ABSTRACT
Over the years, business enterprises are integral in tracing the historical
developments of a specific environment.Commercial areas facilitates public
interaction, accordingly, it is where multitudes of social functions are
performed. In examining historical development, one does not diminish the role
of commercial avenues and/or streets since it can be a site where critical
assessment can be done in examining the growth and development of cities.
This study establishes how the Tomas Cabili Avenue of Iligan City, as a
commercial area, he old commercial establishments in Tomas Cabili Avenue
had taken major a roles in the industrialization and the historical development
of the city.

Al Toro Hotel and Al Macen Hardware, are among the old commercial
establishments in Tomas Cabili Avenue which left enduring legacies to the
city’s development despite its proximity to some renowned local commercial
streets such as Washington Street (former Aguinaldo) and Commercial Street
(Quezon Street). Furthermore, the location presence of the port of Iligan as
being close to the avenue area highly contributed to the opening and prosperity
of these commercial establishments starting from the years 1950 up until today.
The goal of this paper is to retrace the “prominence” of Tomas Cabili Avenue
in the historical development of Iligan City through the lenses of the old
commercial establishment that once stood in the area. These establishments
have most likely disappeared in the memory of some Iliganons and may not be
known by the new generations. Thus, in an attempt to answer the needs of the
paper, the following questions are asked: reflect Iligan City’s historical
development by looking through these old commercial establishments,
specifically by answering the following questions: 1.) What is the hHistorical
bBackground of Tomas Cabili Avenue? 2.) What are the commercial
establishments found in Tomas Cabili Avenue from 1950-2000? 3.) What are
the reasons for these commercial establishments to particularly emerge in
Tomas Cabili Avenuethe area? 4.) How did these commercial establishments
reflects the stature and prosperity of Tomas Cabili Avenue? historical
development of Iligan City? 5.) What led to the decline of the commercial
establishments in Tomas Cabili Avenue and eventually to the “fame” of the
street?

In retracing its role, taking the approach of qualitative, descriptive-

narrative method, the following surmised: first, several factors are present as to
why Tomas Cabili Avenue emerged as one of the prominent commercial streets
known in Iligan, second the commercial establishments that stood in the area
created an interdependence for the area to rise to its prominence, third the ebb
of these establishments in the area also led to the decline of its stature, thus
interdependence, and lastly, the “decline” of Tomas Cabili Avenue can be
attributed to the fiscal crisis that challenged Iligan City following the collapse
of the National Steel Corporation.

By using qualitative- descriptive narrative research methods, this paper

aims to provide the historical development of the city through the oral narratives
of the business owners namely, Diago and Almacen. The findings presented that
the emergence of these commercial establishments reflects the growth of Iligan
as a City. It is recommended in further studies to venture out more of what other
significant roles played by these establishments aside from commercial.
