Ricoh is proud to introduce the next generation of
digital colour production printers. Pro C901 and
Pro C901S Graphics Arts Edition are new flagship
models. They combine phenomenal performance with
immaculate image quality. Based on our successful Pro
C900 and Pro C900S series printers, they are second
generation print engines which set new standards for
productivity, reliability and quality.
Pro C901 is a dedicated production printer. Pro C901S
is a production printer with integrated copying, scanning
and document archiving features. Both models deliver
immaculate 1200 dpi colour output at a speed of 90 A4
pages a minute. Both models can be configured with a
range of optional finishing systems which include high-
capacity stackers, punching systems, perfect and ring
binders, booklet makers, trimmers and folders.
The already impressive performance of the original
products has been significantly enhanced. Pro C901
series engines deliver images of higher quality onto a
wider range of media for longer periods of time. They
are so reliable that duty cycles have been extended by
45%. New inline finishing systems simplify production
processes and enhance productivity.
Wax-based toner and an oil-less fusing system deliver
enhanced image quality; paper support is extended
by the inclusion of a Ricoh media library and 300
gsm duplex; new operator replaceable units improve
serviceability and reduce downtime; new inline
finishing options and more powerful print servers
enhance productivity.
Designed to meet the most demanding requirements
of the graphics arts market and commercial print
markets (commercial printers, in-plant CRDs, Print-
for-Pay bureaus etc), the performance, handling and
output quality of the new engines are such that they
have been designated ‘Graphic Arts Edition’ products.
The ‘Graphic Arts Edition’ logo will feature on the
machine and on publicity material.

What are they and what do they do?

Ricoh’s Pro C901 and Pro C901S Graphic Arts Edition engines
are go-to solutions for intelligent colour production. Pro C901 is
a dedicated production printer. Pro C901S is a production printer/
scanner. They both deliver immaculate 1200 dpi colour output at
a speed of 90 A4 pages a minute. Designed for the graphic arts
market, they support an extensive range of media and can print
double sided onto 300 gsm stock at full engine speed.

What do they replace and why?

Pro C901 and Pro C901S are second generation print engines.
They replace the successful Pro C900 and Pro C900S, building
on the strengths of the original engines to deliver higher
quality output onto a wider range of media for longer periods
of time. The aim is to provide customers in the graphic arts
market with reliable solutions which deliver best-in-class
performance and quality.

The main improvements are:

How are they configured and what options are there?

Pro C901 is a colour production printer. Pro C901S is a colour production printer and copier. Although the engines
are based on the same print engine and share many of the same peripheral options, there is no upgrade path from
the Pro C901 to the Pro C901S. Print functionality is provided via one of three optional print servers. Pro C901S is
supplied with a 4000 sheet SRA3 LCT as standard. This unit is an option for Pro C901.

Pro C901 and Pro C901S Graphic Arts Edition are developments of Ricoh’s acclaimed and
successful Pro C900 seriess of which more than 2,000 were sold worldwide. The new engines
build on the strengths of their predecessors to set new standards for productivity, reliability
and quality. Impeccable image quality is delivered at speed. Non-stop performance is
underpinned with robust reliability. The new engines are easy to use, incredibly reliable and
effortlessly productive. New and enhanced features are described below:

Wax-Based Toner to produce consistent image quality throughout long

Image quality has been improved with the introduction
of an enhanced wax-based chemical PxPTM toner which
will meet the requirements of commercial printers
looking for digital output of similar appearance and
quality to offset. Characteristics of the new toner
include low granularity and smaller, more uniformly
sized toner particles. The new toner adheres well to
thick media and creates more sharply defined images
with a solid area fill.

damage and extends the drum life.
Enhanced Fusing Unit
A new fusing unit improves fusing on thick and
textured media. The new fusing unit employs a
thicker pressure roller than that used previously. The
pressure roller compresses more than the previous
roller on contact with the fuser. With a wider ‘belt
nip’, media is in contact with the fuser for a longer
period of time, resulting in better fusion. The new
unit also features a cleaning web which keeps the
surface of the pressure roller clean.

Ricoh Qualified Media Library
A Ricoh media library function has been incorporated in
the control panel of the Pro C901 series which simplifies
setup and increases the range of media that is supported.
Operators can now change media settings simply by
selecting a profile from the Ricoh media library. Ricoh
extensive media library contains automated settings for a
wide range of branded media and media types.
Simple to manage and operate, the user can set complex
printing jobs, applying settings by selecting a preset or
custom media type which will synchronise after each
update with the printer server media library on an Fiery
or Creo C-81 print server to provide advanced colour and
job management tools.
The Ricoh media library function simplifies setup
by significantly reducing the time taken to prepare
machines to print onto different media. It also reduces
waste as there is less likelihood of work being
committed to print with inappropriate media settings.

Durable Engine Design
Pro C901 series engines are targeted at document
volumes of between 70,000 and 350,000 pages a
month. A number of design modifications have been
made to the original print engine which improve
reliability and extend the target machine life. The effect
of these modifications is an increase of 45% in the
target duty cycle, monthly volume and lifetime capacity.
The new engines are capable of maintaining a maximum
document volume of 350,000 pages a month over a
five-year life and of meeting peak volumes (duty cycle)
of up to 580,000 pages a month. The lifetime capacity
has been increased from 14.4 million pages over five
years to 21 million pages over five years. Please note,
that when a machine runs to its duty cycle every month,
a five-year life cannot be achieved.
Air Separator
An air paper separator is offered as an option for the Pro
C901 series. This unit ensures reliable separation of
coated media and reduces the size of the leading edge
margin. With the air separator attached, the Pro C901
series engines will reliably feed light coated media of
weights between 60 and 160 gsm. The air separator
comprises two units. An air compressor unit is located
at the rear of the machine inside the outer cover. An
air nozzle unit is located at the exit of the fusing unit.
The units are connected by a hose. Compressed air is
omitted from the nozzle unit to ensure separation of
paper from the outer fuser roller.
300 gsm Duplex
The duplex path has been redesigned to support
heavier media weights. Pro C901 series support duplex
printing of media weights of up to 300 gsm - the same
weight as supported for simplex printing. The ability to
print double sided onto heavyweight media means that
Pro C901 series engines are even better suited than
their predecessors for applications such as printing
direct mail collateral, postcards and business cards.
Booklet Finisher and Trimmer
There is new booklet finisher and fore-edge trimmer
option for Pro C901 series. The booklet finisher,
which replaces the booklet finisher option for Pro
C900 and Pro C900S, is a heavy duty unit capable of
creating booklets of up to 20 sheets (80 pages). To
improve productivity when stapling in two positions,
the internal stacking buffer has been increased from 2
sheets to 5 sheets.
The fore-edge trimmer, available as an option for the
booklet finisher, allows booklet to be trimmed flat on
their opening edge to create a professional finish. In
addition, a punch unit, also available as an option for
the booklet finisher, runs at the full rated engine speed
to provide fast and highly accurate inline punching
of individual sheets. Please note, this unit punches
individual sheets as they are printed. It cannot be used
to punch compiled documents.

Feeding Options
The design of the 4000 sheet SRA3 Large Capacity
Tray has been improved to make it easier to change
media formats. Rather than completely remove retaining
screws and manually reposition the paper fence, the
operator now only needs to loosen knurled retaining
nuts and slide the side fence smoothly into its new
position.
The SRA3 LCT option features an air assisted paper feed
which ensures accurate front / back registration and
safeguards reliable feeding of media weights ranging
from 60 to 300gsm.
The design of the 4550 sheet A4 Large Capacity Tray
has also been improved. Easy grip handles are fitted
to the trays and the A4 LCT now features the same tray
lock mechanism as the SRA3 LCT. The new tray lock
mechanism allows the operator to open a tray using
less force than was required with the previous unit.

Operator Replaceable Units
Pro C900 and Pro C900S were the first Ricoh products
to feature operator replaceable units. Customers
buying the ORU option are trained to carry out routine
maintenance and emergency repairs by replacing
operator replaceable units. With no need to wait for a
service engineer, uptime is maximised.
To further maximise uptime for mission critical users,
Ricoh has introduced three new operator replaceable
parts, one of which is the Fusing Unit. All PM
(preventative maintenance) parts are now included in
the ORU kit. In addition, the firmware function of the
ORU is now set up during manufacture which means
that SD card installation is no longer required.
All operator replaceable parts can be replaced in
minutes, minimising downtime. Clear guidance is
provided throughout the process via the operation
panel and operators can seek assitance, if necessary,
from Ricoh’s telephone hotline and / or a Ricoh service
technician.

5. Configuration
Hardware Configuration

There are two products. Pro C901 is a colour production printer. Pro C901S is a colour production printer with
integrated scanner function. There is no upgrade path from Pro C901 to Pro C901S. If copy and scan functionality
is likely to be required, Pro C901S must be selected at the outset.

Neither machine is equipped with a print server as standard. This is because there are external EFI and Creo
print servers to choose from. It is necessary to select a print server as the machine will not function without this
essential ‘option’.

Pro C901 comes in the following standard configuration:

The Plockmatic bookletmaker system connects to the engine via the 3,000 sheet standard finisher (SR5000). It
cannot be attached directly to the mainframe or to the Ricoh professional booklet finisher (SR5020).

A GBC Stream Punch Pro, Z-folding unit, cover interposer and buffer pass can be attached in combination with
other finishing options. The Z-folding unit must be attached in combination with a 3,000 sheet standard finisher or
booklet finisher.

For a better understanding of configuation rules, sales people are advised to use the configurator tool in the Ricoh
Product Portal. The tool uses intuitive flash animation to show working configurations of equipment. To assist with
spacial planning, the tool also describes the dimensions of the configured engine. Configuration rules are also
covered in the machine and options EDP code list (overleaf).

Address Customer Requirements
Pro C900 and Pro C900S firmly established Ricoh as a
major player in the colour production market with 2000
installations worldwide. In satisfaction surveys, Pro
C900 and Pro C900S were rated highly by customers
who appreciate product strengths such as the ability to
print at high speed onto heavyweight media and achieve
accurate registration. The same surveys identified
opportunities for improvement which are addressed
with the launch of the Pro C901 series. By responding
to customer feedback, we have been able to strengthen
the product and expect to win new customers in the
graphics arts market.
Compete Effectively
Since the introduction of Pro C900 and Pro C900S,
competitors such as Xerox, Canon and Konica
Minolta have launched colour production printers that
compete with Ricoh. By introducing new products,
with enhanced specifications, we are able to compete
more effectively with our competitors. Pro C901 is, for
example, in the same price category as Konica Minolta’s
Pro 8000 but delivers much better productivity. Ricoh’s
new Pro C901 series offers customers a market leading
combination of quality, productivity and affordability.
Win New Accounts
Commercial printers face demand from their customers
for variable data print collateral that cannot be printed
quickly or economically on conventional offset presses.
As the market starts to recover from the effects of the
recession, commercial printers will look to digital print
as a means to meet their customers’ needs; shifting short
run and variable data print from offset presses to digital
presses. The Pro C901 series engines, which use wax-
based chemical PxPTM toner to deliver offset like print
quality and which print effortlessly onto a wide range of
coated and non coated media, are perfectly positioned to
meet customer needs.
Meet Higher Volume Print Needs
More durable than their predecessors, Pro C901 series
will meet the volume needs of more demanding customer
groups. The volume capacity of the new engines has
been increased by 45%. Capable of handling document
volumes of up to 350,000 impressions a month and with
a duty cycle of 580,000 impressions a month, the new
products are suitable for high volume users in the graphic
arts market such as commercial printers and pay-for-
print bureaus, as well high volume users in the corporate
environment such as CRD and and in-plant print centres.
Other improvements such as the introduction of Ricoh
media library support and more powerful print servers
will also appeal to customers with high print volumes.

Target 1: Commercial

The primary target for Pro C901 series is higher volume
customers printing between 100,000 and 350,000
impressions a month in the commercial and digital print
markets. According to market research agency Caslon,
this is by far the largest sector of the market, with an
estimated 110,000 sites worldwide - almost 3 times as
many sites as there are data centres and in-plant print
rooms. To date, only 40% of these sites have purchased
colour digital production printers, making this market one
with huge potential.
Pro C901 and Pro C901S Graphic Arts Edition engines
will be particularly attractive solutions to customers in
these markets. Capable of handling document volumes
of up to 350,000 impressions a month, and with a duty
cycle of 580,000 impressions a month, these engines can
easily meet higher volume needs. In addition, the ability
to print directly onto a wide range of coated media means
that these customers can more easily switch production
processes from offset to digital. The enhanced print
quality provided by using wax-based chemical PxPTM

toner and oil-less technology will enable pay for print
bureaus and commercial printers to meet customer needs
for short run, fast turnaround print collateral of offset
like quality. Powerful print servers from EFI and Creo
integrate easily with existing workflow solutions such as
Kodak Prinergy and Agfa Apogee.
Target 2: Corporate (CRD and In-Plant)
Another primary target for Pro C901 series is the
in-plant market. According to market research agency
Caslon, there are some 25,000 in-plant print rooms
and data centres worldwide. Many of these in-plant
operations are managed by facility management (FM)
companies. Growth is expected in this sector as
organisations seek to control production and reduce
print costs by bringing colour print in-house. Many
in-plant operations now extent their in-house service
to external customers, generating additional volume
and making profit from commerical work. Growth
is also being fuelled by an increase in the volume
of transactional data and of one-to-one marketing
materials such as personalised colour direct mail.
Target 3: Mid Volume In-Plant and Pay for Print
Print-for-pay bureaus with lower average document
volumes are also targets for Pro C901 series. Many
print-for-pay bureaus with lower document volumes use
multifunctional products rather than production printers.
They are however often required to produce collateral
for their customers at short notice and within tight
timeframes. Multifunctional products cannot easily meet
the speed of turnaround required or produce print of
offset like quality. Although their total document volume
may not be high, print-forpay bureaus do require fast,
high quality print solutions. Pro C901 and Pro C901S
Graphic Arts Edition engines offer greater speed and
durability than multifunational products, allowing print-
for-pay bureaus to react more quickly to their customers’
needs. They are compact and take up relatively little
space. Using the extensive Ricoh media library of the
Pro C901 series, print-for-pay bureaus can simplify
production processes and improve output quality by
printing easily onto a wide range of media.

Pro C901 series are perfect for in-plant print rooms

and data centres. More compact than most competitor
engines, they pack the speed and productivity to meet
high volume demand whilst taking up relatively little
space. Output print quality is superb and the engines
are able to handle thick media with ease. The powerful
print servers are easy to use, integrate seemlessly with
existing workflow solutions, and provide extensive
queue and job management tools. In addition,
Pro C901 series engines can be configured with a
variety of inline finishing options that automate print
processes and reduce labour requirements.

Mixed Colour and Mixed Media Printing
Early colour printers had a relatively slow print speed
and high cost per page. To maintain productivity and
reduce production costs, many CRD and print-for-pay
operations split work between monochrome and colour
printers, collating output later. Mixed media jobs would
also be split.
Pro C901 and Pro C901S Graphic Arts Edition engines
deliver outstanding productivity when printing in colour
and produce black and white output at a similar cost to
monochrome printers. With their extensive Ricoh media
library and ability to print double-sided at full engine
speed on to heavyweight media, they are also capable
of handling mixed media jobs with ease.
Pro C901 series can be used to target CRDs and
print-for-pay operations using separate colour and
monochrome print processes. By switching from separate
processes to mixed colour and mixed media production
using Pro C901 series engines, they can simplify the
print process, producing collateral that is pre-collated
and finished ready for mailing and distribution.

In-house Production
The difficult economic conditions mean that many
organisations are looking at operational costs. Some
companies are looking at the premium charged by
external printers and wondering whether it would be
more cost-effective to print brochures, magazines and
direct mail material in house. Many organisations that
already have in-plant print centres are looking to extend
their print services to external customers, generating
additional revenues which comensate for the operational
costs of the in-house facility.
Pro C901 series, with their low total cost of ownership, are
a good solution for companies bringing print production
in house. Pro C901 series engines lend themselves well to
in-house production. Featuring an intuitive user interface
similar to that of Ricoh’s office range, they are easy to
use and, when configured with finishing options such
as booklet makers and binders, can be used to produce
beautifully finished colour documents with minimal effort.
High image quality and wide paper support means that
in-house customers are able to produce documents of a
quality that matches those produced by external suppliers.
Offset to Digital Printing
Demand from end customers for personalised marketing
material and other short run collateral such as book
printing is increasing. Commercial printers are expected
to turnaround short run work quickly. Conventional
offset presses are not an economic solution for
short run work and, because offset print has to dry,
cannot match the speed of turnaround required. As a
consequence, commercial printers are now investing in
digital colour print solutions.
Speed isn’t compromised when printing onto
heavweight media or when printing double sided.
Highly productive, Pro C901 and Pro C901S Graphic
Arts Edition engines are capable of printing double
sided onto 300gsm media at their full engine speed
of 90 A4 pages a minute. Pro C901 series use wax-
based chemically produced PxPTM toner and oil less
fusing technology to deliver immaculate 1200 x 1200dpi
colour resolution. The new toner is designed to meet the
requirements of commercial printers requiring digital
output of the same quality and appearance as offset.
They will appeal to commercial printers as an alternative
to offset because of their ability to produce offset like
quality using wax-based chemical PxPTM toner. They can
moreover handle ‘standard’ offset media such as coated
SRA3 stock, enabling the commercial printer to replicate
both the look and feel of work produced on conventional
offset presses. The Pro C901 series can indeed handle
larger formats than SRA3, printing onto media of sizes up
to 330 mm x 487mm for full bleed A3 applications.
Upgrade Ineffective Digital Solutions
Commercial printers, quick printers and copy shops
were early adopters of digital colour print solutions.
Many of the older systems used by commercial printers
and pay-for-print bureaus are ineffective. Slow colour
output hampers productivity, print quality does not meet
customer expectations and the devices have limited
finishing capability. First generation colour printers
offer potential for upgrade.

Pro C901 series can be used to target and replace
older and less efficient digital colour solutions such
as the Xerox DC 240, 250 and 260 and Canon CLC
1000, 3000, 4000 and 5000. They can also be used
to upgrade light production devices such as the
Konica Minolta C6500 which slow when printing onto
heavyweight media and when printing double sided.
Pro C901 series offer heavy-weight specifications at
an affordable price. Enhanced features such as the
extensive Ricoh media library and offset like image
quality, resulting from the use of wax-based chemical
PxPTM toner and oil-less technology, will encourage
customers to replace older, less effective equipment.
Many Data Centres still use continuous form black-
and-white printers or spot colour printers to produce
transactional data. This equipment, whilst fast and cost
effective, is not capable of printing colour one-to-one
messages. Pro C901 series offer data centres the ability
to print at very high speed onto cut sheet media and add
high-quality variable data content in full colour, adding
value to their customer proposition. Data Centres will
appreciate the ability to print virtually non-stop at high
speed. State of the art Ricoh workflow solutions simplify
print management whilst powerful print servers from EFI
and Creo process large and complex print files with ease.

TransPromo Printing

Data Centres produce transactional print, such as

invoices and statements. This is a mature market and
data centre print volumes are declining as customers
move towards in-house production. To retain customers
and win new business, data centres are increasingly
looking to offer added value services to their customers
such as including colour one-to-one messages which
promote additional products and services within the
body of an invoice. Colour adds impact and appeal to
documents, driving up response rates and helping to
sell additional products and services.

9. First Customer Impressions
Pro C901S series engines were stress tested in customer production environments prior to launch. Customers were
uniformly impressed with the performance of the new engines, referencing speed, productivity, relability, media
handling, image quality and consistency as outstanding features. Their feedback is provided below.

Toine Deliën, Head of Prepress Drukkerij Gianotten BV

Established in 1918, the family-run Drukkerij Gianotten BV in Tilburg, The Netherlands, has 70 employees. It
produces general commercial business-to-business print on a two Heidelberg SM72s, a four and a five colour, a
Heidelberg SM52 four colour and two Heidelberg GTO’s. It also operates a Konica Minolta Bizhub 5610.

“ The speed, quality and the colour consistency of the C901 are excellent. Its quality
easily surpasses the digital press we’re currently running.

A big advantage for us is that there’s no drop in speed when you use different substrates.
We also like the comprehensive media library, and the fact the Ricoh C901 isn’t restricted
to running digital sheets. This means we can run offset grades on all our presses.

Many of the jobs we’d usually run on an offset press are now handled by the Ricoh
C901 Graphic Arts Edition, because it offers an equal choice of colour. We now have
the flexibility to move work easily from one press to another, and can produce far
smaller runs and offer affordable personalisation.

Ricoh Document Services – Dave Adams, Operations Manager

Ricoh Document Services is Ricoh’s UK print and imaging centre and supports all its FM sites across the country,
as well as managing Ricoh’s own print requirements.

“ The benefits we are seeing with the C901 are in improved performance and uptime.

The ability to automatically duplex 300gsm is a significant improvement. It also has

a uniform run rate across all media. We are printing solids consistently with clear
half tones. This means we are getting the quality and mix across media types to
meet our customer requirements. It is also tolerant with the many types of media
we use.

The C901 has performed from day one. The device has high reliability to date
needing no engineer calls.

10. Where Ricoh Production Colour Fits - Case Studies
Pro C900 series, the predecessor to the Pro C901 Graphic Arts Edition series, won critical acclaim from customers
in production print environments. The following case studies briefly describe how customers are using Ricoh
production printers and the benefits they gain from them. Full versions of the case studies are available in PDF
format via the Business Driver website and can be shared with potential customers.

Abbey Print: Cross-Press Calibration Delivers Digital Advantage

Abbey Print uses a Ricoh Pro C900s digital press to produce consistent, high quality colour print
collateral. The Ricoh device, which is calibrated to match the colour output from Abbey Print’s Komori
presses, is used for short run production work and as a proofing press.

The Ricoh device combines print and copy functionality - the

latter being important as it allows Abbey Print to meet walk-
up demand for copy services - and can print onto coated
heavyweight SRA3 stock, producing immaculate 1200 dpi
resolution output at a rate of 90 impressions a minute. To
ensure that print from the Ricoh digital press matched that of the
offset presses, Ricoh installed a colour management tool called
Ready4Print ColourServer. A profile was created for each Abbey
Print’s presses. Print output is validated against the target profile.
The solution eliminated the need to manage colour at the digital
front end of several different presses.

The Ricoh Pro C900s is used to great effect by Abbey Print.

The quality, speed and versatility of the Ricoh solution allows
Abbey Print to use digital print for a wid range of applications.
Paul Houghton, a director at Abbey Print explained: “The Ricoh
Pro C900s prints onto the same media as we run through our
offset presses. Colour output from the Pro C900s is superb;
indistinguishable from that produced on the Komori presses. We
use the Ricoh Pro C900s to print short run colour critical work
that would, in the past, have been printed at higher cost on an
offset litho press”.

Colour proofing was an unexpected bonus. According to Paul

Houghton, colour proofs produced on the Ricoh Pro C900s
are of “litho quality and 100% accurate”. Using the Ricoh Pro
C900s, Abbey Print is able to produce one-off print samples
which are stitched and trimmed to show the customer exactly
what the finished job will look like. The process is fast and
effective, and the proofing service is appreciated by customers.

Some customers use Abbey Print for bureau printing services.

The Ricoh solution is helping Abbey Print meet the needs of those
customers more efficiently too. Documents are often provided in
native formats such as Microsoft Word. Using resident imposition
software Abbey Print is able to produce smartly presented output
without having to open and manipulate the original document.

Evolution Print: High-Quality Digital Output on Offset Substrates

Evolution Print, winner of PrintWeek magazine’s Innovative Printer of the Year 2009 Award, uses a
Ricoh Pro C900 production printer. The Ricoh device is used to print high-quality sales and marketing
collateral on offset substrates.

Integrated into Evolution Print’s Prinergy workflow, the Pro C900

is managed in the same way as Evoltion Print’s other presses.
Prinergy software determines how to process, impose and output
files for automatic processing, routing PDF files and JDF job
tickets to the appropriate device. Running virtually non-stop -
toner and paper are replenished on the fly - the Pro C900 has
increased the speed at which digital print is produced, expanding
capacity at Evolution Print.

A key purchase criteria for Evolution Print was the need to produce
consistent high-grade colour output with excellent front-to-back
registration on standard offset substrates. Extensive testing proved
that the Ricoh device was capable of producing colour print of
exceptional quality. According to Evolution Print’s sales director,
Graham Congreve, “The quality of colour print produced by the
Ricoh Pro C900 was better than that of other devices tested. The
registration was perfect and Ricoh was able to provide profiled
settings for various offset substrates.”

The Ricoh print solution is having a positive impact on Evolution

Print’s sales turnover. Commercial manager Julie Rice explained
that the Ricoh device has given her the confidence to sell digital
print services, saying: “The quality of print onto offset stock is
exceptional. You would struggle to see a difference between print
produced on an offset press and that output from the Ricoh Pro
C900.” Graham Congreve added: “Customers are increasingly
look for a same day service. The Ricoh Pro C900 is helping us to
meet that need.”

Acquiring a Ricoh Pro C900 production printer has proved a wise

investment for Evolution Print. The machine is robust, reliable
and easy to use. Unlike conventional presses, the Ricoh Pro
C900 does not require a dedicated operator. According to Graham
Congreve, “We know how to impose print. Provided there is
paper in the Ricoh Pro C900, anyone can print to it.” The Ricoh
is left to run with minimum supervision, releasing staff for other
work. Ricoh’s remote management tool, @Remote, enables Ricoh
to provide fast and effective servicing which safeguard reliable
performance and maximises uptime.

Port of Rotterdam: Digital Workflow Streamlines In-house Production

Ricoh production printers and workflow software helped Port of Rotterdam take control of document
production; improving the management of promotional literature which is crucial to commercial
activities and reducing the organisation’s reliance on external printers.

Havenbedrijf Rotterdam NV - Port of Rotterdam - promotes its

commercial activities in print, using fact sheets and brochures
to communicate with existing and potential customers. Until
recently, much of the promotional literature was produced
externally. Outsourcing print production was expensive and the
organisation had little control over the supply of promotional
literature. Brochures were ordered in bulk and stored in a
warehouse, and when new printed material was required, there
would sometimes be production delays.

To gain control over the process, production was brought in-house.

Ricoh installed two Pro C900 colour production printers and a Pro
907EX monochrome production printer. The equipment, configured
with in-line binding and booklet making facilities, is supported with
web-to-print software. Incredibly fast, all three Ricoh production
printers operate at a speed of 90 pages a minute, providing a
combined print capacity of in excess of 16,000 pages an hour. The
Pro C900 colour production printers are hugely versatile and can
print in colour and/or black-and-white onto a wide variety of media,
including card and coated stock.

Using the Ricoh solution, Port of Rotterdam is able to produce

all print collateral in-house; improving the speed of turnaround,
eliminating stock of pre-printed material and reducing production
costs. The combination of high-speed printers, in-line finishing
equipment and digital production software provides a simple
automated workflow. Commenting on the equipment, Willem
Ponk, head of facilities services said: “The colour print quality is
up there with the very best. The Ricoh Pro C900 colour printers
produce stable, high quality colour output which meets ISO
graphic standards, allowing us to produce promotional material,
such as fact sheets and brochures, in-house”.

“Most print processes are automated. The high degree of

computerisation achieved with the web-to-print software helps
improve efficiency and reduce cost. Where staff used to pass
documents to us by hand, they now send print from their
workstations, using a digital order form which contains all the
information needed to process the job.” Leo Geelhoed, a senior
machine operator added: “The print finishing facilities are highly
effective and easy to use. Where we used to complete most
finishing processes by hand, using small machines, all folding

Our Best Press Yet High Speed Scanning

Pro C901 series are the most productive printers in
their class. Running at 90 A4 pages a minute, simplex
and duplex, they will produce 5,400 colour impressions
an hour irrespective of media weight. Some competitor
engines slow down when printing onto heavyweight
media and when printing double sided. Xerox’s 700
DCP (rated at 80 A4 ppm) and Konica Minolta’s bizhub
C6500 (rated at 65 A4 ppm) both slow down by around
30% when printing on thick media.
Full Speed Duplex
Pro C901 series are equipped with a trayless duplex
system which invert pages for double-sided printing
and copying. The duplex runs at full engine speed and
supports the same media formats and weights as when
printing single-sided (A5 to SRA3 / 60 to 300gsm).
Using Pro C901 series engines it is possible to print
double-sided at full engine speed onto heavyweight
offset substrates.
Pro C901S is equipped with a high-speed Automatic
Recycling Document Feeder (ARDF). This feeds
hardcopy originals to the platen glass one at a time
for scanning. Images are captured as pages pass over
a stationary scanner bar. The ARDF feeds up to 100
sheets at a time for scanning in black and white and full
colour at a speed of 75 images per minute.
Originals are fed face-up from the top of the stack. This
allows the system to count duplex originals while the
job is in progress, eliminating pre-counting tasks and
speeding job completion. If the system determines the
set contains an odd number of originals, the rear side of
the last page of a two-sided sheet is simply left blank.
With Batch Mode, users can exceed the 100-sheet
capacity to create longer documents, or alternate
between scanning originals off the glass and via the
ARDF to construct a document in page order.

Media Range Support
Pro C901 has a standard paper supply of 2,500 sheets
from 2 front-loading trays. The main tray is a tandem
tray holding 2 x 1000 sheets of A4. The tandem tray
can be replenished whilst the tray is in use for non-
stop continuous operation. The second stack is moved
across by the machine and used when the first stack
runs out.
The paper supply can be extended with the addition of
either an A4 LCT or one or two SRA3 LCTs and a 500
sheet multiple bypass tray. When configured with two
SRA3 LCTs and the multi-bypass, the Pro C901 Printer
can hold up to 11,000 sheets of paper on-line.
Pro C901S is supplied ready equipped with an SRA3 LCT
and has a standard capacity of 6,500 sheets. A second
SRA3 LCT and a 500 sheet multi bypass can be added
which increase the paper capacity to 11,000 sheets.
A3 DLT Tray
An optional A3 tray can be used to replace the 2 x 1000
sheet A4 tandem tray. This unit converts the top tray
to A3 format and increases the machine’s A3 capability.
This can be important in print environments where the
bulk of output is A3 or where work will be produced
two up and trimmed to A4 after production. When
configured with two SRA3 LCTs, a multi-bypass and the
A3 DLT tray, Pro C901 series boast a 10,000 sheet A3/
SRA3 capacity.
A4 4550 Sheet LCT
There is an A4 LCT option for the Pro C901. The A4 LCT
adds three A4 paper stations and is capable of holding an
additional 4,550 sheets of paper. If the A4 LCT is added
to the printer, the paper capacity is increased to 7,050
sheets, allowing long jobs to be completed without the
need to replenish media. The LCT can be used to feed
different media as well as tab stock. The A4 LCT supports
media weights of 60 to 216 gsm.
Please note, the A4 LCT cannot be attached to Pro C901S.
SRA3 4000 Sheet LCT
Pro C901 and Pro C901S Graphic Arts Edition engines
can be configured with one or two SRA3 LCTs. Capable
of handling a wider range of media formats and weights
than the A4 LCT, each SRA3 LCT holds 4,000 sheets of
paper of sizes between A5 and SRA3 and weights of 60
to 300 gsm. With two SRA3 LCTs and a multi by-pass
attached, the total paper capacity of the Pro C901 series
can be increased to 11,000 sheets.
Please note, the Pro C901S comes with one SRA3 LCT
fitted as standard. A second SRA3 LCT can be added as
an option. The Pro C901 printer does not ship with an
LCT. One or two SRA3 LCTs can be added as options
or one A4 LCT. It is not possible to add an A4 LCT and
an SRA3 LCT at the same time. A bridge unit is required
when attaching a second SRA3 LCT.
500 Sheet Multi-Bypass
An optional Multi-Bypass tray can be installed on
top of the SRA3 4000 sheet LCT option to provide an
additional media source. It has a 500 sheet capacity and
can be used to feed special stock such as envelopes,
overhead transparencies, labels, letterhead and
postcards. It allows the operator to print short run work
which requires special media without need to change
tray settings, speeding job completion.
Non-Stop Productivity
Toner and media can be replenished on the fly without
interrupting print production. Pro C901 series have
top mounted toner hoppers which feed a sub hopper
unit inside the machine. The main toner hopper can be
opened and toner bottles replaced whilst the machine
is printing. After removing a toner bottle, each sub
hopper still holds sufficient toner for approximately
2,500 pages (A4, 5% coverage). Media can also be
replenished without interrupting production as paper
trays which are not in use, can be opened and refilled
whilst the machine is running.

Offset-like Print Output
Pro C901 series use wax-based chemically produced
PxPTM toner and oil less fusing technology to deliver
immaculate 1200 x 1200dpi colour resolution. The new
toner is designed to meet the requirements of commercial
printers requiring digital output of the same quality and
appearance as offset. The characteristics of the toner
include low granularity and smaller, more uniformly
shaped toner particles of less than 5 micron diameter
which produce a sharper and more clearly defined dot
shape. The new toner adheres well to thick paper and
creates more sharply defined images with a solid area fill.
Advanced Stabilisation OPC Drum
Ricoh has developed a new OPC drum which delivers a
more stable electronic charge. Working in conjunction
with the new toner, it enables Pro C 901 and Pro C901S
to produce more consistent image quality throughout
long print runs. The drum is coated with a durable
overcoat layer which protects the charge transport layer
from damage and extends the drum life.

Trickle Development
The toner cartridge contains pre-mixed toner and
developer. The pre-mix toner is injected into the
mainframe’s development unit where it is rotated and
mixed evenly with more developer. This process, which
is known as trickle developing, prevents reduction in
image density on long run work and / or production of
images with high page coverage.
Engine Management and Scanning
Pro C901 series are equipped with GW controllers.
Whilst the GW controller does not provide print
functionality (this is provided by external EFI Fiery and
Creo print servers), the GW controller does manage
engine functions and provide scanning and document
server functionality. The controller features a Pentium M
1.4 GHz processor, 1GB RAM and a massive 640GB of
drive space, and has a standard 10/100BaseTX Ethernet
interface.
Document Server
The GW controller’s 640GB hard drive is shared by
several functions. It is used, for example, to store
address book information and facilitate security related
functions such as Stored Print and Locked Print. In
a copy environment it also enables the operator to
build complex jobs with a high page count. 410GB of
memory is reserved for document server functionality.
This space can be used to store up to 3,000 documents
or 12,000 pages for print-on-demand convenience.
EFI Fiery E-41 and E-81 Print Servers
Fiery Print Servers are the de facto choice in many
professional print environments. Fiery print servers
provide close control over job queues, precise colour
management, and through optional utilities, the means
to impose print into multiple formats. Many customers
in the production environment already use Fiery Print
Servers with other production devices.
The embedded Fiery print server available with Pro
C900 series has been replaced with a choice of
external Fiery print servers. The EFI Fiery E-41 is the
standard print server for Pro C901 series whilst the
EFI Fiery E-81 is offered as a more powerful solution
for production environments. The Fiery print servers,
which are FACI enabled, can be configured with a
furniture option which includes an LCD display,
keyboard and mouse. The external Fiery system,
configured with the furniture option, can be located
beside the printer, making the system easier to use.
EFI Fiery E-41 Print Server
The EFI Fiery E-41 print server is the standard Fiery
print server for Pro C901 series. The print server
utilises a fast Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 GHz
processor and connects via a gigabit ethernet interface.
The system supports Fiery’s System 9 Release 2
software, an updated version of the System 8 Release 2
software used with Pro C900 series.
Fiery’s Command WorkStation 5, SeeQuence Impose
and Graphics Arts utilities are bundled with the EFI
Fiery E-41 print server. Fiery’s SeeQuence Compose,
Graphic Arts premium, FACI Furniture and Colour
Profiling Suite are available as options. The Fiery E-41
print server is equipped with Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0
GHz CPU, 2GB Memory & 160GB HDD. Although this
specification is sufficient to realise the high-speed data
processing needs of many digital production users, heavy

EFI Fiery E-81 Print Server

challenging demands of the high-end digital production
market more effectively. The print server is a genuine Fiery
Print Server, equipped with 2 x Intel Core Xeon X5560,
4GB Ram memory, 500GB (for data) x 2 + 250GB (for OS)

Creo C-81 Colour Print Server

The Creo C-81 color server is the top-end print server
for Pro C901 series. The print server features a super

commercial, the Creo C-81 color server features an
Adobe PDF Print Engine (APPE) which renders PDF

This feature produces smoother gradients or
vignettes that are created using Postscript/PDF

both Postscript and PDF and with CPSI and APPE.
RIP While Receiving
When RIP While Receive is enabled, a print job will
begin processing while spooling as soon as the RIP
is idle. Otherwise the print job will begin processing
only after it has completed spooling.
250 Spot Colors
The Fiery CPSI can processes up to 250 spot colors
(including C, M, Y, K) per page when Composite
Overprint is enabled.
Embedded Profile Override
CMYK or RGB source profiles embedded in a
document can be used by the job.
Pure Primaries
Pure Primaries is a new value for the CMYK Simulation
Method that replaces the older value Quick. It is an
improved CMYK color correction method that, like
Quick, preserves GCR and keeps saturated colors pure,
but is more color accurate in hue.
Maximum Printer Density
This feature enables the operator to use the
maximum CMYK density of the print engine in a
smooth way without any jumps in print intensity.
Fiery JDF
This provides functionality (on the Fiery) and user
interface elements (In EFI Command WorkStation)
needed to integrate the Fiery in JDF workflows. This
enables bi-directional JDF device connectivity between
JDF submission tools submitting JDF process job
tickets via JMF (JDF’s Job Messaging Format) and the
Fiery. This module also integrates the Fiery with EFI
Digital StoreFont web to print workflows.
APPE
Adobe’s new PDF based rip, Adobe PDF Print
Engine (APPE) enables direct PDF ripping without
conversion to Postscript, avoiding potential
errors for PDF files that contain transparency. The
previously existing CPSI rip is still available for PS
workflows and can continue to be used for PDF, or
PDF files can be intelligently routed to APPE for
processing based on the user’s preference.
EFI Simplifies Tasks
EFI Command WorkStation has an intuitive WYSIWIG
interface which simplifies tasks, regardless of
the operator’s skill level. EFI SeeQuence Impose
streamlines and automates the imposition process. EFI
SeeQuence Compose provides centralized assembly,
WYSIWYG page-level ticketing, preview and editing
feature. EFI SeeQuence Impose and EFI Sequence
Compose launch from Command WorkStation 5

Built to Run Long Service Interval

Reliable performance is a must in production
environments. Downtime affects productivity and can
prove expensive. Pro C901 and Pro C901S Graphic
arts Edition engines are built to last. A number of
design modifications have been made to the original
print engine which improve reliability and extend the
targeted machine life. The effect of these modifications
is an increase of 45% in the target duty cycle, monthly
volume capability and lifetime capacity.
The rugged design, together with a high yield OPC
drum – it has target yield of 2.4 million impressions
- means that the machine is able to produce a high
volume of output before needing service. The target
MCBC (mean copies between calls) is 110,000 pages.
This figure includes scheduled service visits for
preventative maintenance as well as unscheduled calls
for breakdown repair.

The engine is designed to produce 21 million

impressions over a 5 year life which equates to a
maximum monthly volume 350,000 pages. Pro C901
series are targeted at customers producing average
document volumes of between 70,000 and 350,000
pages a month. A duty cycle of 580,000 pages means
that the machine can reliably handle much larger peak
volumes but would need replacement earlier if the
maximum monthly volume was regularly exceeded.

Operator Replaceable Units
Pro C901 series have modular quick-change service
units. To safeguard reliable performance and maintain
consistent image quality, trained operators equipped with
Operator Replaceable Units are able to replace key service
units. Operator Replaceable Units (ORUs) are available as
an optional kit for Pro C901 series engines.
The kit contains a special service tool as well as the
necessary modular service units. Comprehensive on
site training is provided to ensure that the operator
understands basic service techniques and is capable of
replacing the modular service units.
The ORU strategy was developed by Ricoh’s service
organisation as a means to maximise uptime and improve
productivity by reducing downtime and delays associated
with servicing. Service parts typically have much shorter
lifecycles than the engine itself and need replacement
on a regular basis. With a trained operator able to replace
service parts there is no need to wait for a service engineer.
The control panel of the production printer alerts the
operator when an ORU needs replacement and the unit can
be simply exchanged when it is convenient for the machine
to be off-line. The ORU tool, colour matched to the operator
replaceable parts, provides access to areas of the machine
which the operator has been trained to maintain.

The ORU kit for The Pro C901 series includes transfer
and feed rollers, a transfer belt, photoconductor drums,
developer, charger units, drum and belt cleaning units,
dust and ozone filters, image transfer unit and a fusing unit.
Exchanging a modular service unit takes very little time.
A photoconductor drum which might, for example, need
replacing at 2,500,000 impressions can be exchanged in
less than ten minutes.
Having removed locking screws and covers, most of the
operator replaceable units slide out of the machine for easy
replacement. Used parts are retained for refurbishment
or replacement by a Ricoh service engineer. With most
operator replaceable units replaced in minutes, a trained
operator can provide fast and effective first-line service
which significantly increases production uptime.
Clear guidance is provided throughout the process
via the operation panel. Should a trained operator need
assistance, helpdesk operatives are able to talk them
through the exchange process. In the unlikely event that a
trained operator cannot easily resolve a problem with the
machine, a service engineer can be quickly dispatched to
assist.
Customers using Operator Replaceable Units benefit
from an average 20% reduction in downtime related
to emergency calls and a 60% reduction in downtime
related to routine maintenance.

Ricoh Professional Booklet Finisher (SR5020) Ricoh Staple Finisher (SR5000)

There are new booklet finisher and trimmer options
for Pro C901 series. The Ricoh Professional Booklet
Finisher (SR5020) is a heavy duty multi-purpose
finisher. It can be used to create saddle stitched
booklets of up to 20 sheets (80 pages) and to staple and
stack flat sets of up to 100 sheets. It will handle coated
and non coated media of weights of up to 216 gsm.
The unit features separate staple and folding units to
maximise the number of sheets that can be incorporated
in a booklet. To improve productivity when stapling,
the internal stacking buffer has been increased from 2
sheets to 5 sheets. This unit can be used in conjunction
with the Z fold unit and the optional booklet trimmer.
The SR5000 brings production-level finishing to high
volume environments with 3,000 sheet capacity for long
periods of unattended operation. The finisher has two
delivery positions; a 500 sheet proof tray delivers loose
material for easy collection, whilst the 3,000 sheet shift
tray delivers finished documents sets.
The finisher has a fully integrated jogger which installs
on top of the Shift Tray and gently taps collated sets
into perfect alignment prior to stapling for a flush
edge. A new triple pre-stack design improves stapling
productivity to 100%. 100 sheet per set stapling
capacity allows thick documents to be professionally
finished. Multiple staple positions enable proper
binding of documents in all paper sizes/orientations.

The system temporarily stops printing when the

3,000 sheet shift tray capacity is reached and restarts
automatically when emptied. The shift tray offset stacks
document sets that are not stapled for easier separation.

2 / 4 Hole Punch

Fore-Edge Trimmer (TR5020) for SR5020

The fore edge booklet trimmer, available as an option

for the Ricoh professional booklet finisher SR5020,
allows booklets to be trimmed flat on their fore-edge
(opening edge) to create a professional finish. In
addition, a punch unit, available as an option for the
booklet finisher, runs at the full rated engine speed
to provide high speed inline punching with improved
registration accuracy. An option for the SR5000 finisher, the hole punch
provides full-speed on-line punching of documents

in either 2 or 4 hole format. The user selects which
hole format is required through the print driver or at
the touch panel. The system saves the user manually
punching documents after production or using more
expensive pre-punched paper.
Ring Binder (RB5000)
Perfect Binder (GB5000)
The GB5000 Perfect Binder produces professional
quality booklets with strong, glued backs. The GB5000
is exceptional in that it will accept oversized paper for
body pages. Capacity is up to 200 sheets per book and
the cover inserter supports paper up to 300 gsm. The
automatic trimming function trims the three opening
edges for a smart professional finish. The GB5000

Tedious and time-consuming manual finishing of  Book sizes from A4 to A5

ring-bound sets is a thing of the past. Pro C901
series are the only colour production engines to offer
fully automated inline ring binding. The innovative
technology drastically cuts down the traditional
workload of producing finished documents. Configured
with the RB5000 Ring Binder which sits between the
machine and the SR5000 finisher, Pro C901 series can
punch and ring-bind books of up to 100 A4 sheets /
200 pages. For that extra professional touch, rings are
available in two sizes and in two colours (black and
white).

Dual Tray Cover Inserter
A dual tray cover inserter can be installed between the
mainframe and finisher. This option allows users to
insert pre-printed sheets such as glossy litho printed
covers into live job streams for collation and finishing.
Dual trays allows for different covers to be placed on
the front and back of each set. The interposer has a dual
200 sheet capacity and will feed paper sizes of up to
SRA3 and paper weights of up to 216g/m2.
Inserting pre printed sheets after the body of the
document has been produced preserves image quality by
ensuring pre-printed pages are not exposed to the heat
of the fusing section. This is particulalry useful when
adding pre-finished cover pages which are laminated or
have a UV varnish. Users can take advantage of other
finishing modes while adding pre printed covers and
inserts for a completely finished document.
Z Fold Option
Another finishing option that can be installed between
the mainframe and the finisher, the Z fold unit will fold
large documents for filing and mailing material for easy
insertion into envelopes. It accepts all media sizes
and weights supported by the mainframe. It eliminates
manual folding and collation and speeds production of
jobs with multiple page formats.
GBC Stream Punch PRO
The GBC Stream Punch PRO option provides full speed
in-line punching in a variety of professional punch
formats. This unit saves time being wasted on post
production drilling or the purchase of expensive pre-
punched stock.
The unit runs at the full rated engine speed and can
punch coated and non coated media of weights of up
to 216 gsm. Each sheet is individually punched. The
punch unit is fully integrated and can be operated
directly from the touch panel display or printer driver.
Pre printed covers fed from the interposer can also be
punched in-line using the GBC Stream Punch PRO. Die
sets are interchanged without special tools or levers to
produce professionally finished manuals and guides
with precise hole alignment for sets with pages that are
easy to turn.

independently of them. Saddle stitch booklets created
with the booklet finisher cannot, for example, be
punched using the GBC Stream Punch PRO.

High Capacity Stackers
One or two stacker units can be attached to the Pro
C901 series. Each stacker unit has capacity to receive
and hold up to 5,000 sheets. Another 250 sheets can
also be delivered to the stacker’s proof tray. With two
units attached, 10,250 pages can be printed in a single
run ready for collection (only one proof tray can be
used in tandem operation). Each stacker unit comes
with a roll-away cart which makes it easy to remove
large stacks of printed material ready for distribution.
Additional roll-away carts are available as an option.
Please note: it is not be possible to install two high
capacity stackers in all configurations. Please see the

Plockmatic Booklet Maker (BK5010e)
The Plockmatic booklet maker BK5010e and its
associated options is an on-line / off-line finishing
system that attaches to the SR5000 finisher. The
BK5010e produces professionally finished booklets
at full engine speed. The system brings professional
quality finishing to all high volume environments.
Using this system, users can easily produce booklets of

up to 30 sheets (120 pages) on various paper sizes with
a conventional magazine fold or a square-back fold.
The booklet maker can handle media sizes of up 320 x
457mm and media weights of up to 300 gsm and will
produce upto 1800 booklets an hour.
The Plockmatic Booklet Maker BK5010e comprises
a Booklet Maker and Belt Stacker. Options include a
Cover Feeder (CF5010e), Book Folder (BF5010e), fore-
edge Trimer Unit (TR5010er) and a fore and side-edge
Trimmer Unit (ST5010e).
Plockmatic Finishing Options
The optional Cover Feeder (CF5010e) is used to
feed special media such pre-printed, laminated or
embossed covers which are added to the document
set after printing. The cover feeder can hold up to 200
sheets (80gsm) and will feed the same media sizes and
weights as the booklet maker.
The optional Book Folder (BF5010e) creates booklets
with a square-back spine. The advantage of a
square-back spine is that it can be indexed for easy
identification on the shelf and allows the booklet to lay
flat when opened.
The optional 2-Side Trimmer Unit (ST5010er), which
installs inside the Book Folder, trims the top and bottom
edges of booklets for a professional finish. It can be
used in conjunction with the fore-edge trimmer (below).
The optional Fore-Edge Trimmer Unit (TR5010e) is used
to trim up to 16mm off the fore-edge (opening edge) of
booklets to remove the stepped effect that appears on
thicker booklets for a neatly finished edge.
The Plockmatic system eliminates the need for manual
finishing and adds value to finished booklets.

Easy-Access Operation Panel
Pro C901 series engines have a new easy-access
operation panel with a 10.4” colour LCD touch-
screen. The keys on the operation panel have been
re-positioned so that common features are accessed
via buttons that are grouped by function category.
Improvements to the control panel result in improved
operability, easier job programming and faster fault
diagnosis.
Tilt to View
The operation panel can be tilted up and down or
angled from side to side to give operators and easy
view regardless of their working position. If necessary,
the panel's arm can also be extended forward by a
service engineer adding more flexibility for operators.
The tilting panel allows the operator to view the panel
whether they are standing, sitting or conducting
maintenance on the machine.
Simplified Menu
A simplified menu is available for easy operation
by casual operators whilst more complex functions
and features are available to key operators. Animated
guidance helps operators deal with simple maintenance
tasks like toner replenishment and clearance of
misfeeds. The control panel also provides guidance to
trained operators replacing modular service parts.
Thumbnail Preview
Operators can select a regular screen or preview mode
to check scanned data on the operation panel before
sending it to e-mail or storing it in the document
server. In the regular screen documents are presented
as thumbnails. In preview mode document images are
seen in a larger format with the ability to zoom in and
zoom out to view discrete parts of scanned documents.

Pro C901 series engines take up less space than some

competitor machines, enabling customers to make
better use of available space. The main print engine of
Pro C901 is just 1.25m wide and takes up less than half
the space of Xerox's DC 8002 which is 2.54m wide.

toner for 63,000 prints (A4, 8.75% coverage) / 74,000
(A4, 5% coverage), little time is wasted replenishing
toner. Toner bottles have easy to hold oval knobs
which make it easy for operators to remove empty toner
bottles. The toner hopper is positioned at the top of the
machine within easy reach of the operator. Toner can be
replenished without interrupting production as toner is
siphoned from the toner bottle to a sub hopper inside
the mainframe.

Pro C901 series engines are capable of printing on to
heavyweight media of up to 300 gsm. Enhancements
to the duplex system enable Pro C901 series to print
double sided onto media weights of 60 to 300 gsm,
the same range of media weights as supported for
simplex printing. The ability to print double sided onto
heavyweight media means that Pro C901 series engines
are well suited for applications such as direct mail,
postcard and business card printing.
Improved Fusing on Thick Media
A new fusing unit improves fusing on thick and textured
media, enabling Pro C901 series to print at full engine
speed on heavyweight stock. The enhanced fusing
unit employs a thicker pressure roller than that used
previously. The pressure roller compresses more than
the previous roller on contact with the fuser. With a
wider ‘belt nip’, media is in contact with the fuser for a
longer period of time, resulting in better fusion.
In addition, Pro C901 series fuses at variable
temperature settings to reduce paper stress. 60 gsm
media is, for example, fused at 125 dgrees and 300 gsm
media at 185 degrees. By compariosn, Pro c900 series
fuses all media, irrespective of weight, at 205 degress.
SRA3 Media Support
SRA3 media is widely used by commercial printers as it
provides scope for full bleed printing of A3 documents.
Pro C901 series support media formats ranging from
A5 to SRA3. This feature, together with the ability to
print on to coated offset substrates, means that Pro
C901 series can be used by commercial printers to print
onto the same stock as used in their offset presses.
Reliable Separation of Coated Media
An air paper separator is offered as an option for the
Pro C901 series. This unit ensures reliable separation
of coated media. With the air separator attached, Pro
C901 and Proc C901S will reliably feed coated media
of weights between 60 and 300 gsm. This option also
reduces the size of the leading edge from 5 mm to 4
mm, enabling better page coverage.

Pro C901 series engines should be maintained by
a trained service engineer. Like other Ricoh color
devices, service is likely to be offered on a toner
inclusive click basis. Although the running costs of the
Pro C901 series are similar to those of the Pro C900
and Pro C900S, sales people must refer to their service
or sales management for actual service pricing.
The Pro C901 series feature modular quick-change service
units. To safeguard reliable performance and maintain
consistent image quality, trained operators equipped with
Operator Replaceable Units are able to replace key service
units. Operator Replaceable Units (ORUs) are available as
an optional kit for the Pro C901 series. Comprehensive
on-site training is provided to ensure that the operator
understands basic service techniques and is capable of
replacing the modular service units.
The ORU kit includes transfer and feed rollers, a transfer
belt, photoconductor drums, developer, charger units,
drum and belt cleaning units, dust and ozone filters, image
transfer unit and a fusing unit. Used parts are retained for
refurbishment or replacement by a Ricoh service engineer.
With most operator replaceable units replaced in minutes,
a trained operator can provide fast and effective first-line
service which significantly increases production uptime.
Customers using Operator Replaceable Units benefit
from an average 20% reduction in downtime related
to emergency calls and a 60% reduction in downtime
related to routine maintenance.
Please note, Operator Replaceable Units are mandatory
for commercial print customers (commercial printers,
print-for-pay bureaus, direct mail houses etc).
