Scene 5:

 Alex as a great military leader tries to put himself in his enemy’s shoes.
 He proved to be a democratic leader by asking for his company’s comments
 He revealed his plan to Parmenion, Ptolemy, Cleitus, Hephaestion,
Perdiccas and Philots
 He asked Ptolemy to take over the special duties he had assigned to
Parmenion (if anything happened to Alex.) as parmenion would
automatically assume the responsibility of commander in chief.
 Alex’s Plan:
o Depend on Darius’s plan to design his own.
o Meet Darius one mile away infront of Gaugemela’s village
o Cross the desert in summer to surprise Persians.
o Depend on the persian’s lach of cohesion
o Let the Persians outflank them on both wings
o Break through in the interior of the Persian army where he confind
darius and kill or capture him.
o Send a couple of patrols to scare the Persians and keep them awake
to fire them.
 Alex should destroy Darius’s army or they will destroy him.
 Alex understands the Persians who go by the book.
 Philotas suggested to organize a fake panic among the Persians, Alex
accepted the suggestion but refused to send philots with them as he was
afraid to be killed or injured.
 Alexander was challenging his father’s spirit and trying to raise his anger to
give him the power to conquer Persia (by recalling his self confidence)
 Parmenion suggested that Alex shouldn’t be wearing his red cloak or even
be riding Bucephalus as not to be detected.
 Parmenion wanted to sacrifice his life for alex’s sake.
 They knew that queen mother will be used in poisoning Alex as Darius knew
that Alex trusted her.
 Alex refused to believe that as he trusted the queen mother.
 Alex had a conversation with queen mother which reveled to us how queen
mother loved alex as her son by telling her son that she would poison alex
just to make sure that he wouldn’t send anybody else to do.
  Alex was so kind to her and considerate but still so ambitious to conquer
and rule the whole world.
 When she asked him about his mother he wondered how someone can
love his father (like darius) and how a woman can love her husband (like
queen mother) which was totally contrary to his case.

Scene 6
 Darius believed that he is now defeated and he lost hope
 Bessus was trying to encourage Darius who had lost hope after being
defeated by Alex
 Darius believed that Alex is a demi god supported by Divine power
 Bessus was trying to urge Darius return to battle to fight Alex
 Bessus was getting furious of Darius’s surrender
 Bessus attempts to kill Darius because low morals will spread among the
army
 Because of bessus betrayal,Darius shocked everyone by naming Alex as his
successor
 Alex was sad for Darius’s death, as it wasn’t his target to kill Darius, he was
aiming for conquering persia and he had nothing personal against Darius
 Darius death in a farm cart with a sword ( foreshadowing: untying the
gordian knot in gordium, the wagon in the citadel)
 Alex regretted untying the gordian knot with a sword as it wasn’t the right
way ( because of Darius’s tragic end)
 Alex regretted using power rather than reasons
