Lesson Idea Name: Show What You Know – Periodic Trends Videos
Content Area: Science-Chemistry

Grade Level(s): High School

Content Standard Addressed:

SC1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the use of the modern atomic theory and periodic
law to explain the characteristics of atoms and elements.
f. Use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of
electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms (i.e. including atomic radii, ionization energy, and
electronegativity).

Technology Standard Addressed:
Creative Communicator

Selected Technology Tool: Microsoft PowerPoint

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):
☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☒ Level 4: Integration

☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
This lesson gives students an opportunity to showcase what they have learned in a different way. It also
engages them in the content covered in a more meaningful way. The final products that the students produce
will benefit a wide range of students in the class. Those who were struggling to understand concepts will be
able to learn from their peers, those who are English Learners will be able to follow along with video content
by hearing someone read the text that appears on the video. The video format of this presentation also
allows students to access it without requiring them to have any special software.

Lesson idea implementation:
Following class instruction on the development and classification of the periodic table,
students will be given an opportunity to further explore one of the trends. As a demonstration
of comprehension, students will create movies that highlight key aspects of periodic trends.
We will take time in class to review the aspects of each trend, and then they will form groups
of two and choose which trend they would like to explain. Students will be required to use
PowerPoint to create videos in which they explain their chosen trend to their classmates. We
will take time in class to explore the features of the PowerPoint software available in the
Microsoft One. This will allow students to work on this project at home while still being able
to collaborate with their group mate. Once their videos are done, students will have to post
the video and PowerPoint presentation to the class blog and create two quiz questions
based on the material. I will also provide an example video for additional reference.

This lesson requires students to move from simply remember and understanding the

material to analyzing and evaluating their current knowledge in order to create a video that is
both accurate and informative. Students then engage in the full range of Bloom’s Taxonomy.
In addition to engaging in the highest levels of thinking, the students will also engage with
this productivity tool to create a product that is shared with their classmates, thus fully
integrating technology into their learning experience.

Reflective Practice:
As a final project for this class, I could have the students create a Youtube “how to” channel for their class
section, thus taking the LoTi level for this lesson, to LoTi 5. For each major topic that we cover throughout the
semester, they would have to come up with instructional videos like the ones created in the lesson above. At
the end of the semester, each student would be able to choose one of the topics we have covered in the
class. The students would then be required to work together to create a comprehensive outline that could
take a layperson through their course material in a way that makes sense. They would be able to use the
Microsoft Office 365 Word program to create and edit their outline collaboratively online. They would also be
able to use Office 365 PowerPoint and the PowerPoint program on their school computers to create the
instructional videos. By requiring the students to explain these concepts to others, they have to analyze what
they have learned, evaluate the information to determine what is most important to share, and then present
it in such a way as to keep their audience’s attention without overloading them with information. All these
skills move this lesson from a LoTi 4 to a LoTi 5 because they end up creating products that can be used by the
world at large.
