General Information for Removing and Installing FRUs
This section describes precautions you must take and general procedures you must follow when
removing, installing, or storing field-replaceable units (FRUs). The procedures in this section apply to FRU
handling during hardware upgrades as well as during general replacement.
FRUs are designed to be powered up at all times. This means you can accomplish FRU replacements
and most hardware upgrades while the cabinet is powered up. To maintain proper airflow for cooling and
to ensure EMI compliance, make sure all front bezels, filler panels, and filler modules are reinstalled after
the FRU replacement or hardware upgrade is completed.

Avoiding Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) damage

When replacing or installing FRUs, you can inadvertently damage the sensitive electronic circuits in the
equipment by simply touching them. Electrostatic charge that has accumulated on your body discharges
through the circuits. If the air in the work area is very dry, running a humidifier in the work area helps
decrease the risk of ESD damage. You must use the following procedures to prevent damage to the
equipment, so read the following instructions carefully.
 Provide enough room to work on the equipment. Clear the work site of any unnecessary materials or
materials that naturally build up electrostatic charge, such as foam packaging, foam cups, cellophane
wrappers, and similar items.
 Do not remove replacement or upgrade FRUs from their antistatic packaging until you are ready to
install them.
 Gather the ESD kit and all other materials you will need before you service a component. Once
servicing begins, you should avoid moving away from the work site; otherwise, you may build up an
electrostatic charge.
 Use the ESD kit when handling any FRU.
If an emergency arises and the ESD kit is not available, follow the procedures in the section
Emergency procedures (without an ESD kit).
 Use the ESD wristband that is supplied with your system.
To use it, attach the clip of the ESD wristband (strap) to any bare (unpainted) metal on the cabinet
enclosure; then secure the wristband around your wrist with the metal button against your skin.

Emergency procedures (without an ESD kit)

In an emergency, when an ESD kit is not available, use the following procedures to reduce the possibility
of an electrostatic discharge by ensuring that your body and the subassembly are at the same
electrostatic potential.

IMPORTANT: These procedures are not a substitute for the use of an ESD kit. You should follow them
only in the event of an emergency.

 Before touching any FRU, touch a bare (unpainted) metal surface of the enclosure.
 Before removing any FRU from its antistatic bag, place one hand firmly on a bare metal surface of the
enclosure, and at the same time, pick up the FRU while it is still sealed in the antistatic bag. Once you
have done this, do not move around the room or contact other furnishings, personnel, or surfaces
until you have installed the FRU.
 When you remove a FRU from the antistatic bag, avoid touching any electronic components and
circuits on it.

EMC Confidential Information version: 4.8.6.1

 If you must move around the room or touch other surfaces before installing a FRU, first place the
FRU back in the antistatic bag. When you are ready again to install the FRU, repeat these
procedures.

Removing, installing, or storing FRUs

Use the following precautions when you remove, handle, or store FRUs:
 Do not remove a FRU from the cabinet until you have the replacement available.
 Handle a FRU only when wearing a properly attached ESD wristband:
Attach the clip of the ESD wristband to the ESD bracket or to a bare metal portion of the FRU’s
enclosure.
Secure the wristband around your wrist with the metal button against your skin.
 Handle a FRU gently. A sudden jar, drop, or violent vibration can permanently damage some FRUs.
 The weight of some FRUs is not evenly distributed. To prevent personal injury or equipment damage
when removing, installing, or handling theses FRUs, use both hands and provide extra support at the
heavy end of the FRU.
 Never use excessive force to remove or install a FRU.
 Store a FRU in the antistatic bag and the specially designed shipping container in which you received
it. Use this special shipping container when you need to return the FRU.
 If you need to store a FRU for a short time, make sure the temperature of the location where you
store the FRU is within the limits specified by the FRU’s Technical Specifications.
 Disk modules are sensitive to the extreme temperatures sometimes encountered during shipping. We
recommend that you leave a new disk module in its shipping container and allow it to acclimate to the
installation site’s ambient temperature for at least four hours before operating the new module in the
system.
 When removing a disk module, pull the module part way out of the slot; then wait 30 seconds for the
drive to spin down before removing it.
 When installing multiple disks in a powered-up system, wait at least 6 seconds before sliding the
second and each subsequent disk into the system.
 Place a disk module on a soft, antistatic surface, such as an industry-standard antistatic foam pad or
the container used to ship the module. Never place a disk module directly on a hard surface.

Node Replacement Guide

About this guide

This guide provides instructions on how to replace a failed node. If a node is
unresponsive and cannot be repaired by replacing individual components, a
replacement node is required.

Note

To confirm that the BMC LAN port is closed, run the disable BMC lan.py script on the
replaced node at the end of the replacement procedure. The script is available at,
ftp://ftp.emc.com/outgoing/Firmware_Releases/DisableBMC.

This guide includes the procedures for:

l Shutting down the failed node.
l Transferring the power supply, cache SSDs, DIMMs, the M2 vault card, and the
Network Interface cards from the failed node to the replacement chassis. The
replacement chassis arrives with an HBA riser card, with an attached battery
assembly, already installed.
l Installing the replacement node.
l Confirming that the BMC port is closed.
l Verifying the successful installation of the new node.

Replacing a node
You can replace a failed node by transferring removable components into a
replacement node. This procedure allows you to avoid smartfailing the node, while
maintaining data integrity.
Contact Isilon Technical Support to obtain a replacement node compute module
before beginning this procedure.
This procedure requires a work area large enough to place two node compute modules
side by side.

Working with clusters in SmartLock compliance mode

Clusters running in SmartLock compliance mode require a sudo prefix to run root
commands.
If a cluster is running in SmartLock compliance mode, root access is disabled on the
cluster. Because of this, you can run some commands only through the sudo program.
Prefixing a command with sudo enables you to run commands that require root
access. For example, if you do not have root access, the following command fails:

isi drivefirmware status

However, if you are on the sudoers list, the following command succeeds:

sudo isi drivefirmware status

Compliance mode commands that require changes beyond the sudo prefix are noted
in the procedure steps.

2 Generation 6 Node Replacement Guide

For more information on the sudo program and compliance mode commands, see the
OneFS CLI Administration Guide.

Gather logs
Before you begin any maintenance on a cluster, gather cluster logs.
You must collect cluster logs before all maintenance procedures. Cluster logs provide
snapshots of the cluster, which you can review to make sure that maintenance is
successful.
Procedure
1. Open a secure shell (SSH) connection to any node in the cluster and log in.
2. Gather cluster logs by running the following command:
isi_gather_info

Replace the failed node

Perform the following tasks in the order presented to replace the failed node.

Unpack the replacement node

Upon arrival from EMC Isilon, replacement nodes must be unpacked.

Procedure
1. Remove the replacement node from the shipping package and inspect it for any
sign of damage. Notify EMC Isilon Technical Support if the node appears
damaged in any way. Do not install a damaged node.
Do not discard the shipping container and packaging. You will use the container
and packaging to return the failed node to Isilon.

Disconnect the cables from the failed node

Remove all the power and network cables from the back of the failed node.
Before you begin

WARNING

Before you disconnect any cables from a node, you must make sure that the
node's journal is not active. There is a white Do Not Remove LED on the right side
of the node back panel, below the symbol of a hand with a slash through it. If that
LED is lit, the node's journal is still active and you must not disconnect any
cables. Do not disconnect any cables until the Do Not Remove LED is off.

Procedure
1. Label the network and power cables connected to the back of the node to
ensure that they are reconnected correctly to the replacement node.
2. Disconnect all cables from the back of the node.

Gather logs 3

Node Replacement Guide

Note

If there are transceivers connected to the end of your network cables, make
sure to remove them with the cables. If you are using fiber ethernet cables, you
will need to disconnect the cable from the transceiver, then remove the
transceiver from the node.

Remove the failed node

You may see LEDs on inside the failed node, even after you have removed all cables.
That is because the node next to it is supplying redundant power. Make sure that the
Do Not Remove LED is not lit on the node you are removing. If that LED is off, the
node is safe to remove.
Procedure
1. From the back of the chassis, loosen the orange thumbscrew that secures the
node release lever in place.

2. Pull the orange handle on the release lever away from the node.

The node will eject from the node bay.

4 Generation 6 Node Replacement Guide

3. Slowly pull the node out of the bay.

WARNING

Use two hands to remove the node, one at the front and one at the back, to
support the weight of the node as it clears the node bay.

4. Place the failed node on an ESD protected work surface next to the
replacement node.

Open the failed and replacement nodes

In order to transfer components from the failed node to the replacement node, you
must open both nodes.
With the failed and replacement nodes next to one another, perform the following
steps on both nodes.
Procedure
1. Place the node on an ESD protected work surface with the fans facing you.
The blue release handle should be under the fans.
2. Place the heel of your hand on the gray connectors above the fans and grab the
blue release handle with the fingertips of your other hand.
Make sure you are not pressing down on the top of the node with the heel of
your hand as that will keep the node lid from popping up when you pull the
release handle.

Open the failed and replacement nodes 5

Node Replacement Guide

3. Pull on the blue release handle to lift the lid up from the node.
You will feel an initial pop as the blue release handle pulls away from the node.
Pull on the release handle until you feel a second pop and the lid raises up off
the node.
4. Lift the lid straight up off the node and place it next to the body of the node on
your work space.
5. Repeat the above steps so that both the failed and replacement nodes are open.

Remove the fans from the failed and replacement nodes

To improve access to the contents of the nodes, remove the fans by sliding them out
of the back of both nodes.
Perform the following steps on both the failed and replacement nodes.
Procedure
1. Move the node on your work surface so that the fans are facing you.
2. Inside the left side of the node body, just behind the fans, locate the blue touch
point label.
3. Place the thumb of your left hand on the blue touch point and press the side of
the node away from the fans.

you do not feel the lid pull down onto the node, pull the release handle back out
and make sure that the lid is properly aligned with the node body.
4. After you feel the release handle pulling the lid down onto the node, brace one
hand against the back of the node and push the blue release handle all the way
in to secure the lid to the node body.
5. Repeat the above steps to close both the failed and replacement nodes.

Install the replacement node.

Install the replacement node in the same bay that you removed the failed node from.
Procedure
1. Pull the release lever away from the node.
Keep the lever in the open position until the node is pushed all the way in to the
node bay.
2. Slide the node into the node bay.

Note

Support the compute node with both hands until it is fully inserted in the drive
bay.

3. Push the release lever in against the node back panel.

You can feel the lever pull the node into place in the bay. If you do not feel the
lever pull the node into the bay, pull the lever back into the open position, make
sure that the node is pushed all the way into the node bay, then push the lever
in against the node again.
4. Tighten the thumbscrew on the release lever to secure the lever in place.

Connect the cables to the node

You must connect all the power and network cables to the back of the node.
Procedure
1. Locate the labels on the network cables and connect them to the correct ports
on the back of the node.
2. Locate the power cable and connect it to the back of the node.
Lift the metal bale over the power cable to secure the connector in place.
The node will automatically power up when you connect the power cable.

Complete the replacement procedure

Complete the replacement procedure by verifying the replacement node, gathering
information about the cluster, and returning the failed node to Isilon.

Verify the replacement node is operating correctly

One of the final steps when replacing a failed node is to ensure that the replacement
node is operating correctly.
Procedure
1. Run the following command:
mount
Confirm that /ifs is mounted. The command should return a line similar to:
OneFS on /ifs (efs, NFS exported, local, noatime, noexec)

2. Run the following command:

isi alerts
Confirm that there are no unexpected alerts.

3. Run the following command:

isi status
to confirm that the node status shows as good.

Transfer the serial number tag

The serial number tag on the back of the failed node must be removed and installed on
the replacement node.
Procedure
1. Cut the zip tie to remove the serial number tag from the back of the failed node.
If the node does not have a serial number tag attached to the back panel, locate
the blank serial number tag and pen that are included in the replacement node
packaging and write the node serial number on the tag.
Make sure that the serial number is accurate and easily read.
You can determine the node serial number by running the following command on
the replacement node:

isi_hw_status -i
Write the SerNo value on the blank tag.

2. Locate the new zip tie that is included in the replacement node packaging.
3. Attach the serial number tag to the back of the replacement node with the new
zip tie.

Update node firmware

We recommend that you update the firmware on replacement nodes.
The latest node firmware package and release notes are available for download from
EMC online support.
Follow the instructions in the release notes to update firmware on the replacement
node only.

CAUTION

Node firmware updates require a node reboot. To reduce cluster down time, do
not update node firmware on the entire cluster. Only update firmware on the
replacement node.

Gather information about the cluster

Information gathered from a cluster can help Isilon Technical Support diagnose cluster
issues.
Procedure
1. Run the following command:
isi_gather_info
to gather information about the cluster. The node returns a series of messages,
similar to the following example output:

This may take several minutes. Please do not interrupt the

script.

Information gathering completed... creating compressed package.

Packaging complete...
Package: /ifs/data/Isilon_Support/pkg/IsilonLogs-
qatango-20090901-101754.tgz
Uploading to Isilon. If problems are encountered during the
upload process, the package will need to be sent manually.
Trying Passive FTP...
Package uploaded successfully.
Cleaning up temporary data... done.

2. Send the information to Isilon Technical Support.

Confirm that the BMC port is closed

The BMC LAN port might remain open after replacing the compute node.
To confirm that the BMC port is closed, complete the following procedure:
Procedure
1. Download the script from ftp://ftp.emc.com/outgoing/Firmware_Releases/
DisableBMC to the new compute node by running the following command:

Update node firmware 27

scp <username>@ftp.emc.com:/outgoing/Firmware_Releases/
DisableBMC/disable_bmc_lan.py /root

If you are unable to access the script on the FTP site from the cluster:
a. Browse to the FTP site.
b. Right-click the File icon and select Save as... to save the DisableBMC script
to a memory stick.
c. Use the memory stick to manually copy the script to the replaced node.

2. To run the script, type the following command:

python disable_bmc_lan.py

3. Contact Dell EMC Technical Support if output similar to the following is not
displayed:
BMC LAN was successfully disabled!
BMC LAN was already disabled!
4. Delete the script from the node.

Return the failed node to Isilon

After replacing a failed node, return the failed node to Isilon Technical Support for
analysis.
Procedure
1. Contact Isilon Technical Support to notify them that you will be returning a
failed node.
2. Package the failed node for return shipment using the box and packaging
materials provided with the replacement node.
3. Attach the return label, provided with the replacement node, to the package.
4. Complete the return shipping label as directed by Isilon Technical Support. Use
the support case number provided by Isilon Technical Support as the RMA
number.
5. Ship the failed node to the address specified on the return label.
