Emissions

 Diesel exhaust gases contain

(legislated emissions):
 Nitrogen Oxides, NOx
 Hydro Carbons, HC
 Carbon Monoxide, CO
 Particles, PM
Of these emissions we normally talk about
NOx and PM

Why EGR and SCR?

 EGR is important to reduce NOx before the SCR

system has reached working temperature

 Important to be able to lower NOx at the source

 Good for high power levels to reduce exhaust

temperature and by that increasing the efficiency of the
SCR catalyst.

Scania U.S.A. Inc. Tier 4F

DEF
Diesel Exhaust Fluid

 Urea is the active ingredient in DEF, mixed at 32.5% concentration

 Pure urea is in the form of white crystals
 There are no known health hazards related to handling DEF
 It is corrosive to most metals such as non-alloyed steel, copper,
copper containing alloys and zinc coated steels
 DEF crystallizes above 212°F (100°C)
 DEF freeze at 12°F (-11°C)
 Average DEF consumption is 5-7% of fuel consumption

28

NOx Sensors (T115 and T131)

 The NOx sensors report the NOx levels to the EEC, the EEC uses
this reading to inject the correct amount of DEF into the exhaust.
 The sensor is electrically heated, which is controlled by the EEC.

Scania U.S.A. Inc Tier4

Exhaust Temperature Sensor (T113)

T115 T113 T131

Scania U.S.A. Inc. Tier 4F

Exhaust Temperature Sensor (T113)

When the exhaust temperature reaches 400°F (205°C) the EEC will
start injecting DEF into the exhaust.
 The catalyst has good function above 482°F (250°C)
The optimal function for the catalyst is 572°F (300°C) to 930°F (500°C)
If the exhaust temperature reaches 1020°F (550°C) the engine will
derate to avoid damages to the system.

 Pump operating speed 800-3500 rpm
Maximum pump speed is 3,600 rpm

If the pressure in the system exceeds 13 bar the relief valve in
the pump will open.

DEF pressure is regulated to 9 bar, by the pump speed.

Scania U.S.A. Inc. Tier 4F

Temperature, Level and Quality Sensor
(T4002)
 When the DEF level in the tank reaches 20% a constant
warning light will be displayed.
 When the level reaches 10% a flashing warning light will be
displayed and torque will be reduced 1% per minute down to
70% of maximum torque.
 When the level in the tank reached 0% the warning light will
flash rapidly and torque will be reduced to 0% (idle) after 2-10
minutes.
 When the level sensor reads 0% there will still be enough
DEF in the tank to cool the dosing unit.
 The engine will resume normal torque once the tank is filled
above 20%.

2. Metering nozzle

Scania U.S.A. Inc. Tier 4F

DEF doser (V182) Operation

The dosing unit opens once per second and the amount of
time that the solenoid valve is open during that second
determines the dosage quantity.
The opening time can vary from 5–95% of 1 second.
The dosing unit also monitors pressure and temperature
and reports this back to the EEC.

Scania U.S.A. Inc. Tier 4F

Coolant valve (V118)

The Coolant valve and the electrically heated hoses

are controlled by the EEC3.

Scania U.S.A. Inc. Tier 4F

Cold Start Below 12°F (-11°C)

When the DEF temperature reaches 18°F (-8°C), the DEF pump
starts to build pressure.

Once the DEF temperature is 23°F (-5°C), there is enough thawed

DEF in the tank to start dosing DEF.

When the DEF temperature reaches 50°F (10°C), the heating

system switches over to maintenance heating of the DEF in the
tank. The temperature is maintained between 32°F (0°C) and 50°F
(10°C).
