According to the 2015 consensus, the population of the Philippines amounts to 100,981,437. Throughout the year 2018, the
population count will continue to increase and is expected to reach around 107,190,081 by December 31, 2018 according to
Commission on Population. Overpopulation is a contributing factor to poverty and Philippines currently has to solve both of these
problems.
Among the causes of overpopulation are teenage pregnancy and premarital sex. Teenage pregnancy is defined as pregnancy in
females under the age of 20. Teenage pregnancy is connected to premarital sex which is sexual activity practiced by people
before they are married. Teenage pregnancy is a problem of countries all over the world, whether it’s a highly prospered country
or not, it is still a problem that can’t be solved.
Premarital sex rates are high in the Philippines, as a matter of fact, according to Philippine Statistics Authority, over a third of
Filipinos aged 15 to 24 have engaged in premarital sex, and a majority of them do not use any form of protection, this contributes
greatly to the rates of teenage pregnancy in our country.
Teenage pregnancy rates go higher every year, in the case of Philippines, the country doesn’t have enough facilities and enough
access to information about this topic, therefore this may hinder the youth in becoming aware of the topic and this may cause
teenage pregnancy. Teenagers with no knowledge about teenage pregnancy doesn’t know the risks involving teenage
pregnancy so this results to lack of readiness in terms of financial and medical needs since they don’t know about the risks they
are putting the child and the mother into. Other countries all over the world have sexual health education in their school
curriculum which talks about the risks of teenage pregnancy and how they can avoid it, this lesson also encourages them to not
engage in premarital sex. Because of the fact that Philippines doesn’t have this in the school curriculums, students are deprived
of knowledge about teenage pregnancy and premarital sex.
According to the 2013 National Demographic and Health Survey, One in ten young Filipino women age 15-19 has begun
childbearing: 8 percent are already mothers and another 2 percent are pregnant with their first child. High rates of teenage
pregnancy is a tremendous problem in a society because the mother and the child may suffer health problems and this may
cause the mother to be unable to provide for her child.

Both teenage pregnancy and premarital sex pose a big threat to the country which is why it is important that we acknowledge
these problems and work to search for a solution. It doesn’t only affect the country but also the family because they are the
people who will mostly suffer from this.
There are multiple risks involving teenage pregnancy, for example is the medical problems concerning the child and the mother.
There are many factors affecting the health of the mother and the baby and if these are not met and they don’t get proper care,
this may result to premature birth, high blood pressure and low birth weight baby.
There are also financial problems concerning teenage pregnancy, since the mother and the child now has to be supported,
employment is essential to be able to provide for the family. In most cases of teenage pregnancy, the parents of the teenagers
don’t support them and this may cause great financial problems. Money is very vital in this situation since without it, it would
cause health problems for the child and mother. Financial resources are needed in order to provide comfortable environment,
postnatal care for the mother, food and things for the baby like diapers and baby clothes.
The mother also has to be properly taken care of and needs to have all the needed nutrition during the pregnancy. Proper
nutrition is needed to ensure that the baby will live a healthy life and that there would be no complications concerning the birth of
the baby. Among that, the child needs to live in a hygienic and comfortable living conditions since this affects the health of the
baby. If the baby lives in an unclean environment and isn’t comfortable, he/she will possibly get diseases from living in that kind
of environment and this will cause financial problems as well.
At the beginning of puberty, teenagers start to develop curiosities and attraction to the opposite sex which is why there are still
very high rates of premarital sex even though the number of risks involving this act is high. In the past, premarital sex was
forbidden and you would be faced with heavy punishment if you engage in it, but as society evolves and new perspectives arise,
people started to welcome premarital sex and considered it normal. Teenagers nowadays engage in premarital sex in countries
all over the world. Because of the lack of knowledge about the consequences of premarital sex, some of these teenagers suffer
the consequences, for example are sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies.
Sexually transmitted diseases have greater chances of being passed to different people when it comes to premarital sex. Since
sexually transmitted diseases are often passed when a person has sexual intercourse with more than one person, and the
chances of that are greater in premarital sex.
Premarital sex may take place in a number of situations. For example, it may take place as casual sex, for example, with at least
one participant seeking to experience sex; it may take place between a couple living together in a long-term relationship without
marriage; for a betrothed couple engaging in sexual activity before their anticipated marriage; and many other situations are
possible.
Teenagers often express regrets over the fact that they have engaged in premarital sex and wished that they have waited longer.
The significantly lower levels of happiness and higher levels of depression among sexually active teens suggest that sexual
activity leads to a decrease in happiness and well-being among many, if not most, teenagers. This conclusion is corroborated by
the fact that the majority of sexually active teens express reservations and concerns about their personal sexual activity.
According to the data showed by the Philippine Statistics Authority, 35.5 percent of young male Filipinos and 28.7 percent of
young females have engaged in premarital sex. 83.8 percent of young women and 73.4 percent of young men did not use any
form of protection during their first premarital sex.

PURPOSE: This aims to decrease the rates of teenage pregnancy by holding seminars for parents and students so that they
may be informed about
DESCRIPTION: This concept paper aims to reach out to several barangays in Cabanatuan City. We will be conducting seminars
about the risks of teenage pregnancy and how we can avoid it. We will be selecting different barangays scattered around the
cities, we will be choosing from highly prospered areas that are closer to the city and barangays that are less fortunate and are
far from the city. This is to ensure that we will spread information fairly. This will benefit the parents to make sure to check on
their children and monitor whether they are having premarital sex.
We will also go to different schools in Cabanatuan City for seminars and film viewing about the dangers of teenage pregnancy.
We also want to suggest the addition of sexual education to the curriculum of grades 4-6 and all levels of high school and senior
high school. This is to make sure that they are informed about their sexual health and how they can protect themselves from
teenage pregnancy like using contraceptives and how they can avoid sexually transmitted diseases.
Film viewing is another activity that will be held where the students will watch a documentary or a film about the dangers of
teenage pregnancy and how this can affect a person. Upon learning the dangers of having premarital sex and teenage
pregnancy, students who previously had no knowledge will now know why they should avoid engaging in premarital sex.
We will conduct this starting from second week of October to second week of December. This is because December is AIDS
Awareness Month. Nakalimutan ko yung sinabi ni ange hehe basta may reason kung bakit October
