Once excavation activities start a soil sample will be taken and send to approved
laboratory for grading and testing as required in the contract.

Top soil in areas as instructed will be stored for rehabilitation purposes after
works have been completed. Where such a requirement exists, 150 mm of top
soil will be stockpiled along the trench route.

Excavated materials will be stored next to the trench and where possible at least
1m (if possible) away from the edge of the excavations.

Safety line will be installed alongside the trench as waring to persons or animals
during not working hours.

Daily excavation checklist must be conducted by appointed competent inspector

and safety representative on site before work commence.

For excavations deeper than 1.5 meters the operator will be instructed to V-
Shape the rest of the excavation, to avoid trench to collapse and should it be
noted that the soil conditions are not of suitable materials and appear unsafe. In
Deeper than 1.5 excavations hard hats must apply with standard PPE.
Ladders will be placed in excavations every six meters for easy exit, further to
this access ramps will be created every 50m – 100m as escape routes should
animal become trapped during non-working hours.
If soil conditions are bad and cracks appear shoring must be done with proper
timber planks / shutter board and steel jacks, where it is found that V-Shaping or
Stepping can’t not be applied.

No trench excavation for laying of pipes with a diameter more than 300 mm,
shall be taken out until the line of the trench has been set out and has been
checked by the Engineer.
Open Length of Trenches shall not be more than 100 mt or more than the

The Contractor shall do all designs for the slopes accordance with the BS 6031
with relevant calculations. The design methods which could be used for the
slopes are shown in the below but not limited to:

 Limit-equilibrium methods
 numerical methods
 physical modelling
 prescriptive measures
 Observational method
 Stability charts
 infinite slope method.

For the factors of safety and partial factors, all calculations shall be made
accordance with the BS 6031.

Design of the earthworks drainage shall be done accordance with the figure
below to capture the significant flows

h. Dewatering (if necessary)

GÖKŞİN will be responsible for providing and keeping in operation on each

section of the work, when necessary, pumps of sufficient capacity to keep
the bottom of the excavation or trench dry and free from water at all times or
other means of dewatering satisfactory to the Engineer until the pipe or
structure has been installed and inspected.

In this respect, the Contractor will use the open sump pumping method for
dewatering excavations. That method is the most common method of
dewatering as gravity is the main playing force. Sump will be created in the
excavated area into which the surrounding water converges and
accumulates facilitating easy discharge of water through robust solid
handling pumps.

GOKSIN CONSTRUCTION

METHOD STATEMENT
CONSTRUCTION OF SANITARY LANDFILL WITH AUXILIARY FACILITIES M.S.No: AJSW-MS-002-00
IN TSETSKHLAURI

Since the bottom of the sump is situated at a level lower than that of the
excavation bottom, it will abridge the seepage way along which groundwater
from outside seeps into the excavation zone and as a result, the exit gradient of
the sump bottom will be larger than that on the excavation surface.

According to the size of the excavated area, several sumps may be placed along
the longer side or simply use a long narrow sump which is called a ditch.

This dewatering method shall be continuously carried out until the foundations
are poured and insulation works completed for structural works.

i. Flips, and Falls

GÖKŞİN will take every precaution to prevent slips and falls of earth and
other material in the excavations. In the event of slips or falls occurring or in
the event of excavation being made in excess of the minimum necessary or
practicable for the construction of the Works the voids so formed shall be
filled.

In case of loose ground during the trench excavation, the Contractor will
take all the precautions. Accordingly, he will keep available for using the
plywood materials, timbers, telescopic prop and other required tools and
support materials on the site. Therefore, necessity supporting to prevent the

and embankment fillings accordance with the table “Table 7. Typical
characteristics of foundation and embankment fill materials – BS 6031”.

b. Local soils excavated on the site shall be used for filling works, when
fulfilling the criteria for non-settling fill.

Just after GÖKŞİN prove convenience of excavated material, he will re-

use this material. The approved materials shall be placed in layers, not
exceeding 200 mm in depth before compaction (not exceeding 150mm
after compaction) and shall be well compacted as specified in the
following:

Where necessary, the moisture content of the backfill shall to be

adjusted to an optimum either by drying out or by adding water. After
such treatment the backfill shall be thoroughly mixed until the moisture
content is uniform.

c. Common Filling
i. Rock materials excavated from the site shall be used for fillings
and/or construction of dikes until the final base level for the
geological barrier. Rock materials shall be crushed and
compacted reaching the specifications below for non-settling fill.
ii. The Contractor shall perform initial laboratory testing of the
clayey soils excavated from the site from representative trial-pits
given by the Contracting Authority, determining the maximum
dry density and the corresponding optimum water content.
Based on the results of the laboratory testing the Contractor
shall determine the optimum layer thickness of materials for
compaction.

Before filling works are commenced the Contractor shall

present to the Contracting Authority for his approval the chosen
methods for compaction of the clayey soils, stating the results
of laboratory testing, the choice of compaction method and
compaction plant to be used.

iii. Filling in sub-soil for construction purposes (elevation of the lot

bottom or construction of dikes) shall be performed by building
in layers of maximum 0.20 m thickness.

At all surface’s compaction shall be concluded using a smooth

vibratory roller or equivalent plant, which ensures a smooth
surface of the clay base.

GÖKŞİN will start backfill only after the walls, floors and slabs have
been completed and have attained their full strength.

The layers of backfill material shall be placed in such a manner as to

maintain adequate drainage and to prevent accumulation of water. The
material shall be placed with particular care for insulation and watertight
paints and all other protective or conserving surfaces and as to exert a
uniform pressure around the walls of a structure and each layer shall
be placed with a fall to prevent the accumulation of water.

GÖKŞİN will be paid special attention to the compaction of material laid

immediately adjacent to concrete walls as to ensure that the material is
well compacted. Hand operated vibrating plate compactors, vibro-
tampers or power rammers shall be used. The compacting shall be
carried out in such a way as to avoid in any case direct contact of the
compacting machinery and the building.

e. Backfilling for Bedding/Surround and Backfill for Pipe Trenches

Excavated materials are stockpiled next to trench. The suitable stockpiled

materials to be used for backfilling will be sifted through 25 mm sifts. Care shall
be taken to remove all stones with a nominal size bigger that 25 mm including
boulders and vegetation or any other deleterious materials. Sifted materials will
be used to backfill trench and compacted in layers of 200 mm. Topsoil will be
spread over backfilled area.

All bedding/surround and backfill materials shall be free from cinders, ashes,
refuse, vegetable or organic material, and shall not contain friable material, clay,
dust, vegetable loam or other deleterious matter which, in the opinion of the
