Lesson Plan Title: Fraction Families

Concept / Topic To Teach: How to identify fractions.

General Goal(s): Students will demonstrate their knowledge of telling the fraction families
apart.

Specific Objectives: Students will be able to identify fractions in halves, thirds, fourths, and
eighths using visual aids.

Required Materials: Computer access, smart board, overhead, AdaptedMind login, two precut
cookies, precut apple, scissors, and paper plates.

Anticipatory Set (Lead-In): Two big cookies for the whole class will be brought in and I will
introduce fractions by splitting the cookie into fractions of the number of students.

Step-By-Step Procedures:

1. Introduce fractions and explain what they are using two giant cookies split into a fraction
of eighths for each one of the students to get a piece.

2. Go into detail about the definitions of halves, thirds, fourths, and eighths using a Fraction
Family PowerPoint.

3. Give another example using an apple cut into fractions.

4. Assign students to go on the computers/iPads/laptops to complete five levels of the

AdaptedMind second grade math fraction levels individually for 20 minutes.

5. I will check how much each student was able to complete.

6. After 20 minutes on AdaptedMind they will get into partners. Partners will have four
paper plates and two pair of scissors. I will assign each set of partners to cut the paper
plates into fractions of halves, thirds, fourths, and eighths.

7. Collect their work and review any mistakes they made on their plate fractions.

8. Go into closure by asking students where they see fractions in the real world and what
other fraction families (5, 6, and 7) would be called.

Plan For Independent Practice: Students will use the AdaptedMind website and complete five
levels of the 2nd grade Fractions Games.

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set): Ask students where they see fractions in the real world.
Also ask if there were 5, 6, or 7 people in their fraction family what would they be called?

Assessment Based On Objectives: Students will be graded on whether their fraction plates are
correctly cut and how much of the AdaptedMind problems they can get through.

Possible Connections To Other Subjects: Students may find a similarity while counting coins
to equal a dollar.

Special needs student: has ADHD

− Must be placed in a seat closest to teacher with the least distractions possible.
− Partnered with students who are always on task.
− If needed, will work on own in a quiet spot in the classroom.
− Have classroom rules and instructions for the day’s lesson on the board at all times.
− Have assessments be a bit shorter and allow breaks as needed.
