safety tips for the students. As we know, there has been an increase in the
accidents reported involving students of this school. I hope this talk will
raise your awareness to be more responsible and careful when using the
road.

I would like to identify some of the reasons why road accidents

occur. First, speeding beyond the prescribed limits is the main cause. Some
drivers not only speed but also drive recklessly, breaking road rules and
beating the traffic lights. Moreover, drivers who are tired after long
distance driving or after a long day work, may not be able to concentrate
on the road, thus causing accidents. Youngsters using the road as their
racing track is another cause too. Drivers who do not check and maintain
their vehicles often may be involved in accidents because their vehicle is
faulty. Many potholes and uneven roads which contribute to the poor
condition of the road too can cause accidents.

However, these problems can be overcome with strict enforcement of

traffic rules to those who flaunt the law. The offenders should be caught
and fines should be increased. Only road-worthy vehicles, which have
been maintained well, should be permitted on the roads. Awareness
campaigns on safe driving should be carried out everywhere. Since young
drivers are high on the accident list, their age limit should be increased. If
the drivers are involved in any accidents, their license should be
suspended.

News about road accidents and road accidents fatalities always appear in
newspapers and on news bulletin over the radio and the television. Some
people lose their life whereas some suffer serious injuries. On many occasions,
school children were the victims. It is for the reason that our school has decided
to launch a “Road Safety Week” campaign with the aim of raising awareness
among the students on the need to be more responsible on the road.
Why do road accidents occur? One of the causes of the road accidents is
because the road users or the students do not use the overhead bridge available
while crossing the busy road. These students think that using the overhead
bridge will waste their time and they tend to take risks by running across the
road. Their action is very dangerous to them as they might be hit by the
speeding vehicles. So, students are advised to use the overhead bridge or zebra
crossing where available when crossing the busy road.
Riding bicycles side by side in the middle of the road is another cause of
road accidents. This is very dangerous because they might be hit from the back
by other vehicles. To avoid this from happening, they have to follow the flow
of the traffic and cycle in a single file along the road.
Apart from that, students might be the victims of road accidents if they
play on the road. They enjoy themselves running, talking and joking with one
another while crossing the road without realising the dangers that they might
face. So, students are advised to be careful when walking or crossing the road
as it is not a playground.
Finally, another cause of road accidents is the students are not being alert
when using the road. They tend to talk with one another while walking along
the road or while crossing the road. Sometimes they do not aware of the
oncoming vehicles and their careless actions might cause unfortunate
accidents to happen.
Putting it in a nutshell, it is really important that all the road users follow
the road safety rules in order to prevent road accidents. As we all know,
“prevention is better than cure”. So, it is safer to follow these rules than to be
sorry. We should remember that safety is our responsibility.
