LESSON: Reading Academic Texts: “Understanding Calories”

Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to…
1. Acquires knowledge of appropriate reading strategies for a better understanding of an academic
text
2. Determine the structure of an academic text
3. Use knowledge of text structure to glean the information he/she needs

A. Preparatory Activity

B. Mood Setting
1. Motivation
a. The students will bring some food items (preferably, their favorite food item)
with their nutritional information (e.g., a small can of sardines, a can of fruit
cocktail).
b. The teacher will then call the attention of the students to the part which
says “calories” or “energy” appears. He will then explain this distinction to
the class.
2. Unlocking Difficulties
Students will be asked the following:
a. Do you usually look at the nutritional information of food items?
b. What do you think is the importance of looking up the nutritional information
of food items especially the calories?
c. What do you know about calories? What do you want to know about them?

ENGAGE
A. Pre-reading Activity
The teacher will pose this question to the class: Before knowing what calories are, do
you think your favorite food item suits you in terms of caloric content? Do you think
you will still consume this food item after knowing more about calories?

B. Reading the text, “Understanding Calories”

ACTIVITY
A. Post-Reading Activity
1. The learners will individually go through the reading selection again and try to
identify the functions of each paragraph (e.g. Paragraph 1 introduces the topic by
defining calories)
2. They will then compare their work with a partner, and together they will discuss
their work and come up with one answer to be submitted to the teacher on a ½
sheet of paper.

A. Why is it important to understand calories?
B. Knowing what calories are, and the caloric content of your favorite food item, will you
still consume it on a regular basis?

TRANSFER
A. Research Work
1. The learners will interview a school athlete or a team coach and about calories
intake. They will ask him/her: What is a healthy intake of calories for an active
person?
2. The learners will submit a one-page report on their interview.
