FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE SMOKING


BEHAVIOR OF THE STUDENTS OF SMAN 2, GARUT
DISTRICT

Background: Smoking habits are widespread in almost all groups, including adolescence. Some
adolescents are able to overcome this transition well, but some other may experience a decrease in
psychological conditions, physiology, as they involve in smoking behavior. One of the reasons that
cause teenagers to smoke is a stimulant. Stimulant effect of nicotine can stimulate enthusiasm, help to
think and concentrate, prevent fatigue, maintain performance on tasks that are monotonous and long,
and improve abilities in stressful situations (Hutapea, 2013). In March 2018, the researcher conducted
a preliminary survey by interviewing 15 people who like smoking. The results showed that 11 out of
15 students knew that smoking can cause health problems and 4 people did not know if smoking can
cause health problems. 12 people disagreed if smoking is stated to be a symbol of virility, but can
relieve stress. There were also people who said that either smoking or not smoking will remain be
affected by the disease and, hence, respondents continued to smoke. Most respondents recognize
cigarettes from the internet, advertisements on television, friends, and their father.
Research objective: the study intends to investigate factors that influence the smoking behaviors of
SMAN 2 Garut students.
Method: This research is an analytical survey research involving Cross Sectional design. The
population in this study was all male and female students who like to smoke as many as 241 people.
The total sample was 71 people
Results: The results of the analysis indicate that there is a relationship between several influential
aspects and smoking behavior of SMAN 2 students, Garut Regency. First, there is a relationship
between attitude and smoking behavior of the students with the p-value=0.003. Second, there is a
relationship between knowledge and the smoking behavior of students with p-value=0.001. Third,
there is a relationship between infrastructure and smoking behavior of the students with the
p-Value= 0.044. Fourth, there is a relationship between parents and smoking behaviors of students
with t h e p - v a l u e = 0 . 0 4 3 . F i f t h , t h e r e i s a r e l a t i o n s h i p between advertisement
and smoking behavior with p-value = 0.013. L a s t , there is a relationship between peers with
smoking behavior with p-value = 0.024.
Conclusion: there is a relationship between attitudes, knowledge, facilities, infrastructure, parents,
advertisements, and peers, and smoking behavior. It is suggested to all related parties to provide
guidance to the students to avoid smoking behavior, and reinforce the socialization of the smoking
prohibition in school.
