Homemade Ayurvedic Toothpaste, Tooth

Powder + Mouthwash Recipes
Mallika Varma Herbal Remedies 13,440 Views

For a natural mouth, these recipes for Ayurvedic tooth power, Ayurvedic toothpaste and
Ayurvedic mouthwash are excellent.

They are made with readily available herbs and spices you’ll likely have at home. These
herbs and spices are especially suggested for oral health by Ayurveda experts and are
also scientifically approved. Each recipe is equally good for adults and children.

Ayurveda In Oral Health

Various procedures for maintaining oral hygiene are explained in detail under the topic
of daily routines (Dinacharya) in all the classical texts of Ayurveda.
These include brushing the teeth (Danta dhavana), massaging the teeth and gums
(Pratisarana), tongue cleaning (Jivha nirlekhana), oil pulling (Gandush) and gargling or
mouthwash (Kavala).1
Ayurveda recommends using herbs which are astringent, pungent or bitter in taste for
brushing the teeth. Brushing should be done in such a way that it does not injure the Page | 3
gums.2 During gargling or mouthwash, the mouth is filled to 3/4 capacity with the
medicated fluid. The fluid is swished in the mouth for a specific time and then spat out.

How To Make Ayurvedic Mouthwash (Triphala Decoction)
Take 40-50 gm (8-10 tsp) of Triphala powder and boil it in one liter (about 4 cups) of
water until it is reduced to 250 mL (1 cup). When it cools, filter it with a strainer and
keep this preparation in a clean, sterilized bottle.
Use 20-50 ml (2-3 Tbsp) of this decoction as a mouthwash.

You can use it up to three times a day. You can also add honey and rock salt or sea salt
according to your palatability. This will enhance its effectivity.

Benefits Of Triphala Decoction

Triphala has anti-caries activity. It is valuable in the prevention and treatment of several
diseases of the mouth such as dental caries, spongy, bleeding gums, gingivitis, and
stomatitis.12 It prevents the accumulation of acids and plaque formation on the surface
of the tooth, and thus prevents further demineralization and the breakdown of tooth
enamel. It has the same action on bacteria as that of Chlorhexidine mouthwash usually
recommended by dentists for treating plaque.13
One study showed that Triphala mouthwash with oral powder of Triphala used over a
period of one month reduced tooth mobility, pocket depth, bleeding gums, sensitivity
to heat and cold, and calculus formation with minimal recurrence in all the clinical
parameters.14

Massaging your gums with your (clean) fingers will stimulate increased blood flow to the massaged area of the gums.
The increased blood flow improves the body’s natural defenses to protect infected gums via the immune system. Quite a
number of dental professionals recommend gum massage daily, whether the gums are sore or not.

Apply the mixture to your gums. Dip one finger into the mixture and place it on your gum line.
Gently massage your gums with your fingers using small circular motions. You can also apply
the mixture to your gums using a soft toothbrush.
 Massage for two minutes.
 Apply the mixture two or three times a week.[3]
 Stop using the paste if you notice that your gums are becoming more irritated.

WHEN TO MASSAGE YOUR GUMS

on November 30, 2016 in Periodontal Disease

When you typically think about the term “massage” things such as a back massage or foot massage likely come to
mind. But did you know that massage is actually a technique that can be used to help ease any oral pain that you
may be suffering from as well? Whether you are suffering from something like gingivitis, tooth sensitivity, or you
simply have something lodged in between your gums, adding massage to the healing process (along with visiting Dr.
Janice Scott) will help your gums to heal at a quicker rate than otherwise. Read on to learn more about massage.
How to Massage
There are a few different ways that you can massage your gums. The first one involves your finger and the second
one involves using a water flosser. Page | 12
 Finger Massage: When using your finger to massage your gums, take the pointer finger on your dominant hand and
start at the bottom of your gums applying a slight bit of pressure. Then move your finger in a slow and circular motion.
You should feel a little bit of tension but not pain. If you are feeling pain, then stop right away.
 Water Flosser: Water flosser’s aren’t only great tools used to get trapped food out from in between your teeth but they
are also good at massaging sore gums as well. When using a water flosser for this purpose, make sure the water is
luke warm because it will help to soften up the gum tissue. Then simply turn the water flosser on and move it around
your mouth focusing on your gums and making sure the pressure isn’t either too strong or too weak.
Importance of Massage
Gently massaging your gums can help to break up any tissue or bacteria that are contributing to any pain that you
may be experiencing. As a way to alleviate pain and discomfort throughout your body, oral massage can help give
your mouth that same instant relief.

How Charcoal Works

Activated charcoal is a highly absorbent substance. It removes toxins when they
adhere to the surface of the charcoal. It is not absorbed by the body, but passes
through the GI system, so chemicals and toxins bind to it, which then pass through
the body and are expelled by the digestive system.

In the 1800s, two men took lethal doses of poisons (including arsenic) and survived
without harm… their secret: they mixed the poisons with activated charcoal powder.
(Stating the obvious: do not try to repeat these experiments!)

Activated charcoal is extremely effective at binding to toxins from household

chemicals, ingested medicines, and other chemicals from the body, especially when
taken within 30 minutes of ingestion. For this reason, it is a great first treatment for
any kind of poisoning, but should not be taken within several hours of medications
(or even vitamins) that DO need to be absorbed.

I had used activated charcoal when I had an awful bout of food poisoning, and it
worked wonders! I mixed about a tablespoon of activated charcoal with water and Page | 16
drank quickly. The food poisoning symptoms went away within a couple of hours.
This one dose was enough to remedy my food poisoning, but others report having
to take this dose several times within a day before finding relief.

Charcoal is not a substance I would take regularly, as it can cause constipation and
block mineral absorption if it is taken when it is not needed. Also, it can’t be mixed
with dairy products or many foods, as they lower its effectiveness. Charcoal can also
cause dehydration in large doses so it is important to consume enough water when
consuming charcoal.

How Does Activated Charcoal Whiten Your Teeth?

Page | 17

So, it’s all well and good that

activated charcoal is an effective poison remedy… but does it really work to whiten
teeth?

Overview
Activated charcoal is a fine-grained black powder made from a variety of natural
substances, such as coconut shells, olive pits, slowly burned wood, and peat.

The powder becomes activated when oxidized under extreme heat. Activated
charcoal is very porous and highly adsorbent. It also has a wide surface area.

Unlike absorbent substances, activated charcoal’s adsorbent nature allows it to bind

to toxins and odors, rather than soaking (absorbing) them up.

Activated charcoal shouldn’t be confused with the charcoal you use for barbecuing.
Although similar, barbecue charcoal is manufactured to be a fuel and emits carbon
dioxide when heated. It may have a carcinogenic effect on health. Activated
charcoal, on the other hand, doesn’t contain these types of toxins.

Page | 18
Activated charcoal’s adsorbent nature has been referenced in medical literature for
centuries. In the early 1800s, activated charcoal started to gain prominence as a
treatment for accidental ingestion of poison.

Because it can stop certain types of poison from being absorbed from the gut into
the bloodstream, it’s still used for this purpose today. It can also counteract drug
overdoses.

There’s some scientific evidence, and lots of anecdotal information, about activated
charcoal’s other benefits and uses. These include reducing underarm and flatulence
odor.

You can find activated charcoal in facial masks and shampoos. Because of its ability
to bind to toxins, some people believe activated charcoal can whiten teeth, too.

Before you start brushing with this grainy black substance, here’s what you should
know.

Charcoal teeth whitening

You can find an array of dental products containing activated charcoal on store
shelves, from toothpastes to kits. Products containing this ingredient claim to
remove coffee stains, wine stains, and plaque.

But despite its popularity, there’s no scientific evidence backing up activated

charcoal’s benefits for teeth.

Since there’s no data behind the claims that activated charcoal is safe or effective,
products containing this ingredient aren’t eligible for the American Dental
Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance.
According to the ADA, activated charcoal’s abrasive texture might even harm rather
than whiten teeth by wearing down tooth enamel.

Despite this lack of scientific evidence, some people still swear by activated
Page | 19
charcoal’s ability to eliminate tooth stains and whiten teeth.

Charcoal teeth whitening DIY

If you’d like to try activated charcoal to whiten your teeth, you can purchase it as a
powder or in capsules that you open. Mix with water to make a paste. You can also
try sprinkling the charcoal onto your wet finger or toothbrush.

Keep in mind that this technique may be hard to finesse. Activated charcoal can also
stain fabrics and countertops.

Precautions for using activated

charcoal on teeth
It’s important to protect your teeth by using products that won’t wear down enamel.
Since overuse of activated charcoal products can lead to teeth erosion, use them
cautiously.

The ADA recommends choosing toothpastes with a relative dentin abrasivity (RDA)
level of 250 or less. Try to choose activated charcoal toothpastes that meet that
guideline.

If that isn’t possible, use the product only for a short period of time. You can also
alternate it with a fluoride toothpaste.

To reduce abrasiveness, try using your fingers to rub activated charcoal on your
teeth rather than applying it with a toothbrush.
Activated charcoal products aren’t approved for teeth whitening by the U.S. Food
and Drug Administration. Moreover, these products may not be appropriate for use
in children and people who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Page | 20
Keep in mind that some activated charcoal products contain other ingredients, like
sorbitol.

Sorbitol is an artificial sweetener that can cause allergic reactions in some people. It
may also have a laxative effect if too much is swallowed.

Before using activated charcoal, consider checking in with your dentist to determine
if it’s the right choice for you.

Alternative at-home teeth whiteners

You can achieve a bright smile in a variety of ways.

Take good care of your teeth by brushing at least twice every day. Make sure to
brush after consuming drinks that commonly stain teeth, such as black coffee and
red wine.

If you smoke cigarettes, you’ve probably noticed that they stain your teeth. If you
need another reason to quit, add getting a brighter smile to your list.

There are many safe, effective methods for naturally whitening teeth at home. Try
the following:

 Baking soda is a natural whitening ingredient that can be found in many

toothpastes. You can also make a paste at home by combining it with water.
Baking soda is also a good breath freshener.
 Diluted hydrogen peroxide can help whiten teeth over time. Try using it as a rinse
before or after brushing. Never use hydrogen peroxide at full strength, though, as
it can irritate gums.
 There are many brands of over-the-counter whitening strips, gels, and
toothpastes. Many have the ADA Seal of Acceptance. These products range in
price and effectiveness. Read reviews before buying so you have an idea of what
to expect.
Page | 21

Takeaway
Activated charcoal has some proven uses, but teeth whitening isn’t one of them.
Instead, look for products that have the ADA Seal of Acceptance.

If you do decide to try activated charcoal to whiten your teeth, use it only in
moderation. Activated charcoal is abrasive and shouldn’t be used long term, as it
can erode tooth enamel.

Talk to your dentist to see if this treatment is safe for you to try. They can also
discuss other alternatives for you.

ctivated charcoal and other health benefits

Some medical professionals claim that activated charcoal may improve
kidney function.

This is due to its toxin-binding qualities, and through reducing the number
of waste products that the kidneys have to filter. This is especially
beneficial for those suffering from kidney disease, a disease in which the
kidneys can no longer properly filter waste products.

Also, if you are one of many people struggling with high cholesterol,
activated charcoal has been shown to lower cholesterol. It’s able to bind
cholesterol acids in the gut, limiting the amount that the body absorbs. One
study conducted showed that cholesterol was lowered by 25 percentby
taking activated charcoal each day for four weeks. Other studies also
Page | 22
proved that activated charcoal prevents the absorption of “bad” cholesterol.

Activated charcoal has uses that span from medicine to natural beauty. It
has become very popular to use activated charcoal in skin treatment.
Applying it to the skin is said to purify the pores and treat acne.

Is Activated Charcoal OK for Teeth Whitening?

In the past decade teeth whitening has become a global industry. From
dental office bleaching treatments to DIY home remedies, the perfect white
smile is well sought after.

Can activated charcoal safely whiten teeth? There’s no formal evidence

that activated charcoal whitens teeth.

However, activated charcoal has been FDA approved for many health
uses. The American Dental Association has not currently approved any
activated charcoal products for dentistry.

Though, observations suggest that using activated charcoal on your teeth

is effective in absorbing plaque and other compounds that stain teeth.
Meaning, the chemical properties of activated charcoal is a natural teeth
whitener. It doesn’t neutralize the toxins—it binds to them, resulting in
whiter teeth.
A balanced blend of select natural substances that have been dissolved in saliva can expose the gums to their properties
and can also help provide lubrication underneath your fingers. Gum tissues have absorptive capabilities. They are mucous
membranes (as are the linings of the food-absorbing stomach and intestines) and are part of the gastro-intestinal tract, so
the choice of natural substances is important. Harsh chemicals should definitely not be used.
To massage with the typical powders of natural substances, place a very small amount in the dry palm of a hand. Dab a
moistened finger into the powder and touch the sore area of gums. Give it a second or so to let the powder completely
dissolve into a liquid before massaging the area for about 15 seconds.

In the following article, we will discuss how even such a simple act as cleansing the teeth has
profound spiritual significance when it is performed methodically as prescribed by the scriptures.
Let us understand the process step by step.

1. Praying to the cleansing substance

Pray to the substance used for cleansing the teeth, as given ahead.

आआआआआआआआ आआआ आआआआ: आआआआआ: आआआआआ आआआआआ आ आ

आआआआआआ आआआआआआआआ आ आआआआआ आ आआआआ आआ आआआआ आआआआआआआ आआ

Meaning : Bless me with a long life, strength, success, radiance, subjects, animals, wealth,
Brahman (God Principle), intellect and the power to comprehend.
(This is the great Hindu Dharma, one that teaches offering of gratitude also towards a plant
useful in cleansing the teeth, and thereby perceiving divinity in it ! – Compiler)

2. Which substances should be used and

which should be avoided in cleansing the teeth ?
A. Using twigs of trees like Neem,
Khair (Cutch tree), Karanj, Audumbar for cleansing the teeth
Page | 26

What is the underlying spiritual science in using twigs for tooth cleansing ?

Cleansing the teeth with a twig of Neem, Audumbar etc. disintegrates the Raja-Tama
predominant waves on the teeth, facilitating the generation of pure gases in the mouth. These
beneficial gases gradually spread in the voids of the body and provide the voids within the body
with energy to continue the day’s activities.

Using cow-dung ash or powder of alum for cleansing the teeth

Let us understand the science underlying this practice

Teeth are predominantly a blend of the Pruthvi-tattva (Absolute Earth Principle) and the Apa-
tattva (Absolute Water Principle).

1. Food collected in the spaces between the teeth during the process of eating, create Raja-Tama-
predominant foul odour over a time, making the atmosphere within the void of the mouth
impure.

2. Why Cow-dung ash ?

Ash made from burning dried cow-dung contains gases that have fragrance akin to that of Tej-
tattva (Absolute Fire Principle). Cleansing the teeth by forceful rubbing of this ash onto the teeth
disintegrates the Raja-Tama-predominant and odorous waves within the void of the mouth, and
thus helps in retaining the purity of the mouth.

3. Rinsing the mouth thoroughly with water thereafter dissolves the remaining harmful waves
and gases in the mouth, thus purifying it completely.
The effectiveness of Alum in tooth cleansing

1. Fragrant gas having momentum and associated with the friction related Tej-tattva is concealed
in alum. Applying alum helps in concentration of both, the Raja-Tama-predominant waves and
waste gases in the teeth, in the void of the mouth.

2. The concentrated atmosphere formed at the level of Tej indicating the disintegration process
of Raja-Tama-predominant waves, gets washed away because of the rinsing of the mouth with
water.

3. Thus, along with the teeth, it helps cleanse the void of the mouth as well. Cow-dung ash
prepared by burning cow-dung is more beneficial than alum.

3. To cleanse the teeth based on the tridosh (Three defects)

and trigun (Three components), use a twig of a tree, cow-dung ash
or alum
Compiler
It is recommended that the teeth be cleansed with a twig of a tree, cow-dung or alum. Should the
substance used for cleansing be changed everyday ?

A Scholar
No. Use the substance that matches your Prakruti (Constitution).

A. Tridosh

Depending on whether Vata ( Wind ), Kapha ( Phlegm ) or Pitta ( Bile ) is the predominant factor
of the constitution, use a twig, cow-dung ash or alum respectively.

B. Trigun

In terms of the Principle, it is appropriate that Sattvik, Rajasik and Tamasik individuals use a
twig, cow-dung ash or alum respectively.

Use a powder prepared by mixing

various Ayurvedic medicines for cleansing the teeth
Do not brush the teeth with the twig of the tendu tree
Underlying science
The Tendu (Ebony-Diospyros melanoxylon) twig is tamasik; hence, using it to cleanse the teeth

is prohibited.

Method of cleansing the teeth

1. Cleansing the teeth in the squatting posture or standing in one place
The teeth get cleansed properly if cleansing is done by squatting or standing in one place. Hence,
do not cleanse them while walking about.

2. Why is cleansing the teeth with fingers better than cleansing them with a
toothbrush ?

A. The body feels more closeness to its finger, than it does to a lifeless toothbrush.

B. A toothbrush only cleans the teeth and removes the food particles collected between the teeth.
However, it has no effect on the gums from where the teeth originate. The healthier the gums, the
higher are the chances of the teeth remaining healthy.

C. A finger, along with cleansing the teeth, automatically massages the gums and enhances their
health. The Apa-tattva is subtler than the Pruthvi-tattva and hence, more effective.

D. So, taking care of the Apa-tattva predominant gums together with cleansing is more important
than merely taking care of the Pruthvi-tattva predominant teeth.

3. Physical and psychological benefit obtained on

cleansing the teeth with a finger or a twig, instead of a toothbrush
Bristles of a toothbrush are artificial. They emit Raja-Tama-predominant particles. Contact of
these bristles with the teeth and gums causes a covering of Raja-Tama-predominant waves to
form around them. Thus, the teeth are cleansed only at the gross level; but at the subtle level,
they remain impure. Cleansing the teeth with a finger helps transmit energy from the body to the
gums through the finger. Thus, the gums and teeth benefit from Sattvikta and are cleansed at the
gross as well as the subtle levels.
A. Pressure of the finger on the gums amounts to massaging them. It helps in strengthening the
gums.

B. When twigs of the Neem tree are used for cleansing, in addition to better cleansing of the
teeth, the teeth and gums get the benefit of the juice and Chaitanya (Divine consciousness) in
Neem, and get strengthened. Page | 29

Meaning : It is correct to use the ring finger and thumb to apply the toothpowder. Using the
middle finger or the little finger is optional, because certain schools of thought prohibit it.
However, all prohibit using the index finger.
A. Use the ring finger while cleansing the outer surface of teeth. If this is not possible for any
reason, then use the middle or little finger.

B. Use the thumb while cleansing the inner surface of teeth.

5. Spiritual explanation of the cleansing process

While cleansing the teeth on the outer surface with the middle finger using an Ayurvedic tooth
powder, disintegration of the Raja-Tama predominant particles in the gums and voids of the teeth
occurs due to the Tej-tattva emitted by the middle finger, along with that generated from the
friction.
