Reading Proper

Names of students will be picked

randomly and read a stanza one after the
other.

Meaning of the poem

Stanza I : coming of winter

The persona talks of the sadness that

comes and prevails as autumn arrives.
In this stanza, he already starts to cite
examples of what events or happenings
will take place.

What are the happenings that the

persona mentioned?

Stanza II: what the season of autumn

will do to him

In his lines, we can see how full the

persona is with negativities.
What are the words that he used?
The persona finds autumn a doomed
period. Imagine wrath, hate, horror,
shivering, hard and forced labour will
possess his being. It shows the poet’s
verdict of strong dislike to the season
autumn.

He already started using figures of

speech like simile and metaphor. In lines
7 and 8, his heart is compared to what?

Stanza III: poet’ s experience

He continues to paint pictures in our

mind of what is to take place. He is
affected by the season.

To what did the persona resembles

his spirit?

He made another comparison by

comparing his spirit to a tower which was
being destroyed by a battering ram.

Stanza IV: coffin

In this stanza, we can see the

persona’s fear of the coming autumn. It’s
not actually the season that he feared but
death.

What does he mean in this lines,

“They’re nailing a coffin in great haste?”

Stanza V: summer

The poet is describing what it felts

when it was summer comparing to winter.

What are the descriptions he used

to describe summer?
Stanza VI: love of a mother

The persona reiterated the role of a

mother to her son. To love tenderly and
be a mother at all times.

Stanza VII: death

In his lines, he has drawn the picture

in the reader’s mind that autumn is
completely saddening, deadly and
mournful.

Autumn then is the symbolism of

death. All throughout the poem,
negativities is looming but if we extract it
in a positive way, it could be one of the
reasons to gain nature’s enjoyment.
IV. Assessment
In a ½ sheet crosswise, answer the question.
1. After our discussion of the poem, how would you relate the meaning of the poem
to what is happening to the Earth nowadays.
