REGIONAL TRAINING OF TEACHERS ON THE SCIENCE CRITICAL CONTENT FOR GRADE 4 & 8

A DEMONSTRATION LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE IV

I. OBJECTIVES

Content Standard
The learners demonstrate understanding of grouping different materials based on their properties

Performance Standard
The learners should be able to recognize and practice proper handling of products

Learning Competency
1. Identify the materials that float and sink.
2. Describe the kind materials that float and sink

IV. PROCEDURE

ELICIT
A. Reviewing previous lesson or presenting the new lesson
“Spin the Wheel”

Teacher’s Activity Pupils Activity

You will be given the chance to spin the wheel. Yes it is.
The wheel will stop as soon as you say the
word “STOP”. The color of the wheel which will
be pointed will flash a picture and you will then
identify whether the picture is absorbent or non-
absorbent. Is the mechanics clear?

ENGAGE 1
B. Establishing a purpose for the lesson
Game: “The Boat is Sinking”

Here are the mechanics of the game.

If I say “The boat is sinking” you’re going to group
yourselves according to the number of groups
that I am going to tell. The pupils that can’t
join/give the number of groups will be eliminated
on the game. One of you will be announced the
winner. Are you ready? Yes we are.

Question: When I said “the boat is sinking” why We need to group ourselves because
do you think you need to group yourselves? we might sink if the boat is carrying
excess load.

ENGAGE 2
C. Presenting Examples/instances of new lesson
Group Activity

I am going to group you into three. Each group Teacher, what are we going to do with those
will be receiving materials needed for this activity. materials?
Here are the materials you need.
chalk orange
metal spoon plastic toy
plastic balls coin
sponge saucer
rock pencil

You’re going to observe all the material presented Yes we do.

to you. Then put the materials one at a time in a
basin of water. Observe which one float and
which do not. Record your findings by answering
the table given to you. Do you understand?

Name of What kind of material is Float Sink

Objects the object made of?

I am going to assign one pupil to compare and

interpret all the data collected to each group and The data collected shows that some objects
you will be the one also to present it on class. float while other sinks.

EXPLORE 1
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1

Look at this clear container with water. We’re

going to put objects and observe what will
happen.

What have you observed? We have observed that all the objects that were
placed in the water stays on top of the water.

Class all the objects on the water has the ability To float is to move on or near the surface liquid
to float. Now, based on what you have observed such as water without sinking.
please define the word “FLOAT”.

Give some examples of objects that float. Some examples of objects that float are, plastic
toy, ball, Styrofoam, wood and others.

Now we’re going to put another set of objects on

our clear container with water. Observe what will
happen.

What have you observed? We have observed that all the objects that were
placed in the water sink.

Kids, all the objects we have put in the water To sink is to make or allow something to become
sink. So, how will you now define the word thoroughly wet by settling it at the bottom of a
“SINK”? container with a liquid.

Kindly give examples of objects that sink. Some of the objects that sink are as follow: rock,
metal spoon, glass and others.

EXPLORE 2
E. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #2

What do you think is the reason why these Maybe because of the size of the objects.
objects float or sink?

Let us find out by watching the video clip.

Based on the video presented, it shows that its

density is the reason why some object neither
float nor sink. The size also of the object doesn’t
define whether an object will float or sink.
Some materials float no matter what their shapes
are such like Styrofoam and balsa wood. On the
other hand, some things float at first, but then
sink as they absorb water or take water through
holes. Is that clear? Yes it is!

EXPLAIN
F. Developing mastery (Leads to Formative Assessment)

Looking back on the data your group has

presented. Please answer the following guide
questions.
Questions: Answers:
Group 1: Group 1:
1. What did you observe when you placed 1. We have observed that when we placed
the materials one at a time in water? different objects in water it may either
float or sink.
2. Based on your activity, which of the 2. The materials that sank were coins, rock,
materials sank? metal spoon and others.
3. Which of the materials floated? 3. The materials that floated were wood,
plastic cup, ball, etc.

Group 2: Group 2:
1. Compare all the objects that floated. Is 1. All the objects that float are light objects
there anything common among each and are less dense.
one? 2. The objects are denser than the water
2. Compare all the objects that sank. What that’s why it sank. The particles that made
is common among one of them? up the objects are closer together.

Group 3: Group 3:
1. Fill out the data chart. 1. Fill out the data chart.

ball rock
orange saucer

ELABORATE 1
G. Finding Practical applications of concepts and skills

Assuming that you and your family went on a If I can’t swim I will use floaters/life vests for me
vacation. At the resort there’s a big and deep not to sink.
pool. You want to swim but hesitant because
you are not that good in swimming. What will
you use, in order for you not to sink?

Why will you use those particular objects? I will use those objects because they’re light and
filled with air, in that way I will not sink in the
pool.

ELABORATE 2
H. Making generalizations and abstractions about the lesson

What kind of materials float? sink? The materials that float are made of particles that
are not closer together that made them less
dense while the materials that sink are made of
tiny particles that are closer together that made
them denser.
EVALUATE
I. Evaluating Learning
Directions: Identify the materials that float or sink
by drawing () if the objects float and () if the
objects sink. Answer:
______ 1. rubber duck 1. 
______ 2. large stone 2. 
______ 3. metal spoon 3. 
______ 4. plastic bottle without cover 4. 
______ 5. wood 5. 
EXTEND
J. Additional activities for application or remediation
For your assignment please look around the Yes, it is.
surroundings. Then list down 5 materials that
float and 5 materials that sink. Is that
understood?
