ABSTRACT
The study aims to know the impression of selected Mathematics 6 students on KooBits
ProblemSums e-Learning Platform. Also, this study seeks other related information specifically
the challenges and suggestions that would help in improving the said platform in the future. The
core of KooBits ProblemSums e-Learning Platform is built with Singapore Math model method,
which is highly recommended by educators worldwide. To complete the objective of this study,
the researcher used qualitative research method, specifically a case study design. An interview of
selected students was conducted to gather data. Furthermore, this study started by reviewing
some related literatures that deal with the impact of e-Learning among students and how these
things work.

many more. According to Lefkowitz of Mind Research Institute, science, technology and
engineering, so essential to the future success of our country, cannot thrive without practitioners
having a solid mathematics foundation. Also, mathematics is the most important tool to
understand the world’s order and organization and mathematics success level has been one of the
crucial keys to school success and profession selection (Hulya & Yazici, 2014). But, despite
these claims, mathematics has never been a favorite for many students around the world
including the Philippines. One of the reasons for it is that mathematics is a difficult subject. As
many students would say, mathematics is undeniably one of the most difficult subjects in school.
As what the study of Abdul Gafoor & Kurukkan (2015) have found out, mathematics is
considered a difficult subject by most of the students due to aversive teaching style, difficulty in
following the instruction, difficulty in understanding the subject, and difficulty in remembering
its equations and ways to solve problem. Also, the same reason is given by students in the
mentioned study for disliking mathematics and there is a strong association between their belief
regarding the difficulty of subject and dislike towards math. That implies, students dislike
(1989), Ernest (1996) and Gadanidis (2012), they have claimed that negative perceptions and
myths of mathematics are widespread among the students, especially in the developed countries.
For Sam (2002), he has claimed that many students are scared of mathematics and feel powerless
in the presence of Mathematical ideas. They regarded mathematics as "difficult, cold, abstract,
and in many cultures, largely masculine" (Ernest, 1996, p.802). For Buxton, cited by Sam
(2002), he has viewed mathematics as "fixed, immutable, external, intractable and uncreative" or
"a timed test". For Peterson (1996), he has found that even scientists and engineers whose jobs

from which to select ready-to-use formulae, theorems, and results to advance their own theories.
Based on the different theoretical reviews, it shows that mathematics is one of the most difficult
subjects. Having this said, it is indeed necessary for the education sector to come up with
something that would solve this existing dilemma – that is eliminating the negative perception of
the students towards mathematics. Hence, one of the bigger challenges that mathematics
educators have encountered throughout the years is on the development of new programs and
introduction of various strategies that would lessen or totally eliminate the existing dilemma. It is
believed that diverting this way of thinking from the students has been the key goals of
mathematics educators to improve students’ perception in the subject. Hence, throughout the
years, mathematics educators have created opportunities to improve students’ motivation and
specifically e-Learning in mathematics teaching and learning. It is believed that e-Learning can
cater the needs of the type of students that we are having these days.
There have been many researches regarding the effectiveness of e-Learning to basic
education. According to Fry, Wild et al, they have described e-Learning as the delivery of
training and education via networked interactivity and distribution technologies (Owino, 2010).
Authors like Roffe (2002), Schank (2002) and Sambrook (2003), they have seen e-Learning
simply as learning and communication exercises across computers and networks or for that
matter any other electronic sources. For Khan (2005) e-Learning has been described in various
ways as learning using a number of different technologies and methods for delivery e.g.
Computer Based Training (CBT), Internet-based training (IBT), Web-based instruction (WBI),
advanced distributed learning(ADL), distributed learning (DL), distance learning, online learning

(OL), mobile learning (or m-learning) or remote learning and learning management systems
(LMS) (Ibid 2010). For Agrawal (2015), e-Learning, also known as internet-based fusion, is by
far the most significant of learning technologies that has emerged in the last 10 odd years and
According to Al-Ammari and Hamad, they have said that in e-Learning system, students are able
to interact anytime from wherever with different instructional material (text, sound, pictures,
video and so on) through Internet. Also, they have mentioned that learners can communicate
with teachers and classmates both individually and as a group discussion with the use of message
boards, instant message exchanges and video conferencing (Ibid 2010). Furthermore, many
researchers have found out positive effects of e-Learning in education. In the study of Agarwal &
Pandey (2013), the present century is the century of digitalization and informationization. Also,
they mentioned that e-Learning supports the widespread use of educational training and it has
various advantages over the traditional techniques of learning and is superior. Also, in the said
study, a lot of these students are attracted to a flexible, self-paced method of education to attain
their degree. As many researchers have found, e-Learning is a means to effective delivery of
lesson as it caters both the mathematically gifted students and the beginners. In relation to this,
many developed countries have already employed e-Learning in their education system like in
the United States, Canada, and most European countries, Japan, China, Singapore and many
more.
With regard to e-Learning, Singapore has been a dominant force in producing such
quality e-Learning platforms around the world. As the smartest country in the world in terms of
mathematics achievement in school according to report and study in 2015, Singapore education

is continuously escalating. The BBC says this is the conclusion of the Organization for
Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), an economic think tank that outlined its
findings in a new report ranking countries' school systems based on students’ mathematics and
science test scores. Through this, Singapore is considered the leader of mathematics education.
With the evolution of science and technology, Singapore has also moved forward and is able to
provide answers to the need of their people and education. With their Singapore Math being
introduced all over the world, many education systems have adopted their system especially
around Southeast Asian nations. In the Philippines, Singapore Math has finally been
implemented to many private schools. In order to be globally competitive, these private schools
have not only acquired its theories and curriculum but it also includes some of the best
technology platforms Singaporeans have created. One of these amazing creations is KooBits
Learning. It nurtures problem solvers, critical thinkers and lifelong learners. According to
KooBits company, this platform mainly focuses in Southeast Asian region. KooBits develops
next generation e-Learning platforms for primary school children. This is a math e-Learning
platform that perfected mathematics learning and fun. Users are constantly engaged in the
different activities within the platform and have graduated to become self-directed learners with
a snack for solving problems. The corporate vision of this platform is to enable a virtual school
in which all students have equal access to the best learning materials and environment available.

METHODOLOGY
A qualitative approach was used to know the impression of selected students on KooBits
ProblemSums e-Learning Platform. A case study design was used to analyze the data gathered.
In addition, selected students from the sixth grade level were chosen to be the respondents of the
study. Stratified random sampling was used in determining the respondents. Since, currently,
there are five sections in the said level, three students from each section were chosen.

Furthermore, in gathering data, an interview with the students was conducted. Interview
was conducted one on one, face to face basis and was done for five consecutive days during
recess, lunch or free time of the students. The reason for this was to avoid prompting of the
students’ response. Afterwards, the information was gathered and analyzed to come up with the

KooBits EDU is intended primarily for schools – including primary and secondary
schools, private institutions and international schools – within and outside of Singapore. KooBits

classroom materials, and track students’ progress. Students engage in interactive lessons and use
it as a tool to develop both digital literacy and visual literacy. According to KooBits, this e-

In this study, the researcher has found out various manifestations with regard to students’
Based on the results of the interview, it is quite impressive that most of them gave positive
reviews about the platform and mostly provided encouraging feedback. With the long term
vision of the creators of KooBits, which is to transform education beyond the traditional
classroom barrier, the researcher believes that the company is moving in the right direction.
When the aim of the company is to transform education, it is indeed necessary to promote
something that will nurture students’ needs during the process. To be able to achieve that, it is
right to motivate students to learn. While the world is living in a digital era, the researcher
believes that incorporating technology in the classroom will make a difference and that is the
reason why KooBits has existed. With the types of students we are having now, learning would
really become more fun and engaging when digital platforms are present. And through this, it is
really possible to achieve the learning that all educators have wanted. As many would believe,
learning often takes place when a person is having fun. As what Judy Willis (2007) said in her
11
IMPRESSION ON KOOBITS E-LEARNING 2018
journal article on Educational Leadership, she cited that neuroimaging studies and measurement
of brain chemical transmitters reveal that students' comfort level can influence information
transmission and storage in the brain (Thanos et al., 1999). Also, in the same article, she
mentioned that when students are engaged and motivated and feel minimal stress, information
flows freely through the affective filter in the amygdala and they achieve higher levels of
cognition, make connections, and experience “aha” moments. Such learning comes not from
quiet classrooms and directed lectures, but from classrooms with an atmosphere of exuberant
serves as a supplementary tool in the grade school mathematics classes. After one year of its
implementation, the researcher, who has personally experienced the said platform, has become
interested on how this platform really impacted the students. Based on the responses gathered
from the interview, the researcher has noticed common responses from the students. Without
giving the students suggestive statements on how they see KooBits as part of the mathematics
class schedule, many of them said that KooBits made mathematics really fun. As one student
stated, “It is fun. It exercises your brain in a fun way kasi in KooBits there’s game related to
math”. With brain games and daily challenges as main features of the said platform, it is possible
to have this impact to the students. As mentioned, when students become engage in the learning
process, students would enjoy it and eventually learn from it. In addition, KooBits also has made
surprising impact to students as it made their learning experience in the subject easier. As one
students mentioned, “It made my math class much more fun and easier because in KooBits we
learn something new”. This is just one of many who said that with KooBits made their math

class easy. This idea is a good one as it deviates from the claims of the different researchers
about mathematics as a difficult subject. Again, as what the study of Abdul Gafoor & Kurukkan
(2015) have found out, mathematics is considered a difficult subject by most of the students due
to aversive teaching style, difficulty in following the instruction, difficulty in understanding the
subject, and difficulty in remembering its equations and ways to solve problem. Also, the same
reason is given by students in the mentioned study for disliking mathematics and there is a strong
association between their belief regarding the difficulty of subject and dislike towards math. That
Finally, the researcher has found out that KooBits received well reception to the students.

despite the time the said platform has been used. Many of them said that KooBits has made their

Based on the results of the interview, many revealed that KooBits has been a very useful
tool for them. They believe that the said platform has contributed significantly with their studies
on the subject as it serves as a reviewer even without their books As one student said, “The
games that are educational and if the lesson is not in the book, I can use KooBits to study, to
review”. Another student said that “It’s fun and it is also like, it’s also studying. Masaya siya
gamitin kasi pwede ka magreview gamit yun. Tapos pwede ka rin maglaro”. They are able to
review in a fun way possible. It becomes more effective as learning increases when it is done in
an engaging and fun way. In addition, KooBits has also been perceived by the students as
something that offers a lot of practice exercises which enables them to understand the concept of
a particular topic better. One student mentioned, “It affects me in a good way because it practices
my brain”. Since there are more challenges provided in the said platform, students are able to see
different problems and they are able to see different ways of throwing similar problems. Thus,
helping them develop a solid foundation on a particular topic and pushing them to learn different
Finally, KooBits really has been a very useful tool for some students especially that they
can access this anytime and anywhere. As many regarded this as a reviewer, it becomes a good
spot for some students especially those who miss particular lessons while representing the school
in a competition or those who are joining important events in the school. As a student added, “I
like it because, I get to, cause I like something challenging, so, I usually answer KooBits to
challenge myself. It is also beneficial especially in doing assignments when I skip classes
15
IMPRESSION ON KOOBITS E-LEARNING 2018
One of the aspirations of KooBits is to bring back the spirit of problem-solving to our
children. KooBits wants to equip students with problem-solving skills that prepare them for real
world problems that they may encounter in their everyday lives. This aspiration is indeed a great
one as many of our students nowadays lack depth in terms of mathematics basic skills such as
problem solving.
One of the main features of KooBits ProblemSums is daily challenges. Here, students are
able to explore various problems that have varied levels of difficulty. In this sense, students are
pushed to the limit to think critically. And, based on the interview, KooBits is moving in the
right direction with the aspiration it has as many students claimed that KooBits enhances their
mathematics skills. It is quite impressive that most of them see the said platform as something
beneficial in terms of the development of their own mathematics capacity. With two of the
respondents mentioned about KooBits, “It can help my studying habits grow more and it
enhances my mathematics skill” and “What I like most about KooBits is you can learn more and
you can solve equations faster and method and also the daily challenges kasi it improves math
skills”.
Generally, though it is not clear how KooBits enhanced their skills, still, it is a step
towards its main goal. And, based on the responses, it is indeed encouraging to know how much
this platform impacted students’ mathematics skills. Whether its big or small, students know
themselves how much it helped them. Like what one student shared, “Actually, I improve talaga
16
IMPRESSION ON KOOBITS E-LEARNING 2018
this year because last year I was having some difficulty in my fractions or a certain topic and
then in multiplication last year I wasn’t that bad but there were some difficulties, but this year,
and when last year when I used KooBits, it really helped me, and it helps me this year”. With
this specific student, it only shows that KooBits improved his skill in fraction and multiplication.
This student wanted to emphasize his transition after it was introduced to him.
KooBits has generally received a very good impression to students in terms of its benefits
such as helping them get through a mathematics class without thinking how difficult it is and
also guiding them to become good problem solver as it enhances their mathematics skills through
the daily challenges. However, of course, it is usual as well to encounter challenges especially on
From the result of the study, students commonly answered that the main problem they
encountered with the use of the platform is having to answer such a hard problem. Actually,
since the platform was created in Singapore, the problems are actually Singapore-based like the
currency used is dollar. Also, students have to answer problems that are actually “advance” for a
Filipino student. As one student explained, “About the collecting coins and its difficulty. Some
are very advanced po”. Also this student added, “My only problems are about the coins or if not
the coins maybe just the change the price of the story a little cheaper and the difficulty should be
a little bit easier”. But, overall, KooBits really provide features that are student friendly and it
17
IMPRESSION ON KOOBITS E-LEARNING 2018
also provides problems that are challenging, yet, something that our students can learn something
In addition, secondary problem has also been experienced. Like accessing of the account
and other minor related technical aspect such as links and the likes etc. One student shared with
regard to the challenge faced, he said that “Sometimes the account does not open and you lose
your progress when you like accidentally click wrong buttons, or like links without saving”.
Overall, the researcher believes that these problems can be easily addressed as KooBits
always ask feedback from the students at the end of the school year. Also, these problems are
just minor compared to its effect to students’ mathematics skills and experience in general.
KooBits creators and the school will be constantly monitoring this to achieve better results in the
future.
e-Learning Platform
Teachers are the ones who look after students. Teachers are the best people who can
answer questions on how students perform in school from the beginning until the end. This is the
reason why the teacher of the selected students was also chosen to be a respondent in the study.
In this study, the teacher was only a secondary source of data since the research focused on the
students’ impression on the said platform. In Elizabeth Seton School, mathematics classes are
18

done five times a week and 50 minutes per day. Thus, the teacher meets the students not less than
In this study, the teacher was asked about classroom observations with regard to the
discussion. According to the teacher, she has noticed that the students are more engaged with
their school tasks. Since, KooBits ProblemSums e-Learning Platform provides various
challenges, students feel mathematics class like they are playing games rather than listening to
lectures; therefore, they enjoy the process of learning. Moreover, the teacher has also observed
that the students are urged to push themselves to do better with the activities. Through this, the
students’ understanding deepens as there is an increase with the level of difficulty. The teacher
has also shared that through KooBits e-Learning, the students have become responsible by
enabling them to control the tasks they undertake. The teacher has noticed that this platform
supports differentiation. These observations from the teacher support the claims of the students
who were interviewed about the relevance, advantages and positive effect of the KooBits
CONCLUSION
Education is indeed a vital aspect of mankind. It jumpstarts a toddler’s mind. It hones the
skills – both physical and intellectual – of a youngster. It polishes the culture and etiquette of a
man. It satisfies the longing pursuit of knowledge and understanding. Also, education prepares
every man to sustainable life. With all these, it is certain to put mathematics in the education
19
IMPRESSION ON KOOBITS E-LEARNING 2018
curriculum as it allows people to make sense of the world. According to an article from Smarter
Scotland, it is through mathematics that man enables to model real-life situations and make
connections and informed predictions. Mathematics equips man with many of the skills required
for life, learning and work. This reinforces the need for mathematics to play an integral part in
lifelong learning and be appreciated for the richness it brings. While mathematics plays an
integral part in the education curriculum at any level, it has never been an easy path for
mathematics educators to build the best possible platform and system for learning. But,
throughout the years, mathematics educators continue to evolve to be able to cater the needs of
Learning during classroom instruction. Thus, the KooBits ProblemSums e-Learning Platform has
been developed.
KooBits e-Learning platform has been found to help students to make learning
mathematics fun and easier, thus, making students’ mathematics skills improved. As shown in
the results and findings of the study, there is a great evidence on the impact of the KooBits e-
Learning Platform to the students’ mathematics skills. In addition, KooBits has also been found
to be a great tool in learning mathematics as it serves as a reviewer and additional tool for
practices. Students perceive KooBits as a useful tool as it provides exercises that cannot be found
in the book and can study mathematics wherever they are. Though, there were challenges
encountered, it is very much encouraging to see positive feedback from the students as they are
the most important clients here. Furthermore, KooBits ProblemSums e-Learning Platform has a
positive rating overall as it answers some of mathematics educators’ dilemma such a negative

class fun and at the same time helping students improve their mathematics skills.
Based on the results and finding in this study, the researcher wishes that there would be
more studies to be conducted regarding the use of this new platform in the country. This study is
the study. Also, this new platform contributes positively in terms of students’ mathematics skills.
In addition, the researcher would like to recommend that a bigger number of respondents would
be conducted in further studies related to this. Finally, since this study was conducted in a private
school and to grade school students, the researcher also wish that this platform will be
