All excavation, earthwork and filling will be carried out in accordance with
the specification and local regulations detailed in the project contract
documentation. In any circumstances where specifications are not
provided or they are in any way incomplete, the matter shall be referred
back to consultant for additional information.
The Contractor shall perform all necessary investigations about the site
conditions such as site survey works, trial pits etc. The Contractor has
already checked the geological conditions on the site and he accepted
geological report which was given in the tendering stage. All relevant
designs shall be made accordingly.
About the geological report, the Contractor has already make agreed with
the existing report which was given in

All the items below shall be considered into designs for the temporary
excavations (support system):
Before any planned trenching is executed, test pits will be excavated along the
pipe route to establish the existence of any essential services which require
protection or care during construction according to the specifications ,local
regulation and drawings.

Once excavation activities start a soil sample will be taken and send to approved
laboratory for grading and testing as required in the contract.
Top soil in areas as instructed will be stored for rehabilitation purposes after
works have been completed. Where such a requirement exists, 150 mm of top
soil will be stockpiled along the trench route.
Excavated materials will be stored next to the trench and where possible at least
1m (if possible) away from the edge of the excavations.
Safety line will be installed alongside the trench as waring to persons or animals
during not working hours.
For excavations deeper than 1.5 meters the operator will be instructed to V-
Shape the rest of the excavation, to avoid trench to collapse and should it be
noted that the soil conditions are not of suitable materials and appear unsafe. In
Deeper than 1.5 excavations hard hats must apply with standard PPE.
Ladders will be placed in excavations every six meters for easy exit, further to
this access ramps will be created every 50m – 100m as escape routes should
animal become trapped during non-working hours.
If soil conditions are bad and cracks appear shoring must be done with proper
timber planks / shutter board and steel jacks, where it is found that V-Shaping or
Stepping can’t not be applied.
No trench excavation for laying of pipes with a diameter more than 300 mm,
shall be taken out until the line of the trench has been set out and has been
checked by the Engineer.
Open Length of Trenches shall not be more than 100 mt or more than the
distance between two manholes. Every trench shall be closed after the checking
and approval of the engineer.

Short and long term stability of embankment and cutting slopes shall be done
accordance with the figure below (accordance with BS 6031);

The Contractor shall do all designs for the slopes accordance with the BS 6031
with relevant calculations. The design methods which could be used for the
slopes are shown in the below but not limited to:
Limit-equilibrium methods
numerical methods
physical modelling
prescriptive measures
Observational method
Stability charts
infinite slope method.
For the factors of safety and partial factors, all calculations shall be made
accordance with the BS 6031.
Design of the earthworks drainage shall be done accordance with the figure
below to capture the significant flows
In this respect, the Contractor will use the open sump pumping method for
dewatering excavations. That method is the most common method of
dewatering as gravity is the main playing force. Sump will be created in the
excavated area into which the surrounding water converges and
accumulates facilitating easy discharge of water through robust solid
handling pumps.

Since the bottom of the sump is situated at a level lower than that of the
excavation bottom, it will abridge the seepage way along which groundwater
from outside seeps into the excavation zone and as a result, the exit gradient of
the sump bottom will be larger than that on the excavation surface.
According to the size of the excavated area, several sumps may be placed along
the longer side or simply use a long narrow sump which is called a ditch.
This dewatering method shall be continuously carried out until the foundations
are poured and insulation works completed for structural works.
GÖKŞİN will take every precaution to prevent slips and falls of earth and
other material in the excavations. In the event of slips or falls occurring or in
the event of excavation being made in excess of the minimum necessary or
practicable for the construction of the Works the voids so formed shall be
filled.
In case of loose ground during the trench excavation, the Contractor will
take all the precautions. Accordingly, he will keep available for using the
plywood materials, timbers, telescopic prop and other required tools and
support materials on the site. Therefore, necessity supporting to prevent the

Furthermore, the Contractor decide if the material is suitable for the foundation
and embankment fillings accordance with the table “Table 7. Typical
characteristics of foundation and embankment fill materials – BS 6031”.
b. Local soils excavated on the site shall be used for filling works, when
fulfilling the criteria for non-settling fill.
c. Common Filling
i. Rock materials excavated from the site shall be used for fillings
and/or construction of dikes until the final base level for the
geological barrier. Rock materials shall be crushed and
compacted reaching the specifications below for non-settling fill.
ii. The Contractor shall perform initial laboratory testing of the
clayey soils excavated from the site from representative trial-pits
given by the Contracting Authority, determining the maximum
dry density and the corresponding optimum water content.
Based on the results of the laboratory testing the Contractor
shall determine the optimum layer thickness of materials for
compaction.

GÖKŞİN will start backfill only after the walls, floors and slabs have
been completed and have attained their full strength.
All bedding/surround and backfill materials shall be free from cinders, ashes,
refuse, vegetable or organic material, and shall not contain friable material, clay,
dust, vegetable loam or other deleterious matter which, in the opinion of the
Engineer, is unsuitable.
GÖKŞİN will provide all facilities and equipment for excavation and backfilling
materials, for crushing, screening, and processing the material if required, for

For general backfill and for granular bedding and surround to pipes in trenches;
approved granular material with maximum size 25 mm and be retained on a 5
mm sieve.
For pipes of 300 mm diameter and less, the material shall pass through a 12 mm
sieve but be retained on a 5 mm sieve.
Selected fill shall approved material selected from excavated material on the
site. Selected material shall be uniform and free from clay lumps retained on a
75 mm sieve, from stones retained on a 25 mm sieve and from all vegetable
matter, building rubbish and metals.
To be used for bedding and surrounding unprotected concrete pipes shall not
contain more than 0.3 % sulphate expressed as Sulphur trioxide.
If the excavated materials are not suitable for backfill, granular bedding and
material surround to the pipes, another material shall be imported to the site in
accordance with Employer’s Requirements and local regulations upon approval
of the Engineer.
GÖKŞİN will carefully deposit granular bedding and surround material by hand
uniformly on each side of the pipe and tamped in place in layers not exceeding
150mm, in the locations and to the details shown on the Drawings and specified,
to give the pipe support all to the satisfaction of the Engineer. Moreover, the
bedding and surround will be compacted in layers to a dry density not less than
95% of the optimum dry density according to the Modified AASHTO Test or the
BS 1377:1990 (Test 13) up to a depth of 300mm above the crown of the pipe.
