increases the wear and
horsepower requirement.
• VariStream: position of bottom plate of cutting drum and
accelerator door vary based on load creating inconsistent
crop flow.

New Holland Advantage – Krone’s unit is complicated and difficult to work

on. Access to key parts is limited.

• Uses NH’s outdated Metal Alert 2 system which leaves large
uncovered areas on the edges of the feedrolls (see bottom picture).
• Stone detector, Stop Rock (Optional)
• If detections occur, cutterhead is stopped using a brake
New Holland Advantage - Claas relies on a greater feedroll open for more
capacity, reducing pre-compression and increasing risk of metal intrusion. The
FR’s wider feedrolls allow for more capacity without sacrificing cut quality.

• Feedrolls are 3” narrower on wide-body and 8” narrower on

standard machine.
• Features infinitely variable cut lengths.
• LOC system uses a mechanical drive that is extremely
complex and very difficult to service. System limits access to
cutterhead and adds large amount of weight to front of axle.
• No RPM synchronization between the header and feedrolls
which can cause feed quality irregularity
• Difficult to open and service
• Metal detection has weaknesses in center and sides
(see bottom left photo)

New Holland Advantage – Deere’s large LOC gearbox is difficult to work on

and increases the time required to perform simple tasks such as changing headers

• Feedrolls and attachments are driven hydraulically.

• 6 Feedrolls measuring 31.5” wide, 4” narrower than NH.
• BigX’s slower system needs the longer feed channel to
respond to mental detections. The two additional feedrolls
means more moving parts, more wear, and more crop
damage.
• Cut quality is determined by the pre-pressure in the area
before the cutterhead not by the length of the crop channel.
• Complicated Hydrostatic drive system that controls upper
and lower rolls independently. Hydro motor is located
underneath unit: difficult to service and prone to damage.
• Optional “Rockprotect” stone detector available

New Holland Advantage – Less feedrolls and a simpler design.

• Requires 40 gallons of Hydraulic Oil.
• High weight of machine needs more hydraulic force to move
and maneuver.
• 25mph road speed is achieved with engine speed of 1660rpm.

New Holland Advantage – New Holland’s maneuverability, serviceability, and

visibility surpasses Krone by far delivering a better customer experience

Putting Power To Ground
New Holland believes strongly in a product that is built
tough. That is why on the Forage Cruiser, our drivetrains
are all mechanical. Real components putting real power to
the ground when you need it with no hesitation.
Mechanical 4WD
The 4WD option on the Forage Cruiser line is fully
mechanical- a New Holland exclusive- and very similar
in design to the one used on FWA tractors. It is powered
from the central gearbox by a drive shaft, and is engaged
via a hydraulic clutch from the cab. The highly efficient
mechanical system offers superior durability, lower
complexity, and better pulling performance when compared
to the hydrostatic assist systems used on other choppers.
The FR can power through even the harshest conditions
without risk of stalling or sticking.
Adjustable 2WD HD
Two-wheel drive FR units feature a heavy duty, adjustable
steering axle. The double box walled design offers stronger
more resilient alternative to the cylindrical axles used on
some competitors. Tread width can be set from 104” to
134” in 6” increments.
Results You Can See
The engine of the FR has been mounted in line with the
machine to allow lower mounting in-between the frame
Turn On A Dime rails. This placement provides excellent ballasting and easy
The rear wheels can turn up to 55°. This means a servicing. In addition, the placement allows the back of the
tight turning radius of only 20’ like the FX FR to slope down, enabling excellent visibility behind the unit.

SP FORAGE
Competitive Comparison .
• Wheel base is 9’, 10” 12% smaller than New Holland.
• Ground Clearance is 13.4”, 40% lower than New Holland.
• Engine sits higher reducing stability and decreasing visibility
to rear of machine.
• Two speed ground drive gearbox with 25mph max speed
• Hydraulically driven system.
• No differential lock available.
• Optional remote tire inflation available, $2,774 in 2013.

New Holland Advantage – New Holland has more drivetrain selections with
better stance and clearance for power in any conditions.

• Engine sits high in the chassis reducing stability .

• 2WD option is a fixed width hollowed out powered rear axle,
limits adjustability and increases weight.
• Two speed ground drive gearbox with 18mph max speed.
• Differential Lock, 12 mph harvesting speed, and 25 mph
road speed are only available with the optional ProDrive
transmission ($12,000 - $24,000 depending on model).
• Because of engine positioning and unit weight, Deere
requires heavy ballasting with even the smallest headers.
Results in added cost, reduced fuel economy, and instability
while harvesting.

New Holland Advantage – New Holland is significantly more stable.

Expensive options like ProDrive, Ballast, and Diff. Lock are standard on the FR.

• Transverse Engine Positioning.

• Hydrostatic transmission with hydrostatic motors powering
front wheels and the rear axle individually.
• Individually powered front wheels open up space that is
restricted on the FR. But the drive system is inefficient and
requires greater power to run, reducing fuel efficiency and
robbing power that could be used for traction or cutting .
• 15.3” Ground clearance, 30% smaller than the FR, especially
frustrating when trying to remove CP.
• No 2WD Option available
• No differential lock available.

New Holland Advantage – Complicated hydrostatic system on the Krone

drains power that would otherwise be used for chopping.

Claas 900 Series

While the Claas 900 series production ended some years ago, a great deal of those units still remain in the market
today. The 900 series proved long ago that it was a resilient unit and it is still proving that point. Still, despite it’s
resilience, many have begun to suffer from the tests of time. They have begun to fall behind their bigger meaner
successors in terms of chopping ability, processing and fuel economy. Some major weaknesses:
• Small engine size, New Holland has expanded it’s power to 824 horsepower.
• Engines have not been optimized, less fuel efficient.
• Crop processor has very limited capacity, well suited for past processing needs but not for today’s.
• Service access is limited, making maintenance difficult.
• Inefficient crop channel must throw crop 37” to accelerator, disrupts flow and reduces feed quality.

Fendt Katana
Since 2006, Agco has been developing a Forage Harvester to be launched under the Fendt brand name. At the
time this training was written, Agco had yet to release this product for US validation. But, the release of this
product to US consumers is expected in the not-so-distant future. Feedback on the unit has been lukewarm;
• Testing has demonstrated poor performance in grass type crops due to inconsistent air flow.
• The unit is very low to the ground, limiting ground clearance and tire choices.
• The unit also demonstrated a high amount of back feeding from the drum.
• High amount of crop accumulation.
