Topic:  Social  Studies  Teachers  and  Controversial  Topics
1.   Journal  Articles:  Journal  of  Social  Science  Education,  Zafer  Kus,  2015
This  study  investigates  social  studies  and  science  teachers’  and  their  attitudes  associated  with
controversial  issues.  The  data  was  collected  through  interviews  and  in-‐classroom  observation.
This  study  was  conducted  in  a  city  near  the  center  of  Turkey  called  Kirsehir.  This  particular  study
was  done  during  the  2012-‐2013  academic  years.  Social  studies  teachers  stated  that  their
priority  goals  when  speaking  about  controversial  topics  was  to  raise  active  citizens  and  set  up  a
democratic  classroom  environment.  Science  teachers  stated  that  that  their  goals  were  to  raise
scientifically  thinking  students.
2.   Theses  and  Dissertations:  Latina  social  studies  teachers  negotiating  public
institutions,  Elizabeth  D.  Rivas  ,  2017
This  study  explores  how  mandated  polices  enacted  by  public  institutions.  The  study  states  that
knowledge  is  social  constructed.  Latina  social  studies  teachers  use  their  identity,  ethnicity,  race,
and  gender  to  change  the  parameters  set  by  local  school  districts.  The  author  goes  on  to  say
that  her  teaching  experience  is  similar  to  that  of  Sal  Castro.  Sal  Castro  was  a  champion  for
student  rights  and  fought  for  unequal  conditions.
3.   Books:  White  teachers,  diverse  classrooms:  a  guide  to  building  inclusive  schools,
promoting  high  expectations,  and  eliminating  racism,  Julie  Landsman  and  Chance
Lewis,  2006
The  book  is  about  students  facing  low  expectations  and  failure  and  how  teachers  can  help
students  achieve  and  bring  them  success.
4.   Audio:  I  didn’t  find  any  audio  on  my  topic.
5.   Books:  Educating  about  social  issues  in  the  20th  and  21st  centuries:  a  critical
annotated  bibliography
This  book  is  compiled  of  critical  essays  showing  strategies  and  concerns  about  teaching  and
