Theory:
Permeability No. is defined as the rate of flow of air passing through a specimen under a standard
pressure. Standard condition for permeability test is usually taken as 2000cc of air at a pressure of 980
Pa (10 gm/cm2) to pass through a standard test specimen of 50.8 mm diameter and 50.8 mm height.
Permeability No. is defined by the following relation.
V, H
K
P. A.t
Where, V = Volume of air passing through the specimen in cm3
Apparatus required:
Procedure:
1. Take 145 to 175 gm of green sand and fill the specimen tube with it.
2. Allow a fixed weight of 6.35 kg to 7.25 kg to fall from 50.8±0.125 mm height on the
specimen.
3. Repeat step 2 three times to have a standardized ramming effect.
4. By trial and error ensure that the final specimen should have a height of 50.8±0.8 mm.
5. Check whether diameter of the specimen is 50.8 mm and record it.
6. Place the specimen along with the tube on the permeameter.
7. Fill the air chamber with approx 2000cc air at pressure of 980 Pascal. Note both volume and
pressure.
8. Now open the valve of the air chamber to connect it with the specimen tube.
9. With the stop watch record the time taken for the complete gas passes through the tube.

Questions:
1. Permeability depends on which factors?
2. How many types of permeability tests are there?
3. Arrange following materials in ascending order of permeability required and explain
your order; Steel, Brass, Aluminium, Cast Iron.
