Difference Between Shell And Core Type Transformers

1. In core type transformer winding is placed on two core limbs, whereas in case of shell type transformer winding is placed on mid arm of the core.
Other limbs will be used as mechanical support.

2 . Core type transformers have only one magnetic flux path but Shell type transformers have two magnetic flux path.

3. Core type has better cooling since more surface is exposed to atmosphere but in case of shell type transformer, cooling is not effective.

4. Core type is very useful when we need large size low voltage but shell type transformer is very useful when we need small size high voltage.

5. In core type output is less, because of losses. In shell type transformer output is high because of less loss, thus efficiency will be more in case of shell transformer.

6. In core type winding is surrounded considerable part of core whereas in shell type Core is surrounded considerable part of winding of transformer.

7. Shell type has less mechanical protection to coil but Core type has better mechanical protection to coil.

8. Core type is easy to repair and maintain but shell type is not easy to repair. We need a skilled technician to maintain it.

9. In core type transformer concentric cylindrical winding are used. In shell type transformer sandwiched winding are used.

On the construction basis transformer can be classified in two categories

Core type
Shell type

Difference between these two can be given -

1. In core type core is surrounded by the winding while in shell type winding is surrounded by the core.
1. In core type concentric cylindrical winding is used while in shell type Sandwiched winding is used.
2. Core type is made by the L or I-U shape lamination while shell type is made by E-I or E-E type lamination

1. In the core type there is one magnetic circuit while in shell type there is 2 magnetic circuit.
2. In core type leakage flux is more than shell type so that the losses. So output of shell type is more.
3. Maintenance of the core type transformer is easy then shell type transformer.
4. Core type construction is used for larger low voltage transformer while shell type is used for small high voltage transformer.
5. Natural cooling is not available for core type while for shell type natural cooling is available.

Difference between core type and shell type transformer

> Core type transforme

1. In this type transformer has both side winding of the core. Which means it has both arm winding

2. In this type transformer has only one path of the magnetic circuit or it has one path two flow of flux.

3. In this type transformer has similar core side area. Its core side is similar than shell type transformer. It is half than shell type transformer.

4. It has two arm of core or its core has two core arms.

5. In this type transformer has maximum leakage flux. It has more leakage flux or more losses in this type transformer.

6. In this type transformer give less output. In these type transformer losses is more than shell type transformer.

7. In this type transformer, transformer losses (copper losses, iron losses) are more than shell type transformer.

8. Maintenance of this type transformer is simple than shell type transformer. Its repair is also is simple.

9. In the core type of transformer, the core is surrounded by the winding.

10. Its construction: for large low voltage transformer.

11. In larger machine, we used of core type transformer.

12. It have two limbs

13. We cannot provide natural cooling for this type transformer.

14. It is used for low voltage transformer.

15. In this type transformer concentric cylindrical winding are used.

> Shell type transformer

1. In this type transformer winding installed in mid arm of the core. Simply it is installed in mid-point of the core.

2. In this type transformer has two path of the magnetic circuit or it has two flux path.

3. In this type transformer has different area of core side. Its core side area is dissimilar.

4. It has three core arms or it has three arms of core.

5. In this type transformer has minimum leakage flux. it has less leakage flux. It is better than shell type transformer.

6. In this type transformer give more output than core type transformer. In these type transformer losses is less than core type transformer.

7. In this type transformer, the transformer losses (copper losses, iron losses) are less than core type transformer.

8. Maintenance of this type transformer is complex than core type transformer. It repairing is complex than other.
9. In the shell type transformer, the winding is surrounding by core.

10. Its construction: for small high voltage transformer.

11. In small machine, we need of shell type transformer.

12. It have three limbs.

13. We can provide natural cooling for this type transformer.

14. It is used for high voltage transformer.

15. In this type transformer Sandwiched winding are used.
