CASE STUDY 3
POWER SUPPLY

SUBMITTED TO: ENGR. EARL JOHN DANGALAN

OPERATION OF THE CIRCUIT

Most power supplies are composed of basic components like transformer, rectifier, filter and
regulator. It changes the level of supply to be suitable to the load. Also, it ensures that the
output voltage is kept on constant level, remaining unchanged even with the change of AC
supply voltage, temperature and others.
The transformer is the one responsible for stepping up or stepping down the supply voltage
and coupling this to the rectifier section of the circuit. Then, the rectifier will be the ne to
convert the AC supply to a pulsating DC voltage. The purpose of the filter is to smoothen out
the pulsating dc voltage to a filtered dc voltage. Lastly, the regulator which is the one
responsible for keeping the output of the power supply at a constant level despite the big
changes in the load current or input line voltage.
In this power supply, 1N4001 diode is used to create a Full-Wave Bridge Rectifier connected to
a 1.2kilo ohms resistor and 1000uF capacitor. Also, to maintain a constant output, the Zener
diode, 1N4733A is used as a voltage regulator having an output voltage of 5 volts.
Considering the safety of the device, there is a required isolation in every part of the power
supply. Proper spacing between the components will be considered in the PCB layout and
