English New Media 10

New Media 10 is an English stream with shared emphasis on exploration and expression of identity,
insight into perspectives and experiences of people from a variety of places, development of
community and relationships through collaboration, and investigation into the increasing
importance of digital media in communicating and exchanging ideas.

● Participation is mandatory. Students must prepare to take an active role in class.


● Attendance, punctuality and preparedness are essential.
● Absences have a direct impact on fellow students and group work. Students may be asked to
complete any presentations on their own time if missed in class. (Individual basis)
● Treat technology within the classroom as your own, the golden rule is: If you don’t know, ask

Students unable to sustain expectations may have technology privileges suspended and alternative
assignments assigned in order to accommodate this change

TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

We will be using Teams in Office 365 to facilitate online conversation and to hand in and share
assignments. Your school computer login acts as your Office 365 username and password

Class materials including media, some activities, and supplementary information will be on a
class website along with a course schedule. There is no login required to access this information,
the url is : https://smithmedia10.weebly.com
It is requested that you respectfully utilize your devices in class, meaning they should not be
present during class discussions or presentations. Utilizing your device in a productive manner in
an effort to complete assignments or further your learning is expected and not doing so will result
in a discussion about some interventions to facilitate this goal.

UNITS:
Though we focus on New Media in this class you are all required to take a traditional English in later
years. As such we will be looking at both texts grounded in New Media as well as more traditional
texts through a New Media lens. The following are the units covered in the class in the order we will
progress through them.
Digital Citizenship
Social Media and Participatory Culture
Romeo and Juliet
Novel Study
New Journalism

Throughout the course we will be completing activities that allow you to meet all of the required
skills and competencies outlined in the English New Media 10 curriculum noted at the website below

EVALUATION
Evaluation will be based on the Surrey School District Proficiency Scale outlined below.
Proficiencies are linked to percentages which appear on your formal reports as both a letter grade and
percentage.
INTERNET TOOLS USAGE
As part of our learning we will frequently be utilizing a variety of internet tools that may require a login
or sign up using a student’s provided surrey schools e-mail. These actions require a form to be signed by a
student’s parent or guardian. If your parent or guardian chooses that you do not participate in these
activities alternatives will be made to ensure your learning is not impacted in a negative way .
