WHY VCD?
The device alerts the driver for every 60 seconds before stopping
train. If the driver is not alert / incapacitated, VCD applies there by
Engine will come to Idle and penalty brakes will be applied and the
train stops.
One VCD alerting lamp provided on each control desk near LED
indication panel.
One VCD reset push button is provided on the control desk near
master handle.
VCD disable unit is provided in the Control Panel.
Penalty brake application Valve is provided in nose
compartment.
The MEP-660 assumes that the driver is dead / incapacitated and applies
Penalty Brakes after 94 (60+17+17) seconds and the following changes tak
place in the locomotive.
1. A message „2301 - VCD Applied Penalty Brakes‟ will be displayed on
the Display Panel.
2. VCD counter is increased by 1.
3. Buzzer is switched OFF
4. LED continue to blink for another 35sec.
5. BP is reduced to 2.8 Kg./Sq.cm
6. Loco / Formation brakes are applied
7. Engine speed is brought to IDLE.
8. GF power contactor is dropped out.
9. Power contactors are dropped out after Master handle brought to IDLE.
FOR RELEASING THE PENALTY BRAKES:
NOTE:
• Always press „VCD reset‟ switch whenever „VCD LED‟ is
blinking.
• Don‟t forget to apply loco brakes while loco is in stand
THE µP LOCOMOTIVE IS WORKING AS REAR LOCOMOTIV
IN MU OPERATION:
NOTE: Please note the reading of this „VCD Counter‟ on the display unit and
record the same in the driver‟s logbook while taking over charge of the
locomotive.
TO ISOLATE VCD
Close the cut out cock side of the „VCD magnet valve‟ if air is leaking
from the VCD magnet valve.
Warning:
After Closing VCD coc, even though VCD applies penalty Loco
brakes will not come but Engine will come to Idle.

not working /Fuel oil pressure in „ON ‟position.
cranking zero b. Ensure FPC contactor energized.
2.CK1,CK2,not picking up c. Ensure fuel pump motor is working.
3.Engine not cranking d. Ensure fuel oil pressure buildup. If not
4.Low water level Check fuel oil system.
2. a. Keep ECS in idle position.
b. Ensure start button connections and
operation.
c. Ensure CKC is picking up.

ADVANTAGES OF MICROPROCESSOR
Switches, Breakers and Operational procedures are same as
conventional locomotive for easy handling to drivers.
1. Very Low intervention by the driver during faults.
Trouble shooting activities by driver is simplified.
2. No reset of GR1, GR2 and GFOLR.
These items are not available. Reset procedure is simplified.
3. No need to maintain Timings specified in yellow zone of Load Meter.
µP automatically reduces the excitation to safe zone, if timings are exceeded.
4. No need to regulate dynamic brake @ high speeds.
µP automatically restricts the Load meter to safe zone, based on the loco speed.
5. No slackness of µP cards on run.
6. More than one traction motor can be isolated. As against single Tr. Motor in
conventional locos.
7. 2S-2P mode of operation in case of any Tr.motor isolation to provide more starting
torque. As against direct parallel mode of operation in conventional loco.
8. Automatic reduction of transition speed in case of any Tr. Motor isolation for quick
acceleration. As against no transition in conventional loco.
9. Automatic power limitation based on TMs isolated and mode of transition to safe
guard Traction motors.
10. Detailed fault indications with audio visual warnings to driver. As against 10 to 15
LED indications.
11. No confusion to driver in case of wheel slip. Only Mechanical wheel slip is
indicated as wheel slip.
12. In case of locked axle, system indicates clearly which wheel is locked. Driver has
to identify the locked axle as conventional locomotive.
13. Detailed LED indications on control unit to identify the wiring / equipment faults.
No such facility in conventional loco.
